Dear Adm inistrator at Craig Hospital.
As an own er of a property on South Clarkson Street, and two other pr opertir.s nearby, we wo uld
like to let you know that we whol e heartedly endo r se your plan to close the sectior, of South
Clarkson around Craig Hospital. We think it is a great idea . We see cars speeding qu ic kly up and
down South Clarkson Street every day and people struggle to cross the street around the
hosp ital . We think that this sort of innovative t hink ing will impr ove ne ighborhood and
• hosp ital safety and it will enhance the neighborhood as a whole .
•
A few years ago , we consulted with the City of Engl ,iwood about doing some urban landscaping
on South Clarkson Street to s low down traffic and we received endorsement to come up with
some poss ible plans . With local and national economic troubles, we put our ideas on hold , but
your proposals perhaps will energize us to initiate some planning if we can find other interested
neighbors .

Dear Mayor Penn :
We are surprised that Counc il is even considering the po tential of clo sin g South Cla rilso n
per th e request of Craig Hospital. Our hom e is located east of Broadway and north of
Cra ig Hosp~al. As we count the number of Englewood streets east of Broadway that
provide direct access across the creek , we find Lincoln, Logan , and Clarkson · three .
(And , we find that Lincoln provides only cumbersome access across the creek .) To
co nsider pennanent closure of one-th ird of these streets is unthinkable .
Is th e re some undisclo sed pl an to build a traffic tunnel under the Cra ig Hos ,··ital-desired
green space? Where do the ci ty traffic eng ineers think that traffic re-rout ed frP;-n Cla ril son
will need to tra vel?
Clearty, we think th is is an e ><tremel y poor plan , ~nd that Cra ig Hospital must be
encouraged to seek some other solution to their issue s.
Sincerely ,
Marjorie L. Becker

Dear Mr. Fordyce,
Th is is in response to your letter of August 13, 2012 in which you prov ose closing
the 3400 block South Clarkson Street.
With all du e respe ct to the quality of care provided by your m edical in stitution , it
is my firm opinion that your plan would i ntroduce considerable inconvenience
and further street congestion for the citizens of Englewood and surrounding
areas .
• For my personal address, as well as my neighbors', Clarkson is the mos direct way
to access our street, East Amherst Place , which does not extend west through to
Logan, an already heavily used arterial.
•
It would seem preferable that your needs be addressed by increasing use of the
existing crossover bridge and that If further access is needed, you consider add i ng
anot her crossover bridge or an underground tunnel rather than closing an
important automobile access route to the Swedish Medical Complex and other
nearby places of need .
It i1 my sincere hope that you will pursu e all othP.r possibilities for satisfying your
ne·,ds rather than to close the 3400 block of Sc.~th Cl a rkson Street.
Thank you for yo ur consid eratio n.
Very truly yours,
?Lo/p(2) !l/ .. 6 ,d.-.a .~)
