HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021 Resolution No. 0331 RESOLUTION NO. 33 SERIES OF 2021 A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF RENEWING ARAPAHOE COUNTY OPEN SPACES SALES TAX WHEREAS, Arapahoe County is one of Colorado’s fastest growing counties and is projected to be the most populous county in the state by 2030, which requires a responsible approach to manage growth; WHEREAS, preserving open spaces, providing outdoor recreational opportunities, and maintaining these assets are vital to our community sense of place, protects our existing natural resources, and improves the quality of life for all residents; WHEREAS, the Arapahoe County Open Spaces Sales Tax - originally approved by voters in 2003 - has invested nearly $260 million dollars to build and maintain trails, enhance neighborhood and regional parks, and preserve natural and heritage areas; WHEREAS, more than 71% of the funding received from this dedicated tax goes directly back to the county’s 13 cities and special district partners for local open space investments; WHEREAS, over the last two decades, the County has been a good steward of taxpayer money, with oversight from an appointed citizen board that receives regular reports, recommends programmatic investments, and reviews financial audits; WHEREAS, Arapahoe County has referred a measure to the 2021 November ballot to renew the existing sales tax dedicated to open spaces to help ensure responsible growth planning and management; WHEREAS the ballot measure proposes to conserve lands that protects water quality, protect open space to limit urban sprawl, as well as maintain and improve parks and trails without raising taxes by extension of the current sales tax of ¼ of a cent on every dollar spent; WHEREAS, without the funding Englewood receives from the Arapahoe County Open Spaces Sales Tax, it would be difficult to effectively improve and maintain our local parks, recreation and open spaces investments; and WHEREAS, by renewing this existing sales tax, Englewood can ensure existing recreational and open space investments will be available for future generations. The City Council of the City of Englewood, Colorado, hereby supports the extension of the Arapahoe County Open Spaces Sales Tax, as described in the Arapahoe County Open Spaces Ballot Measure 1A during the November, 2021 General Election.
