Invocation The invocation was given by Council Member Barrentine. 3. Pleclge or Allegiance The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mayor Garrell . 4. Roll Call Presen t: Absent: A quorum was present. The evcn1 was a hu ge success with almos1 one th ousand individual compe1i1 ors and learn s tra ve ling from as far :1way as Germ any 10 gel here . Our tea m did ver1 well. Ea ch one of us set perso nal record s and our rel ay learn made it all the way 10 the champ io nship fina ls. We are here fo r 1wo reasons : (I) we nre going to give our lu cky individua l a 1as te of what this is like and (2) we wanl to thank the Cou ncil for your support. Without yo ur suppon , we would not ha ve been ab le 10 go and co mpete . Thi s is so mething 111111 we arc all dedi cated to do for the nex t several years to come . Red e said the stairs 1ha1 we did in abou t 20 seconds is taking Mr . Flahcf !Y just a liule bit lon~er. He sai d when he comes back in we arC going 10 have him drag the dumm y. which is th e lilst porti on of thi s event. In the eve nt th e dummy is 175 po und s of dead weight, and they drag that fo r 100 feet. Mr. r1aherty returned to the chambers and there was :1pp lau se. Mr. Rede sa id in :1bout 45 seco nds we will as k Mr. Flaherty how it felt . There wa s applause . Mr . Rede said we do have 3 number of paramedic s here as well . He said Mr . Flaherty, yo u ha ve done approximate ly • one.fifth of the co mpetition , if you could just kind or tell us what yo u th ought. Mr. Red e sai d the top competitors arc fini shing thi s competition in about one minute and 30 second s so that just gives you an idea ... we are ot four or fi vr-minutes ri ght now. That could have ca used all kind s of water suppl y a nd other probl ems for loca l munic ipalit ies and th ere was a lot of ques tio ns as to wheth er it co uld eve n be that way , brca use th e South Plane is su hi ghl y controlled anyway with dams und rcservoi rs ... but it could have ca used a lot of ~,oblems. A number of agencies got to geth er and fo rm ul;ued a plan and proposed an e ndowm ent th at would do a lot of th e thin gs that a 'wild and sce ni c' des ignatio n would do with out going lo th e extremes. They fi ni shed their work, the Fore st Service has acce pted it and now we arc all joining in on a pro-rata basis to form th e fund th at will do thi s work . It has been almost sea mless ... it is ,mrd to see th.II anything has eve n happe ned th ere and I appreciate that. But, I also know that th at has taken a 101_ of effort on a lot of peopl e's part , not o nl y 1he Cit y Manager's office. but the oth er employees in the Ci ty Clerk 's office. I had menti oned just one of th e thin gs that has ha ppened is th e Finance Director has taken on extra ro les and dutie::.. So, it is really appreciated when yo u see people pull together and what a ni ce family thi s is for the empl oyees. I jus1 appreciate all d e work that they do. Thank yo u. 13. City Manage r's Report (a} Cit y Ma nager Sears said wcjusl recei ved word today that Se lwyn Hewitt is being honored on Thursday, Janu ary 27'h at 5:30 p.m. at the Den ver Marri ott Tec h Ce nt er for a comm unit y vo lunteer award. A number of ve ry pre sti gious people from televi sio n news shows, to attorney firms, to the Rocky Mountain News, etc . wil l be there. I don't know if Selwyn wants to say anything abo ut that or not, bu1 I think it is a wonr:lcrful honor. Selwyn Hewiu sa id thank you Gary.
