My po sitio n, as Chi ef Development Officer, is to try and conve y the m~ed 10 communitie s. I am approaching eight co mmuni ties 1hnt access and utili ze the services oflinlcton Hos pital. speci fi call y far the issue of trauma care . What we ha ve found, in th e greater Den ve r :u cn, is that we have th e :ic utc proble m of making sure we hn vc en ough emerge ncy depanmenl beds, wai t ,g rooms :i nd access for ambulances so the y do nol h:i ve 10 go all away across town, pnnicularl y in our adverse weat her, in many se :iso ns. The real acc ess issue, she said, is if1hcrc is no1 room, they di vc n and 1l1c diversio n in !h e l:i st two years ·vas 8,000 hou rs. Now, she pointed out, !hat doesn 't so und very cri1icnl ur;less yo u happen 10 be in the iu:i bulirn ce or yo u happen to have bee n a paren1 at Col umbine or you are invo lved in :in accident on 1-25 or 225 and h:ive to be 1aken from so uth 1-2 5 all the way to Denver Health on 6th Ave nu e or :is for wes t as Lutheran Medical Ce n1 er. So what the pl anning depanment of Little ton Hospital determined was needed, was 10 increa se their trauma capacit y to Level II from Level ll1 . • Thill incurs certai n ex penses , cc nain expansion and ccnain awareness of th e commu nity in order for that to occu r. So, sht.! no1cd, we arc ri ght in the middle of that process right now . f or many months there was a bi g cra ne sining on Littleton Hospi tal, which is loc at ed on South Broad w:iy and Miner.ii. When I began to ri o th e re sea rch of th e communities it onl y see med re lev:int , tor 1e. hav in g gr0\\11 up in this co mmuni ty of Englewood. going to Engle wood Hi gh, Flood Ju nio r Hi gh. Der vc r Universi ty and being so n of a rare native of thi s a re a. th:it it wo ul d onl y be relevant to this Counc I if you co uld sec how it has affected Englewood res iden ts. So I did a searc h :ind we h:ive them all divided by zip c:ode , and , :i s of the end of Jul y, ove r 7,000 members of th e co mmun ity of Englewood h::id accessed !h e emergenc y dep 3nmcnt of Linl eton Hospi 1nl. The growt h is absolutely phenome nal. What we find in th e co mnmni1i cs like Englewood and Littl eton is that we ha\'e to have health ca re close by, panicula rl y for se nio rs and emergencies . What we are find ing is that w1 h th e growt h, th:it was unparalleled in the last dec::idc ... the growth was 500 ,000 pe op le, we look for the next de cade 1" ~ri ng 800.000 individual s to 1he so uth corrido r ofDen\'er's grea ter metro area . So tonight I wanted 10 co nvey to yo u that t~.c re is a tremendous nccri . A need that I h:ive, and 1hat I wan t to co nvey to yo u. is to ha ve the City of Eng lewood think about becoming a Cha ner donor. Ms . Ma so 11 poi n1 ed ou l that Li nk ton Hospi tal has never rai sed one dime from th e pri va 1e sec tor, th ey ha ve neve r go ne oul to the communit y. Poner, their sis ter ho spi1:il, ha s done that for ce nnin 1hings like the C:i ncer Ce nter an d ! think most of us ha ve :in ende d or go ne through these fa ciliti es through the ye :i rs. I wo rked on th e Greenway Trail Sys tem and ma ny n:itional projects . This is working very well and we arc ea rl y in to th e proccs!,:. I began my wo rk in ~l:irch of 1lus year . The goal fo r raising enough money to be co me Tra um.a II is S7 .5 mill io n and what you see in you r packet ... if yo u wi ll open 1hem briefly ... is , ll n th e lefi side, a hi story of the hos pi1al and on !h e righ t sid e, uckcd in 1hc back. is a draft pro spec n1 s that describes th e Trauma II , the women's ce nter , the • oth er cle ment s of th e hos pital 1ha1 arc bein g increased in thei r ca paci ty a t,1 their effi cien cies . One of the • • Eng lewood C it y Council September 16, 2002 P,ge 3 th ings that l.i1tle1 on is finding is that we arc drawing the top ph ysicians, orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons to the hosp ital . because th.at is all required for Trau ma '(I, What that mea ns is the diffe rence bet wee n Ill and II and now whal Swedish ha s fo und with Leve l I. is th at yo u ha ve: doc to rs lik e that availab le to us all da y. all night , 24 hours a day.
