AN ORDINANCE AMENDING TITLE I, CHAPI'ER 5, SECTION 2, SUBSECTION 5, OF
THE ENGLEWOOD MUNICIPAL CODE, 11185, CHANGING THE ELECTION OP THE
MAYOR AND MAYOR PRO TEM FROM THE FIRST MEETING IN J ANUARY TO THE
FIRST MEETING FOLLOWING EACH GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECT!"~.
WHE.REAS, the Englewood Home Rul• Charter wa■ amended changing the date that
Council Membera take office from the lat meeting in Jam!fdy to the lat meeting following the
e1ection ; and
VIBEREAS , the City Cow,cil desires to be consistent with philosophy of prompt
implementation of citizens direction and move the Council election of the Mayor and Mayor
Pro Tern to the first meeting following the election;
NOW , THEREFORE , BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ENGLEWOOD, COLORADO , AS FOLLOWS :

is hereby amended to read as follows :
1-5-2-5: PRESIDING OFFICER :
A . The presiding officer of the City Council shall be the Mayor, who shall be
elected by the membera of th e Counci l at the first meeting in Jan-, ..fteT
FOLLOWING each general Mun icipal election .
B. The presiding officer shall preserve st,;ct order and decorum at all regular
and special meetings of the Council. iile THE MAYOR shall state every
question coming before the Council , onnounce the deci1ion of the Council on
all .-..ibjects, and decide all questions of order, subject, howev<r, to an appeal of
the Council, in which event a ~ority vote oh!,.,.. THE Councilmen present
and voting shall govern and conclusively determine such questions or order.
He THE MAYOR shall vote on a.II questions, his/HER name beine called
last. He THE MAYOR shall ■ign all ordinances adopted by the Council
during hia/HER presence.
C. At the said firat meeting in Jam.a,, af:,e, FOLLOWING each general
election, the Council shall elect a Mayor Pro Tern who shall act as Mayor
during the absence of the Mayor . In the event of the absence of the Mayor, the
Mayor Pro Tern, a s presiding officer, shall aign ordinances as then adopted.
In the event of the absence of both the Mayor and the Mayor Pro 'hm, the
presiding officer selected pursuant to the provisions of Section 1-5-2-78 of this
Chapter, shall sign ordinances u th en adopted .

Approval of an ordinance changing the commencement of the term of office from ':he first
meeting in January to th e first meeting immediately following the general municipal
election.
PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION
In 199 1 the Englew ood Home Rule Charter was amended reflecting these changes.
BACKGROUND
The Englewood Home Rule Charter was amended changing ·tpe date that Council Members
take office from the first meeting in January to the first meeting following the election. This
amendment will make the Englewood Municipal Code consistent with the Home Rule
Charter amendment.

None.
