A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ENGLEWOOtJ PUBLIC LIBRARY TO
IMPLEMENT THE ANNUAL "FOOD FOR FINES" PROGRAM FROM NOVEMBER 19 .
2001 THROUGH DECEMBER 14, 2001.
WHEREAS , the Englewood Public Library bas s ponsored a "Food for Fines" program
during the November/December holidays for the past eleven years: and
WHEREAS, the "Food for Fines" program allows p.trona with overdue finea to "pay"
them off tLrough the donation of non-perishable food items · and
WHEREAS, the food items art• then forwarded to the bterFaith Community Services for
distribution to financially disadvantaged families in the Enslewood area : and
WHEREAS, the program is a benefit to the community in that th e diaadvantaged are
assisted and the air cleared with re spec t to fines and the City receives its library materials
back;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ENGLEWOOD, COLORADO, THA1':
~-The Englewood City Council hereby authorizes the Englewood Public Library's
implementation of the annual "Food For Fines" program from November 19 , 2001 through
December 14, 200 1. The "Food For Fines" will then be forwarded to the Interfaith
Community Services for distribution to financially disadvsntaged families in the Englawood
area .
ADOPTED AND APPROVED this 5"' of No vember, 2001.

November/ Dece mber ho lidays. Th is annual prog ram allows palrons wilh ov erdue tines lo "pay" lhem off lhrough

e donation of non-pe ris hable food items, e.g. one food item ca ncels out 1he lace charges (not losl or damaged
arge s) on one overdue item . Food ilems must be presented to th e Library Staff at eitr,er the Circulation Desk or
al lhe Book mo bil e in order fo r lhe fines to be cleared from 1he palron 's com puter reco rd .
The collecled food ilems are then forwarded lo lnlerFai th Com mun ity Services for their "food bank " dis1 rib u1i on lo
fi nancia lly disadvanlaged families in 1he Englewo od area.
This prog ram has been war ml y received by lhe public sin ce ils incepli on, and Library patro ns now look forward lo
it. Bes ides pro vid in g reso urce s to nee dy families in lhis comm uni ty, the program presents a positi ve image of the
Li bra ry and lhe Ci ty, i.e. a "wi n-wi n" silualion for everyone involved . TI,e 2001 program will run for four weeks.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
• In 2000, the Libra ry coll ecled an esti mal ed S 1,70 0 in no n-pe ris hable food ilems for 1he lnlerFailh Food
Bank .
• The Library averages $ 1,200-$1,j0Q per mon lh in collected "lale cha rges" (i.e. cha rges on books and ot her
ilems re lurne d pas t !heir du e date and pasl the 3 da y grace period ). This money goes inlo 1he City 's General
Fund.
• During this same "Food for !::"!l?S " peri ,Jd fo r the past few yea rs, the amount of ove rdue fines ave ra ges
S800-S 1,000 which means 1ha1 the Cir; will again lose approximalel y $200-Sj0Q in ove rdue cha rges during
this year1s ''Foo d fo r Fi nes" program.
