HomeMy WebLinkAbout1974 Resolution No. 044RF.SOWTION NO. ft::L_, smIF.S OF 1974 • A RESOWTION RELATING TO REVENUE SHARING. • • IH!REAS, the City or ~lewood has annually received $626,883 of vitally needed physical assistance through the allocation of Federal dollars under the General Revenue Sharing program; and WHEREAS, the Revenue Sharing dollars are received directly from the Federal government with a m1n1DDD of Federal bureaucratic red tape which enables the City of Englewood to use their Revenue Sharing funds to meet the locally determined priority needs of the camnunity; and IH!R!AS, the citizens of the City of Englewood view their locally elected officials as being accountable for the expenditure of Revenue Sharing dollars, and that such clearly defined accountability has resulted in increased citizen involvement in identifying the priority needs of the conmunity; and WHEREAS, the City or Englewood has appropriated $1.4 million of Revenue Sharing funds that have been received during the past two years as r o llown : Servicenter Construction Storm Drainage Law Enforcement Media Centers Risk Management llmicipal Band Program Camnunity Attitudinal Study Band Wagon Senior Surrey River Developnent Jaycees Fireworks Recreation Supervisor Total $ 255,000 454,227 79,279 7,514 5,800 1,000 20,000 18,000 25,971 550,000 400 9,029 n-, 426, 220 WHEREAS, the citizens ot the City of £rwlewood are being severely affected by the spiraling and unprecedented rate of inflation which is stripp1Jw them of their hard-earned income; and WHEREAS, the current inflationary rate of 12% is also undermining the ability of the City to provide essential services to the conmunity within reasonable and acceptable levels of local taxation; and IR!R!AS, the General Revrue Sharing program is providing essential physical relief to the devas-ating impact of inflation; and WHEREAS, the General Revenue Sharing program which began in 1972 will terminate in 1976 unless the 91.th Congress, which is being elected this November and will convene in January, 1975, authorizes the extension of the General Revenue Sharing program; and • • • I ' II~, the termination or the General Revenue Sharing program wi ll p]8CP 1.'t'tfo CJt.y or F.nr.l~t in t.hr unt.rnnbl c ponttion or e ither hnving to decrease essential ccmmunity services, or raising taxes, or by doing both • NOW, 1111':rtEFORF., OJo: TT ltF.r.OLVJo:O 111AT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ENOL!IOOD unanimously endorses the continuation of the General Revenue Sharing program and calls upon the 94th Corwress to re-enact the General Revenue Sharing program in order to insure that vitally needed Federal assistance will be provided to the Cfty o r '"'lewooo. Be it rurther resolved that the candidates for the United States House of Representatives frcm the 5th Co~essional district, and the candidates for the United States Senate from the State of Colorado, be requested to publicly state their eupport for the re-enactment of the General Revenue Sharing program, in order tor the citizens to be int'ormed of their conment, or lack thereof, to this essential Federal assistance program. Be it further resolved tmt a copy of the Resolution be 1.nmediately f'orwarded to the following Congressional candidates. William .Aiwatronc, Republican candidate for u. s. House of Representatives Dr. Ben Qe.llony, Democratic candidate for U. S. House of Representatives Gary Hart, Democratic candidate for U. S. Senate Peter H. Dcninick, Republican candidate for U. S. Senate and that a public written response be inmediately requested fran each candidate which clearly states his position on the continuation of the General Revenue Sharing program.
