YMCA MAYORS AND COHH~SSIONERS YOUTH AWARD
MARY WHITE
I would lik e to nominate Mar y White for the Metropoli tan
Mayors and Commi s sioners Youth Award. Mary has served as the You th
Comm issioner on the Englewood Parks and Recreat ion Commis sion for
two years. Her voice on the Co mmiss ion represented the young
pe opl e of the co1M1unity in the development of an off-street
s kateboard park and the expansion of recreatio n activities for
young adults at t he Englewood Recreation Center.
Mary has had a strong sense of personal commi ttment to her
church for many years. She has been actively involved in the
church youth group by her attendance at such activities as: Food
Share Distribution, visits to a coffee house that serves
developmentally delayed teens, visits to nursing homes, working on
food serving lines at a shelter for the homeless. Mary is sharing
her mu s ical talents by her involvement in the music ministry at her
church . Sh e plays for Mass every Sunday ar.:i her p1 ·esence is a
pleasant addition to the worship service. In addition, Mary
teaches religious education classes at church. She has twenty-
seven third and fourth grads students this yeP.r. She touches the
lives of these youngsters on a weekly basis . They love and respect
her as a young adult in their church family.
In asking Mary how she might· have demonstrated additional
iniative and commitment, she told me about her experience getting
a job one summer. It appears she wanted a job desperately but
being only fourteen excluded her from most opportunities. She took
it upon herself to start her own business of house, plant and pet
sitting for p0ople who were going on vacation. She surveyed the
area for p r ice ranges , developed a scale of prices for her
services, designed an advertising brochure on the computer, h ad the
brochure printed and then canvassed the neighborhood handing them
out. She interviewed perspective customers, accepted the jobs, did
the work, generated statements for payment purposes, and collected
her money. She had a very busy summer with many satis fied
c ustomers!
Mary has not been without cha l lenges in her life. She has had
to overcome the loss of her older brother and has a c cepted the
adoption o f her younger bo r the r . She has had to go through testing
and hospital prepara tions to be a donor f or a bo ne marrow
transpl an t. She has also had to be interviewed by social workers
a nd ask e d why she wou ld want to have a new ba by at her house. She
handled all of this with a generous sens :'.tivity and a great deal
of maturity .
e
M!\R!I WHITE
Mary had prepared a list of activities and awards on the
attached resume. Please accept this list ss an indication of the
t ype o f dedication and commitment she has to her school and her
comm unity.
When you meet Mary White, you will most certainly be struck
by he r smile . She seems to glow when she is around peo ple. She
is a dependable participant in a group and one you can count on t o
res pend with hone s tly and directness. I asked her mother to share
a few thoughts with me about Mary for this nomination. I would
l ike to include those here.
"Mary is a great kid! Every family should have a daughter and
a sister like Mary . She is giving of herself. She is kind and
patient with her younger brother, and she's growing and developing
into a strong, independent adult who will continue to make
contr.ibutions to her family and her community." I would c e rtainly
echo these words. Mary is most deserving of your award and a model
for others her age to look up to.
