sixteen years, he soid. and I hJ\'e a business here and I am raisinb a family . My so n Co lin Lewis onends
Maddox Elementary Sc hool and three yea rs ago he was diagnosed with autism. as arc about one in two
hundre d and fifty children these days . I beca me involved with the aulism community sho rtl y after his
diognosis . In about Augusl of last year. he sa id. I was asked to serve on the Board of Direc tors of 1he
Co lorado Chapter of the Autism Society of .America . Sol have served in that capacity for abo ut a year and
a ha!f. I shoved some qu arterly new sletters under the door last Monda y nigh! after your meetmg, he said.
just 10 give you an ide a of what we are about. I'm not sure if yo u got th em. Ma yo r Bradshaw said yes, we
did . :Vtr . Lewis sa id the reason he wanted to speak to Cou ncil tonight W3S because. wi 1hou1 fonfore, our
office has relocated to Englewood . So now the State oflice of the Autism Socie ty is located in Eng lewood
and I jus t thought you wo uld want to kn ow . because yo u love lhi s place jusl as I do. Having said that , he
said . I am sure yo 1• 'now what is comi ng next . Since Sep tembe r 11 th. of course. we ore 3S strilppcd for
funds as all of the 5L ltc) (3) 's are ancl : wou ldn't wan t 10 miss th e op portun11 y 10 ask fo r so me hdp. I
don ·1 reall y ha \'e any1hing else that I 11ced 10 say to you. I would love 10 answer any questions yo u might
ha ve about the Auusm Society or what it docs. he said . Ynu may not be awore , he said. that Co lorado is. I
belie\'c, 44 th in the co untry in tcm\S of providing sen'iccs for chi ldren with di sabi li ue s. autism in particular.
What we arc running into. he explained, is the TABOR Amendmen t, which limits Staie spe nding . My son
qualified for what the y call the Modd 200 Medi caid Waiver when he was six. Al !hat time the waiting list
for services was seve n yea rs . Now, a yea r :rnd :i. half later, he is still seve n yea rs back . Th is is th anks to
our friend Douglas Oru ce. whose good intentions had all kjnds of effe cts that wcren 't in tended at the time.
So, he op mcd. Colo rad o is bad . What we try 10 do is 1ake up the slack in ways that the public sector in
C'oloraJo does 1101. Dut it is rea ll y hard. We arc all voluntee rs, we are all strilpped for time and we all hilvc
chil dren with disabilities. We do what we ca n as part of the ::,rgan iza11on and 3S indi vidual s. I don't know
if thJI hdps you understand what we arc about. he said. or if the newsletters help . There is a woman from
Litt klon who ha s furi ousll been \VTlling grant s for about six months and the hope for funding prcny much
dried up on Septe mber 11 . Just recently in the p3per. on the editorial page . there was a co lumn that 1alked
about how the chari1ablc organizations are ha ving suc h a terrible time. TI1ere is only so much money to go
around . I'm not here necCS!;J ril y to plead for money, but I might as well Jo that while I am here . My main
purpose 111 bcmg hcrl' is 10 lc r you know we arc hi.:rc and if1h c rest of the co mmunit y linds oul about us, by
whate\'er means. I think II would be a ni ce pomt of pride for our Ci ty. I am proud, he said. and I hope
Counc il 1s too.

Ms . Bradshaw advi sed that we have all but three of th e torch be arers who are go ing to be can-ying the
Olym pic Torch . plus we have two torches here and Ms. Puncerelli is goi ng to help me with this .

very good friend and customer of mine found out tha1 Chevrolet Moto r Divisio n was sponsori ng th is and he
want ed 10 nominate me fo r the commun ity work that I do in Denver and !he surro unding counties . I never

tea che r in nonh Aurora . As a 1eacher, he s::iid. I always look for le sso ns to teach. but thi s has been a lesson
I.hat I have been able 10 le~.m . Because. he said. when I was sev en years old the Olympics were in Lake
Placid, the torch went right by my grandmolhe r's house . We drove 10 a co uple .1f places 10 watch it again
and n has JUSt been one of those lifelong dreams to be :ible to carry I.he torch. When I found 01.,t that I was
going 10 be able 10 do 11, he said, it was suc h a thrill . because now I can 1ell my stud ents 1he lesson 1hat I
have learned is that you always ha ve to hold onto you r dreams, bec:mse you don't know how lon g it will
take to accomplish them. He thanked Council for invit ing him here tonight. Mr . Kastens re ceived a round

Geoff Goodman said he would hke to tak e a moment 10 tell everyone about his persona l pa ss ion and th.11 is
that everyone sho uld have a person.ii exercise program. This is some thmg that is difficult for so me people,
for peopk· who have d1sabi 1itics and, in particular, poor peop le who ha\'e disabi lities . I ha ve had the
opponumty 10 work with pe<.1·!e in th:it snuation at the Denver Health ~fcdical Center, he said . I h:ive
worked 10 put together an exercise program fo r some of those folks and I have done II for five years. We
have had about -f50 people go through that program. We leach Chine se exercises and we hope that is
something that w11l stick wnh the people and helps with their lives . They have cenamly influenced my life.

get on with my lik with the help of the suppon syslem of Craig Hospita l. I try to support a lot oflocal
org:iniza tions to promote spi r,al cord injury re sea rch, fund raising. Jd\'OC'acy and awareness, he said. I am
very honored. privileged and proud to be an American . he said and 10 be panicipating in this Olympic

Annel y No bel said she would just like to say thank you. I fee l I am runnin g for everyone here . I'm here
be cause of my wonderfu l husband. she said, who :1c1ually made up a fly er and se nt II to everyone I think I
ha\'e ever me1 in my whole life and 10::,, woman I hav e known for over 20 years who nominated me from
Florida . The reason is 1ha1 I am a \'o lunt ec r wit h children . I am incredibly nervo us right now , she said, bu!
if I just think of you all ::,,s middle schoolers then . reany, it is no1 too hard . For th e last seven and a half
years we ha ve liveci here in Co lorado, she said, I have been ve ry active with middle sc hoo lers and high
sc hoolers and I have staned cofTee houses and kid 's club s to keep children active under parental guidance
or supervisio n. Because:. she said, I think cluldrcn who arc bus y and producuve will go on to be co me very
goo d citizens of the community. Addit1om11l y. in this lener, my friend brought up the foci that I ha ve
fibrom ya lgia. so exercise is very ess en11al in my life :md 11 is very beneficial. !ff don't do it th en I feel
preny bad and 1f I do do it then I feel much heller . So it 1s fo r those reasons that I am here and I ha ve to
give my hu sband even more kudos , l::cause he takes t :tter care of me than I take care of myse lf. I wou ld

Gayle Bush sai d I too would like to thank the Englewood Cit y Co un cil for ha\'mg us here . I was nominated
by my fonncr students . I am a retired Georgia schoollcacher and I taught for 30 years. I mo ve d here
bec au se my nephew lived here and he was bccommg a father and asked me. as I helped rai se him. if I
wou ld help rai se his son. So I moved here and I am still teaching, so I have started my seco nd 30 ye ars. So
I ha ve been tea ching 35 ye ars now . Ms. Bu sh re ceived a round of app lau se.
Michael Kirb y !-;ud he wan1ed 10 thank eve ryo ne fo r having us here. I was nominated by my daughter, he
s:iitl . I wa s g1ve1, a 6% chan ce 10 li\'e five and a half years ago . I have non-Hodgkin 's lymphoma, I wenl
through fifteen rounds of chemot herap y. I went throu gh twelve surge rie s and I had a bone marrow
transplant . All went we ll for three ye ars. th en th e cancer returned and I had my second bone marrow
lr3nsplanl ab out two years ago . I am only one of five people who have had that I haver.'t been sic k a da y,
he sa id . smcc my older brother was a perfecl match . I have bre !1 \·ery fortunate . They told me it would
take a year and a half to 1wo y1•:i.rs to recove r. I have been very. very fortunate as I was able 10 go back to
work w11hm a month and resume full JCt1 v111es and coac hin g my so n· s socce r and ba skelball teams . I am

Vir gmia Fe rraro said she was nomma 1ed by one of her best friend's, her old es t da u,r hter . She is actually a
gra du::,,te of one of yo ur fine: sc hoo ls m Englewood. St. Mary ·s Academy, where the y obviously taught her
to \\Tit z very dynamic essays . I'm very humbled by th is experience, she said, and very proud . I think this
was her way of thanking me, linle old mom. as the mo1her of four .:hildren I did a lot of driving with the
four kids 10 ge t them to sw im activitu:s. pri va te school. academic activines. to help them reach th ei r goal s
tha t we helped them set for th emse lves a nd to reali ze that the y ca n attain go al s. She is a graduate of Johns
Hopkms Uni ve rsit y and swam in sc hool. as did so me ofmy other clu ldren . It is a fanuly co mmitment, 3S a
lot of yo u know to help kid s re::,,ch their goa ls and the hope 1s tha1 they will then give back ro their
commu 1111 y through what yo u have been abk to teach them . So. thank yo u for thi s opponunily. she sa id .

She nommate d me because I have been a runner smc c I was in elementary sc hool and when I entered high
sc hoo l I started to ha \'c a lot of problems. I h::,,d 10 ha ve three major surge rie s on my le gs. she sa id . It was
cuhcr ha ve the sur gery or I co uld have an aneurysm and die or they would have 10 amputate both le gs . So.
after th e surgenes and after a 101 of rehab1 l11a1 io n the y rold me I probab ly wo ul dn't ever be able 10 run . But

to be outlined. For instance, Planning and Zoning is sl ightl y different than what was before the m.
Mr. Yurchick sa id my concern is that, I think. some of the boards arc being led by City sratf and the board
is not running the board. Mr. Sears said he wi ll wo rk wi1h City Attorney Brotzman and the y mi ght put
together so ml' kind of recogni1io n with Counc il a nd the boards, sometime in March or April and ha ve an
in lerfoce eve ning. a 1ent talk type of th ing and we can ta lk about that at that point in time. Mr. Yurchick
said it needs to be specific to each board. about what th eir function is.
Mayor Bradshaw noled that when she was on Council before, we met every fo ur years and mel with every
board and commission. or once every 1wo years so mc1 irne s. She said we always met with the m as a group
:it an ic e c rea m social kind of thing.
