HomeMy WebLinkAbout1968 Resolution No. 044I I I RESOLUTION NO. 44, SERIES OF 1968 A RESOLUTION ON TWO INITIATIVE PETITIONS CONCERNING TRAFFIC WITHIN THE CITY OF ENGLEWOOD. WHEREAS, the City council has received petitions initiating ordinances which would have the effect of prohibiting one-way streets within the City, and requiring the re-institution of left turns at the intersection of South Bannock Street with Colorado Highway 70: and, WHEREAS, the City Council finds these petitions to be suf ficic nt and has caused them to be placed on the ballot for the November 5, 1968, election: and, WHEREAS, the City council has carefully reviewed these ordinances: and, WHEREAS, it feels that the citizens, in casting their votes on these issues, should be apprized of a number of important factors as follows: l. Traffic patterns and volumes change from time to time, depending upon many factors. 2. The City should not be denied the use of one-way streets as a practical method of moving traffic safely and efficiently. 3. Traffic control and traffic safety are matters which should be decided by competent professional engineers under the general guidance of the City Council. 4. Eliminating all one-way streets would result in expenses of major proportion which would divert monies from other needed services. 5. Passage of these two ordinances would require an extensive overhaul of our downtown traffic pattern with resulting unnecessary confusion to the motorists. 6. Restoration of east bound to north bound left turns at the intersection of South Bannock Street and Colorado Highway 70 runs counter to the court liti- gation currently in effect, and would pose serious legal problems, as well as being in direct opposition to the wishes of the Colorado Department of Highways. 7. The one-way traffic pattern has received favorable reconunendations by the engineering firm of Small Cooley and Associates and by the City of Englewood's Planning Conunission. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City council requests the voters to vote against the Ordinances for the afore- said reasons. 7 Mayor ATTEST: STEPHEN A.
