ON TI-IE soum PLAT!'E RIVER IN Tiffi CITY OF SHERIDAN. COLORADO.
WHEREAS, the United States Army Cc.rps o f I~ 1ineer s has constructed a
Dam on the South Platte River in the vicin ·,ty of un ;on Ave nue in the City of
She rid,m ; and
1,m:RF.>.S , the Eng le1,uod City Council i s concerned about the design of
the Dam; and
WHEREAS, an engineering feasibility study for a bY-pass s truc ture at
the Union Avenue Dam wa s ccmnissioned by the Co l or ado Water Con servation
Board ; and
WHEREAS, the City of Engl""-'ClOd, the City of Sheridan , the Co l o rado
Water Conservation Board, Ur ban Drainage ar,d Flood Control Di strict, U.S . Army
Corps o f Engineers , South Suburban Metropolitan Park Di strict and wright Water
Engineers have held nun-e rcus maetings to develop a recamendation on safety
roodif icat i on s t G the Unio n Avenue Dam ; and
WHEREAS, the res ult c f these meetings , is a consensus recamendation
labeled Alternative 2A a s sul:mi t ted bY Wri ght Water Eng ineers and provides for
a s eries of drop stnictu.r es bel ow t:1e Un ion Ave nue Dam; ar ,d
WHER.9..5, this alternative has been presented to the Engle-.,xxl City
Council as the rrost effective nethod to i.nprcve s afety char acteristics in the
area of the Union Avenue Dam site and also provi de for sore recreational use
o f the river ;

neeting of 5epte!l'ber 23 , 1988.

1l1e Co l or ado Water Conservation Board authori ze final design and
construction of the safet y rrodifications in order to have the
i.nµroverrent s in pl ace prior to the spring run-off in 1989.
