We lost the East Bennett plots In 1993 due to a sh ift from dryiand t o irrigated agricult ure and the last of th e West Bennett sites t o development in 2005 . We cease d research at the Kiowa locatior, In 2007 . We will present the proposed re sea rch and associated budget se pa rately for three studies (No rth Bennett, Microbial study, and Byers) and then present th" total budget for our pro posed res ea rch . IV . Bennett Study Site North Benn ett W e initiated the North Benn ett experime ntal location to rep lace the East Bennett pl ots that we :ost in 1993. Our forme r cooperati ng farmer at East Be nnett, Kevin He lter, decided to grow irrigated crops on our st udy si tes in 1993. We also changed the experimental approach ,t North Be nnett to fo cus 0 11 det erm inin g the N eq uiva lency of L/E biosoiids assoclat~d wi th repeate d applications In a dryland wheat summer-fallow agroecosystem. We will complete ha rves t soil and biomass sa mplin g and analyses; however, we plan to grow proso millet (Panicum m//iaceum L.) or su nflowers (Hellan th us annus, L.) to he lp con trol an infestation of jointed goat grass (Aegilops cyllndrico Ho st ). We have added Ba , Be , and Mn to our plant and soil analyse s si nce USEPA has identif ied t hem as potential pollutants to t h e CFR503 reg ul atio ns. Introduction Most biosolid s land -application studies focu s on risk assessme nt of potential problems associated with contamination of soils and water with heavy metals , pathogens, rersonal care products, flame retardants, etc . Other than stud ies regarding soil fertility status and crop production, studies which te st hypotheses of blo so llds as beneficial soil amendme nt s are sca rce . It is su rpr ising that few scientists have sought to quantify the envi ronmen ta l benefits of blosolids land applica tion , given that manv studie s have found litt le or no harmful effects of bioso lid s when land applied at agronomic rates. A novel laborato ry Incubation study to examine the effects of a blosoilds amendment on soil microblal-launal Interactions Is propo sed . Of th e soil fauna, the study will focus on Enchytraeldae worms becau se their members have diverse feeding strategies (bacteria , fun gi, and soil organic matter), and because they are known to affect dissol ved organ ic carbon production and reservoirs In soil. This is important because the product ion of available dissolved organic carbon Is the rate-limiting step In microb ial nitrogen mineralization- immobilization processes in a new ly devel oped soil N biogeochemlcal model. The objectives for this study are t o determine : 1) If enchytraeid worm population s in crease in response to bio solid s amendment, 2) If the worms selectively gra ze on bl os ol id s material or on bacte ria due to increased ba cterial biom ass In biosolid s-amended soil , 3) if biosolids amendment re sult s in incr eased soil dissolved or ganic ca rbon concentration s due to enhanced microbial -fau nal interactions , 4) wheth er thes e interactions ul timate ly lead to greater N mineralization rates in soi l. The hyro th esi s is tha t biosolid s amendm ent lo soil will increase enchytraeid trophi c lntenction s wit h soil ba ct eria , resul t ing In great er release of di ss olv e d or gani c car bon an d mineral N into soil. ,' B. Introduction With th e esta b lis hme nt of the L/E Byers biosolids-app lica tlon si t e, we are ~•veloping some p ractical , never-done-before re se arch . No-till and minimum tillage management is increas ing in popularity In eastern Colorado becau se It Improves wa t er con se rvation and all ows more Intensive cropping. Bloso lid s application cou ld enh ance the be nefits of no-ti ll or minimum t illage by i mproving soil cover and soil physic al cha racte ristics w1o en surface ap plied . Bioso lids co uld work in concert with crop res id ues to allow farme r s to m eet the Natural Re source Conservation Se rvice 30% soi l co verage required to comp ly w ith conservation program s. Biosolids app lication co ul d initially supply soil cover un til ad equate crop residue can accumulat e. co'ntlnued additions may eve n provide production and ec onomic advanta ges. Farmers may eve ntually use bi osolids as an integral part of a conservation progra in. Becau se of con tinui ng draughty co nditio ns, beginnin g In Fa ll 2005 , we changed our crop rotations. We • • • • • • eliminated the wheat-whe at-corn-sunflower-fa llow (WWCSF) and converted those plots to our other two rotations (wheat-fa llow, WF and wheat-corn -fallow , WCF). This Increased our replications for WF and WCF from two to four , prov iding us with a more robust statistical analysis of the effects of these two rotation s. B. Objectives our objectives at the Byer s sit e are : l . To determine If Increasing blosollds application from once every two years to two out of three years Is a feasible man age ment alternative . 2. To determine If blosollds behave like crop residues In term s of moisture storage and crop production . Available-water st orage and crop yield s are the properties of greatest Interest. To determine the effects of blosolid s application at the agronomic rate compared with commercial N fertil izer In two crop ping systems on soil and grain accumulation of plant nutrient s and trace elements limited by the Colorado Depa ,tme nt of Public Health and Environment blosolids- appllcatlon regulation s. C. Procedures Treatments: l . Two crop rotation s: a. Wheat-fallow (typic al rotati on) b. Wheat-corn-fallow 2. Bio solids/fertilizer treatments : a. Blosolid s application to supply N recomme nd ed for the mea~ured soil NO,-N (e .e., the agronomic rate). b. Commercial N fertilizer at the agronomic rate . o. EKperimentr. design We now use four block s (replications) of eac h treatment arran ged In a split -plot design . The main plots will consist of t he cro pping rotation s. Each main pl ot wlii be split to acco mm odate blo solld s appli cation on hal f the plot and co mmercial fertilizer add ition on the other ;;~:r. Ali ph ases of eac h rotation will be pr es ent each year to allow assessment of all so il and crop response~ each yea,. Th is requires a total of 20 main plots and 40 spli t plots (4 replications, 5 cropping rotations, biosolid s/fertili ze r treatment splits). Each main plot will be 0.8 km (0.5 mile s) long by 30 m (100 feet) wide. Each biosolids/fertliizer split wo uld, therefore, be 15 m (50 fe et) wide . E. Meas ure ments We will complete the following measu re,-n ,nts or analyses. 1. 2. 3. 4 . 5. 6. 7. Annual grain a,. , ,.nass yield s. Records on farmer •nputs . Plant -av ailable concentrations of NO3-N , P, ~. We wlll co mpo site 0-5-c m soil samples for As, Hg, and Se analyses for each replication before each crop planting. This will give us 14 so il sa mple s to analyze for As, Hg, and Se each year. Deep soil sampling before each crop pl anti ng by hydraulic prob e fo r NO 3-N (determined 0-30, 30-60, 60-90, 90-12 0, 120 -150, 150- 180 cm samp les, If po ss ible , from ea ch repli cated plot). For annual As, Hg , and Se grain analyses , we will composite grain sample s for eac h blo sollds or N fertilizer replication for each tyoe ol crop . Thi s sc heme will provide us with four wheat and two corn sa mpl es for As, Hg , and Se analyses each ye ar. • •• • • F. By ers study site budgets (See Table 3 on t he next pag e.) Tab le 3.
