AIA Denver intends to bring recognition to individual s from di ve rse backgrounds for their pro fe ssio nal

Simpson's leadership in rejuve nating Englewood's Broadway Busine ss Di strict , hi s leadership in
integrating an into the community. redeveloping Brownfield proJ -:c 1s. helping with affordable ho using and
the main reaso n. in my opi ni o n, at le ast, is th e redevel opment of Ci nderell a City. where we are
now ... CityCen1er Englewood. I know Mr. Simpso n wo rk ed closely with all the develope rs, the design
tt:am, th e Mayor, th e City Manager, the Cit y Counc il and everyone in vo lved . I don't think there is >1 ny wa y
that 1.hi s wo uld have turned into just a nother strip•center, not with Mr. Simpson as the Community
Development Director. He pla yed a significant role, as we all know and gave E nglewood a hean. I WfJ uld
like to list a few other peo ple who have won this award over the last several years, for you to get an id ea of
the caliber of people Mr. Simpson is assoc iated with . Mark Johnso n of CIVITAS won this award in 2002,
Micke y Zeplin won this award in 2001, Dana Crawford was presented this award in 1999 and Mayor
Federico Pena was given this award in 1997. Ms. Emerso n said we wa nted to be here tonight 10 hon or him,
congratulate him and make s ure everyone knew what 11 great guy he is. There was applause.
Mr. Hi cks said the formal award was prese n1cd at u ur awards ga la a couple o f mo nths ago and there were
300 architects in attendance. Again, it is a wonderful award for a wor 1derful guy who has do ne marvel o us
things for this great City. We apprec iate it. Congratula1ions. There was appl:!use

Opera tio ns Manage r Tall ent passed th e award to Counc il fo r them to look at. He said this is an awa rd th at
was iss ued to us th is year and it is our fo urth First Place Na ti onal Awa rd. Mr. Ta ll ent state d this award is
fo r our Bk,so li ds Program. We manage and operate dispos al of biosolids produced at the Was tewa ter Pl ant
on the fa rm th at the Cit y owns. He sa id thi s awa rd wns prese nt ed at the Na tional Conventio n in Los
Ange les in October. Mr . Tall ent sa id we arc ve ry pro ud of it.
Manager Stowe sa id thi s is ve ry simil ar to an awa rd 1hat we rece ived over ten yea rs ago. The EPA gave us
a Bi oso li ds Awa rd while th ey were suing us fo r 1he Lo"'TY Landfi ll. It too k 1hem ten ye ars to rea lize that
they rei"ll y hadn't made a mi s1akc by gi ving us the awa rd back then, th at it was rea ll y a goud 1hing 10 do.
Manage r Stowe said the re is one other awa rd I wo uld like to ment ion. it is an individual awa rd earned by
one of our staff. The Waler Enviro nm en t Fede ration has a series of award "-they give out every yea r.
Process Sp!..cia li st Greg Fa rm er, earned th e Philli p A. Morga n Award. The Mo rga n Award is for res ea rch
cond ucted al a wa ste water pl an!. that is 1hen used in a fu ll -sc ale proje ct. Mr. Farmer was working on a way
10 re move nitrate: fro 1•1 our was1cwa1c r. Tha l is an upc omin g requirement we wi ll have. Mr. Stowe said the
re searc h lead to the design of a full-scale sys1e m that wi ll be insta ll ed in the constru ct ion projec t beg inn ing
next year. He sla ted it rea ll y doesn't save anythin g in ca pit al cos ls, bu t we expect th at th e resu ll s of Mr.
Fa rme r's researc h wi ll save a considera ble amount of mone y in opcr:lling cos ts every yea r fo r 1hat system.

Broadwa y. l-l is firm was just fo ur years old , but he wa s already be ginn ing to make hi s mark in th e area .
She stated 1he buildin g was a remarkabl e exa mpl e of interna 1io nal style. a strikingl y mode rn building of
glass. steel and slune that set the to ne for th e Cit y's future . In 1962. hi s wo rk in the re gi on drew another
banking establi shment , First Federa l Savin gs, to commi ss ion a ne w bank building a1 J8 1h and Lowd! in
Denver. That same year. Fi rst Federa l Savings merged wit h the Fi rs: Fed eral Sa vings and Loan of
Englewood at 3496 So uth Broadway. Ms. Wr ay said First Federal S···::1gs was a distingui shed in stitution
founded in 1885 and according to their broc hure s, the assoc inti on se rved thro ugh 189 3. 1907 and the Grea t
Depress ion of the 1930's, ne ve r failing to meet a withdraw :i \ reque st, never los ing a penny of sa vings . To
accommodate 1he growing organization. M ..... how was co mmi ssio ned to design a se..:ond bui ld ing in
Englewood at 4301 South Broadway. The new bank was si ted approxi mate ly at the end of the Cherrelyn
Horse Car Linc, where the ca r turned and the horse, rode behind. on the trip dow n hill . De spite the hi storic
loc ati on, the bank bill ed itself as "a mode rn Savings and Loan facili ty". The tex t of the Grand Openi ng
brochure renec 1ed lhc spirit of the tim es, "It is with great pleasure that we dedicate fo r your use anothe r
First Federal Savings office . This beautiful new building by W. C. Mu chow, Architect, was designed 10
serve Eng le wood, Little to n and so uth Denver areas . The entire project is set on a land sc aped plaza and will
be an outstanding ::.ddition 10 the famo us Cherre lyn busine ss area . Through 78 exciting years, the
Assoc iatio n, now over fifty mill io n strong, is plannin g olh cr adv ances for 1962 . T. c: installation of the
Univac Darn Process ing Sy s1em will further improve the services of th e Associ:u ion." So thi s show s we
arc at a c u~p whe n we are going int o a brand new period in o ur loc al hi story . Thu s the conve rgence of the
Go ld en Age of Englewood pro speri ty, saw the constructi on of two di stingui shed bank bui ld ings by the man
who wou ld become one of the most respected and honored architects of the post-wa r period in the Roc ky
Mountain Regi on. Born in Den ver, Muchow studied at Notre Dame. the Universit y of Illin ois and perhaps
most notabl y. und er Eli e) Snnrinen at the Cranbrook Academ y.
Ms. Wray stated since the AIA was here 10 honor o ur ow n Director Simpson tonight. I will also menti on
that Muchow was a promine nt figur e in the AJA se rvi ng as a member of the AIA Jury of Fellows,
Chairman of their Natic111al Award s Commiuce, Chance ll or of the Co ll ege of Fell ows and Director of th eir
Westci n Mouniain Regional office . In the 1hree decade s betwee n 1950 and 1980 , hi s work was al so
hon ort ' by more AlA award s than can be mention ed here . Again. she said, from the opening brochure . the
bui lcr .1 g 1s de sc ribed. "t he design of the building is unique in that the roo f stru cture is ca rrie1 on four
colu mns whi ch ri se up 1hrough the lobby, exte nding verticall y through the roo f pl ane and termina1ing at
skylight pyram id s nood irg the lobby with natural da ylig ht". Exlensivc use of brick, bot h interior and
exteri or. along with th e d :s ign of rich walnut and acce nt co lorin g, cre ate s a pl eas ant environment. This
kind of enginee rin g wor ks, spec ifi call y, in combi nin g the struc1ural plan of th e building with 1he
appearance of it. la1 cr pla ye d o ut most fam ously in the rccc mly demolished Currigan Hall . al so by Will ia m
Mu chow, whi ch was internati onally recognized for its advances and sp ace fram e con structi on. But in
additi on to be ing so ve ry ad va nced in th eir o wn ope rati on s and th ro ugh their arc hitect. the bank also
proud ly featu red a coll ecti on o f photographs taken aro und 1885 by Jose ph Co llier and hi s son, 1l obert, one
of the founders of the Associat io n who were pioneer Co lorad o ph otographer s. A uniqu e fea tu re of the
bui ldin g was a co mmunit y roo m, whic h was availab le for 1hc use of cl ub s, orga ni zatio ns, ci vi c and
educati o nal group s Pirst r'ede ral made no charge fo r the use of thi s co mmunity roo m. With !he
redevelopment of the former Ci nderella City si te rea ching co mpleti on. it is na tura l that the City uf
Engle wood has begun to examine ways 10 re vi tali ze 1he South Broadwa y Corrid or in Engl ewood. But
redevelopment within n den se ly developed corridor is not as ea sy as the clearing and co ns1ructi on at the
Cindere lla City site, as the foiled Trolley Square projec t demonstrat es . That project cle ar-c ut a key bl oc k,
lea ving a visual gap and an an yw here subu rbia fe eling th111 ove rwh el ms our se nse of En gle wood as th e
hi storic small town that it is. In th e proce ss, by the wa y. it also demoli shed \Vi Ili um Muchow ·s fir st bank
bui lding in tow n. th e Fir st Nati ona l Ban~ of En gle wood, tha t archi tec tural ge m of the ea rl y pos t-war years.

dis regarded as 100 new. I ha ve see n o ther ci ties that have had th e oppo . ,ervc buildings th at
represent a significant co ntribut io n to that period. I request that the Co un1... i.:r th at thi s is part of th e
le gacy o f Engle wood and alth ough. not terribly we ll respected at th is po int in 11,rn:, in th e nex t 30 to 50
years, there wi ll be sign ifi ca nt losses o f mode m architr.cturc and thi s is our o pportunity 10 save some of
that. I understand the demand in modem commerce for efficiency anci to ac tu ally rec o nstruct thing s and
make them more o f our time . However , the adaptive reuse of buildings and therefo re the presentation of
~'iC buildings is part of the ste ward ship of a communi1 y and th e leade rs o f th e co mmu nit y. I wou ld ask
UI JI by dela ying thi s, that the Cit y look to its trea sures wheth er the y are fro m two ce nturie s ago or the last
ce ntury. because they wi ll be our future heritage . Tha 11k yo u.
(b) Mi chael Hi cks said I nm not a re si denl of Englewood anymore. I live in Denve r, but I
will speak regardin g th e pre se r"atio n o f arch itec1ure. As a mauc r of fac t, 1hi s part icular bui ldin g was
in sp ir atio nal to me when I was in high schoo l. as it was one of th e nices t exa mple s of archit ec ture . I knew
Bi ll Mu chow, I worked in hi s offi ce . Some of the bes! architects in Den ver ca me out o f Mr . Mu chow's
o ffi ce, including Peter Domini ck, George Hoove r and Gar y Des mond who are all fe ll ows in lhe Ameri ca n
Institute of Arc hit ec ts. I wou ld enco urage rhe Coun ci l 10 look al thi s buildi nr and to loo k at every piece o f
co nt emporary architecture that was done in Eng lewood, because there is a wea lth o f i i here . I g1ew up in a
ho me, that was an archir ec t 's home . th at my fath er bo ught fr o m him . Th ere were archi tcc t's offi ces on
South 8r1Jadway that we re buildin g so me of the fin est co nr cmpora ry ho uses in lhe Denver area . Thi s rea lly
is a legacy fo r Englewood and it should be eva lu ated and 1 wo uld cnco ura ge you to do so.

wi th ACE, the Chamber, Code Enforcement Advisory Co mmittee, discus sions with th.>se groups. more
re writes and finally, this year, anothe r Planning v d Zoning Co mm ission draft. The Commi ssion
considered that draft at a Public Hearing on Septe111bcr 16. 2003 at whic h only one citizen spoke. That
citizen spo ke concerning the auto use mora torium . The Commissi on reco mm ended approva l of the UDC
by a vote of 7 to 0, Cily Co unci l has reviewed th e UDC , as approved by th e Planr· :ig and Zo ning
Commission, at three se parate Study Sessions and requested the allachcd amendm cl'ts Thi s ha s ac1ual\y
bee n. as I said, thre e years, but probably m()re like six or seven yea rs of work in th e making. Under the
UDC there is no land that is to be rezo ned. There !lre no sub stantive change s 10 the land sca ping, to the

modi fi ca ti ons thro ughout the projec t a nd mos t no tab ly, it incl udes approx imat ely 500 independent test
scripts that we developed that trllk a long time to negoti ate . We fee l it is ve ry im porta nt fo r the ve nd or to
show those unique customizati ons for the system, given tile uni que nature of the way the Utilities
