The City held an art conte st that was open to all students who live or go to school in Englewood. We received over 100 entries from students in public schools. private sc hoo ls, and home schools in Enslewood. Fifteen entries were chosen for !he cnlendar, she advised . Mnyor Bradshaw said the nrtwork was chosen by il selection panel, which is one of the most fun things she gets 10 do. The pand was made up of City Council Members and Englewood's Cultural Ans Commission. h was my honor 10 ser"e on the selection panel fo r the 2002 calendar, along with City Council Mcmbcn Julie Grazulis and Olga Wolosyn. Janet Moore and Ray Tom.,.sso, as well as Jenn ifer Poner, Educn1ion Director for the Museum of Outdoor Arts. Mayor Brndshaw staled that choosing just fifteen pieces of an to include in the calendu, out of mar.y wonderful entries, w:is not an easy task. She expressed thanks to the SC'lection panel for their efforts. Mayor Bradshaw advised th.a1 the anists' original amvork would be returned 10 them this evening. We ha ve had the pieces matted and framed. The nnists will also receive J certificate of congl'lltula1ions, she said. We would like to offer 3 specia l thanks to A & B Custom Franting hrre in Englewc od for providing 3 genrrous discount on the costs of framing . Dircc1or Olson expressed appreciation for being able to honor and acknowledge several of his employees in the Police Division who have done an e:(.traordinary job in finishing 1hc ten-week school. Th is has been one of our major efforts, he said , to ensure :.hat we have adequate resources , as far as facilities, personnel and equipment, and also provide a superior amount of training to individuals in our organization . There are very few schools in 1he nation that arc cap3ble of providing this . One is the FBI National Academy, and Se1gc11n1 John Collins. who is with the Sou1h Metro Drug Task Force, and who is nol hen: 1onight, co mple1ed the progr::im at the Ac::idemy this past summer . This is son of an unusual bill for an ordinance, be allowed, because we do no1 usually amend our mill levy once it is passed. Because the mill levy was passed before the election, we had lo come back and have Council amend the mill levy to suppon the debt service on the new Parks and Rcmation hoods that wen, passed on NoveU1bcr 6*. So this amends the mill levy 10 1.558 mills for the debt service for the original Community Ccn1cr Debi Service fund and the new Parks and Rccrca1ion bonds . Gruulis, Brodsbaw None Council Member Nabholz (ii) Assistant City Mannger Flaherty presented a rcconm,cndation from the City Manager's Office to consider a bill for an ordinance requeste d by the Englewood Historical Society, transferring owncnhip of the Englewood Depot to the City of Englewood . He said the request was made by the president of the board of the Historical Society. In 1994, he sai d, the Depot was med from demolition by the Englewood Historical Society . Sometime Iller, the City of Englewood acquired the property , thot the Depot was moved to, from the Englewood Housing Au<hority, and 1r111Sferred ownerwp of <he building <o the Historical Society for a fee ofS76,000.00 . The His<or'·al Society bas determined that it is in their bes t interest to request U\At the City take over the O\Vlltrship of the building and to relieve the Histori ca l Soc:iety of that indebtedness. Council Member Yurchick asked if the Historical Society bad repaid the $300,000.00 promissory note to the Housing Authority . Mr. Flaherty replied that the City 1w paid the majority of that through the acquisition of the six lots ot Dartmouth and G ■lapago. The mnaining $76,000.00 was the remaining note that the H~cal Society owed to the City in exchange for the building itself. Now we will have regained the building, so everyone is even. They are awilable for lead, based paint testing, which is a new regulation that HUD is pushing , IS well as public facilities and services , acqui si tion, demoli1i on, and all kinds of things. Our funding for 2002 is $75 ,000 .00 less than we have rece ived in past ycan, and that is due to the County s reformulating our allocation, a.nd it wu affected, primarily, by the addition of the cities ofCenteMial and Greenwood Village into the mix. Thm is a fifth application, which will be outside of our normal commitment, she advised. This is a sepante application to assist the Western Arapahoe County Homeless Alliance in lhe pun:lwc: of the building that lhe House of Hope is cwn,ntly hous,d in, which ii known u Anipahoe House, from Recovery, lncorponted. If they are successful in lhe purchase, the ownership will transfer to the We.stem Arapahoe County Homeless Alliance , she said .
