SERIES OF 2000
A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING THE ENGLEWOOD DEPOT LOCATED AT 3090
SOUTH GALAPAGO STREET AS AN HISTORIC PROPERTY IN THE CITY OF
ENGLEWOOD, COLORADO.
WHEREAS, the Englewood City Council enacted an Historic Preservation Ordinance in
an effort to preserve, protect and promote the value of hwto d c properths located ,rithin the
City of Englewood; and
WHEREAS, the Englewood Depot was erected in 1915; and
WHEREAS, the Englewood Depot waa build in the "county seat" atyle of architecture
with atucco on wood frame and ia the only known aurviving b";ldinr of its type in Colorado;
and
WHEREAS, the Englewood Depot aerved Englewood and nearby Ft. Logan and helped to
distinguia!i Englewood as a city in and of itself, aeparate from Denver; and
WHEREAS, aa of November 9, 1994, the Englewo
Register of Histcric Places as Site No. 5AH778; and

WHEREAS, the Englewood Depot meets the criteria set forth in the Englewood Historic
Preaervation Ordinance:
• The Englewood Depot is at least 50 years old.
• It is a building, structure within a district which embody distinguishing
characteristics of an architectural type inherently valuable for a study of a
period , style, method of construction, or of indigenous ma!eria1' or
craftsmanship .
• It is a structure which exemplifies the broad cultural, political, economic or social
bistcry of Englewood.
WHEREAS , the Englewood Planning and Zoning Commiseion held o Public Hearing on
July 18 , 2000 and the Englewood Planning and Zoning Commission recommended designation
of the Englewood Depot as an Englewood Historic property;

NOW, THEREFORE , BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ENGLEWOOD, COLORADO , THAT:

RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Staff recommends that City Council adopt the attached Resolution for Historic Property
Designation for the Englewood Depot, located at 3090 South Galapago Street.
BACKGROUND:

Englewood Historical Society has applied for Historic Property Designation tor the Englewood
Depot. Erected In 1915, the Depot was built in the •county sear style of architecture with stucco
on wood frame an,j Is the only known surviving building of Its type In Colorado. The Depot
served Englewooc l and nearby Ft. Logan and helped to distinguish Englewood as a city in and
of itseff, separate ·:rom Denver. This structure has been Hsted on the State Register of Historic
Places (as of 11/09/94, Site# 5AH778).
Staff recommend!; approval of this application based on the criteria set forth In Historic
Preservation Ordinance (16-4-24) and is supported by documentation asserting the structure Is:
• at least 50 years old;
• a building, structure or group of structures within a district which embody distinguishing
characteri&1ics of an architectural type inherently valuable for a study of a period, style,
method of construction , or of indigenous materials or craftsmanship;
• a structure which exemplifies the broad cultural, polttical , economic or social history of
the Ci ; of Englewood .
On July 18, 2000 a Public Hearing was held before the Englewood Planning and Zllning
Commission . The Commission unanimoualy recommended this property for Historic Property
des ignation. Findings of Fact were approved on August 8, 2000 and support of this
recommendation is being passed on to Ci t / Council for final authorization .
No te that the designati on is being sought for the Englewood Depot itself, and the designation
has no connection to the Depot's sits or location, as it is known to have been moved from a
previous !;ite to the current location .

Tilis matter was heard before the City Planning and Zoning Commission on
July 18. 2000, in the City Council Chambers of the Englewood Civic Center.
Testimony was received from staff. The Commission received notice of Public
Hearing, and the Staff Report. which were lneorporated into and made a part of
the record of the Public Hearing.
Neither Ms . Scott, nor any member of the ge neral public was present to testify
on this Issue.
After consideling the statement5 of the witnesses. and revieWing the pertinent
documents, the i: embers of the City Planning and Zoning Commission made
the folloWing Findings and Conclusions.
FINDINGS OF FACT
l. THAT the application for Historic Designation of the Englewood Depot.
3090 South Galapago Street. was filed by Ms. Cindy Scott on behalf of
the Englewood Historical Society.
2. THAT notice of the Public Hearing was glve:1 by publication in the official
City newspaper, the Englewood Herald . on July 7, 2000.
3 . THAT testimony was received from Planning Analyst Dannemili~:r regard-
ing eligibility of the Englewood Depot structure for Historic Desiguation.

THAT historic designation ls sought only for the Englewood Depot struc-
ture, not the site at 3090 South .<i,alapqo Street, because the Depot has
been relocated from Its original site.

THAT no member of the general public was In attendance to address the
Commission on this Issue.

3 . THAT the Englewood Depot does meet eligibility requirements for His·
torte Designation:
a . The structure must be at least 50 years old.
This particular stru.:ture was built in 1915.

THEREFORE, It Is the decision of the City Planning and Zoning Commlaslon
that the Englewood Depot structure, presently locat.:d at 3Q9,0 South G~pago
Stre~t. should be granted Historic Designation status. 1
The decision was reached upon a vote on a motion made at the meettng1of the
City Planning and Zoning Commission on July 18, 2000, by ,Weber, seconded
by Willis. which motion states:
The Planning Commission approves and recommends historic designation for
the Englewood Depot structure. presently located at 3090 South Galapago
Street.
