That wasn't fun ctioning for a while because thcrt we re n01 enough members in this communiry. But we just wanted to infonn you. he said, that we uc functioning now u t, group . Basically, Mr. Amhed7.adagun advised. the main intent of the Baha •j communuy is to try to foster and develop unity within the commuoirics that we arc in and we just wanted to extend our services to you in whatever way you deem fit, we arc here for you , we arc here 10 scn'c the commu nity. With respect 10 that. he said. we have been invol ved in trying to put together some meetings or forums about intereslin& topi cs of today, such :is how to fo ster world peace . cqualiry, and the equality of men and women. The invi1111ion we arc extend ing is to one of these forums we have already organized . This is actually the second one . The reason we w •• med to come to you as II Co uncil , be said. is because we feel that u you arc .s lread y dis 1inguished members ofth1s co mmun ity. 1hat you really serve as an e ·ample to the mt oftbe co mmunity and yo u are in a posit1on where you can affect a change in tcnns of the se issues , whether it is racial equali1y or equality of men and women. Thal is why we arc here 10 extend !he invi tation . He said he would hand it over to Joshua Wieties to extend the invitation. Mr. \Vietic s offered thanks for the opponunity to address Council . He said, just briefly, he would like to elaborate a little bit on the event itself. This is the second event we have sponsored. The first one, he said, was on the elimination of prejudice nnd how to fos1er race Wllty. It was ve ry successful anJ we were very pleas!!d w11h the outcome . Mr . Wicties advise d th.31 this event is specificall y on the equality of women and men . It will be March 3'd at 7:30 p.m. at the Malley Senior Center . Our main speaker, Dr . Hoda Mahmoudi. is currentl y the Dean of Art and Science at Northeastern lllinoir University. She is a pher.omcnal speaker and sbe spoke on this top ic inleniationally and has had several books and journal anicles published. Her mo st recent jounul article was titled 1'he Role of Men in Establishing the Equality of Women." So , he said. y,e arc incredibly excited •o have such :, phcnorr.:na l speaker here . Wic:ies said he would. of course . like to extend this invitation to the rest of the Englewood community and the cnizcns present this evening . We arc very e:<c ited, he said. and wl! think this is a wa y, 1:ia r we as individuals. can look al how we can affect these things and look at how the community of Englewood itself can begin to tackle and 11ddrcss these issues. You changed it. You didn't listen to the majority . Yot. listened to the minori1y. Mayor Bums advised Mr. Palmer that Council appreciated bu thoughts. We are trying to gel input on this, he said . It is basically a lose lose situation for the City Council, there is no way to wUl this one, but we~ trying to listen 10 the ne ighborhood as best ~ can . Mayor Bums noted that it is a situation that simply doesn't work becau se there isn't enough parking at thll schoo l for everybody who wants to go there. Mr. Palmer said dull is true, but he fell thal if you would stan enforcing the parking and the restrictioru, after a while. they would find sonteplace to park. He pointed out tb.11 Council wants 10 enforce the parking down here because you have trouble with RTD , so you want to enforce that. Why is the parting up there any worse than this down here? Why should this be enforced and not dun ? Mayor Burns noted we :ilso ge l il lot of complai nls when we 1icke1 people up and do\.\TI the streels . He !hanked Mr. Palm<r . (b) Eric Benoluzzi said he wanted to take this oppo1tunity 10. once again. thank 1he Council for the grant to Up Close and Musical . He advised that that ar.rually provided the sce-d money for tht Rhapsody at Civic Cenrer performance 1h11 look place on the 30111• Mr. Benoluzzi commen1ed that he thought it was really a fun. terrific experience and 1h11 C\"ef)body had a F,ood rime . I also wanted to thank Mike Flaherty for helping to establish guidelines for the future""' of tile atrium, he said. and permining the newly established Englewood Culrural Arts Center Association to have access for future perfonnances there . So once again, 1hanks a lot of your contribution. Mayor Bums thanked Mr. Bertoluzzi . He noted they had a wooderful time, that it was I g,e&I cow:en and 1 great evening . I appreciate your wo rk, he said. and Assistant Cily Manager Mike Flaherty ·, work as well. Mr. Flaheny has done yeoman's work on helping us try to determine how to use that area in this ocw building and he has done a great job. a. CommunJcallons. Mayor Bums noted that for those who are not here. we will ·,ee that they grt their pin and their cert1fic:ue . Mayor Bums commented 1bat all ofCounci, kind of agreed that we had one of the bes1 groups of people. applying for the board and comnussion vac:mc1es, we have ever seen . We really had some terrific , dynamic people applying and some younger people 1ha1 ha\'en't been hcrro very 1,,ng and highly educa1ed people . We just had a quality group and we are \'Cl)' pleased abou1 that. he said. Mayor Bums stated Council is very appreciative of the wo rk that all of these fol~ do on all of our boards and commissions .
