HomeMy WebLinkAbout1994 Resolution No. 051RESOLUTION O . _:j_ SERIES OF 1994 A RESOLUTIO SUPPORTING THE REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION DISTRICT's (RID) PLAN TO DEVELOP MASS TRANSIT ALONG SOlJfH SANTA FE DRIVE . WHERE AS, the City Council of the City of Englewood, Colorado has a lur .g history of suoport for the development of mass transportation projects, including Resolution 1980-11: A resolution endorsing plans for RTD o build a light-rail system; and Resolution 1989-74: A resolution proclaiming the City 's continuing concern for e~;-Jy completion of mass transit facilities along the Santa Fe Corri clc ; and Resolution 1990-16: A resolution supporting H.B . 1174, in concept, relating to ma,,s transportation projects; and Reso1ution 1990-7: A resolution supporting DRCOG Draft S.B. 208 and for p lacing the Southwest Transit Corridor in first priority for construction of a fix P<l guideway mass transit system; and Resolution 199246: A resolution supporting the Regionnl l:ransportation District's deci si r,n to pursue ~onstruction of the metro us'" connection transit corri d c-r utilizing an alignment from Auraria .=-~mpus to 1-25 and Broadwdy; and WHEREAS, RID recommended a 73 mile netw<>rk of at1t<>mated rapid transit in 1975; and WHEREAS, the Santa FP Final Environmental Impart Statement was approved in 1978 for widening the highway from four to six la.ies and reserving 30 feet of right-of-way for a transit corridor; and WHEREAS, the Technical Analysis and Technology Assessment completed in 1986 recommended the "Southwest Corridor," a corridor aligned wi th South Santa Fe Drive, and "Southeast Corridor," a corridor adjacent to 1-25, as the next i:-· · . .)riry rapid transit corridors; and WHEREAS, in 1987 RTD identified the Southwest Corridor as its priority corridor; and WHEREAS, in 1987 the Denver Regi onal Council of Governments identified the Southwest Corridor as the next priority rapid transit corridor; and WHEREAS, m l >o9 d Southwest/Southeast threshold analysis was completed and -reco:nmended the Southwest Corridor; and WHEREAS, RTD initiate..i an "Altcematives Al 1lysis" to select the best mass transit alternative for the South west Corridor in December of 1992; and WHEREAS, the alternatives analysis evaluated four ma ss transit technologies, inci·,ding Transportation System Management, Busway, Light Rail Transit, and Commuter Rail ;and WHEREAS, RID has chosen Light Rail Transit as the preferred alternative for a mass transit system adjacent to So uth Santa Fe Drive; and WHEREAS, the Southwest Corridor Light Rail project has completed a lengthy federal process and is in line to re ceive Federal financial assistance; and WHEREAS, with FcJtcal assistance, the Southwest Corridor light rail construction can be completed with no new taices assigned to the project; ~d WHEREAS , Englewood Ci ty Co uncil Members and Englewood employees have been updated about, and involved with, the Southwest Corridor Study from its inception; NOW , THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COL CIL OF THE CITY OF ENGLEWOOD, COLORADO, THAT: Section..L The City Council of the City of Englewood sup ports, and ha s supported for approximately 20 years, the development of a mass transit adjacent to South Santa Fe Drive .
