S IGN CODE CONl'AIN ED 'l'IIEREIN.
WHEREAS , Lhe City of Engle..,,od adopted its (irst Comprehens ive Sign
Co<'e in 1974 , r egulat ing the s i gnage of the Ci ty ; and the conditions within
the City of Engl ewood relevant t o signage have changed s ubstantially s ince
that time; and
WHEREAS , the S ign Code of 1974 ha d no provisions Co r bringing into
compliance with the Code those signs ""1ich did not meet that Code 's
requirements and that has resulted in unsightly and inappropriate signage
rema ining in existence ; and
WHEREAS , the characte r of the City of Engle ..,,<.J i s as a r egional retail
shopping .:enter to people in the met rolX)litan a rea , \<.hi c h ac tiv ity se rves to
gene rate significant revenues fo r necessary Ci ty serv ices ; the City of
Englewood has made a co11111itment to rev ital ize and maintain Englewood as a
vital ret,:.il center for the area by appr ov i ng a Com pr ehensive Plan , approving
a Cb wn town Davelopment Plan , act i •·at ing the Urban Renewal Authority and has
taken steps to implement and complete these City goal s , and Sign Code
revision is a necessary adjunct to these goals ; and
WHEREAS , the correlative characte r of the City of Engle.ood is as a
family res i dential area , and it is important to control s i gnage to be
consistent with the values and goals of the important family r esidential
character of the City of Engle""°d; a nd
WHEREAS , business leade r s in th, City ,,f Engle""°d hdve expressed
suppo rt for a Sign Code r ~vis i ons to compl eme nt updat i ng a nd modernization of
the City 's cortme rcial acti viti es ; and citi l e ns of tnglewood have e xpr es:;;ed
des ires to promote , th roLKJh zon ing and signay e cont rol , a corrv:n uni ty which is
beautiful , healthy , c lean , well-balanced and safe ; and
WHEREAS , the City Planning and Zoning Colll1l i ssio ·1 has well performed its
O,arter function by proposi-ig a r evised Siqn Code to City Council after
numerous public hea ri ngs and meetings witl'l such Commis s i on , citizens , and
inte r ested party partic ipation and has submitted to the City Counc il proposed
legislative findi ng s o( fact wl1ich suppo rt the enactment of the proposed Sign
Code; and City Council adopts those pr oposed find ings of fact and makes
additional findi ngs ,~ fact ; and has considered testi,oony presented in public
hearings befo r e the Counci l.
