HomeMy WebLinkAbout2022-10-03 Indigenous Peoples' DayM� � 1' �J: J M� I _ M, =J 1 WHEREAS, the City of Englewood recognizes that our nation was founded upon the principles that all people are created equal and that each person has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; and WHEREAS, Indigenous Peoples' Day was first proposed in 1977 by a delegation of Native nations to the United Nations sponsored International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in America; and WHEREAS, Indigenous people occupied and cared for the lands encompassed by Englewood, Arapahoe County, Colorado and the United States since before recorded history; and WHEREAS, Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations have been adopted by cities and states across the United States. As of 2020, 14 states and more than 130 cities celebrated Indigenous Peoples Day; and WHEREAS, in a 2016 report prepared by the Governor of Colorado's Commission to Study American Indian Representation in Public Schools, commission Chair Clement Frost of the Southern Ute Tribe called for the state to "recognize the role of American Indians in Colorado's history and to ensure that this history is taught comprehensively and accurately"; and WHEREAS, the City of Englewood recognizes and values Indigenous people and their descendants many contributions to our community, both historical and contemporary; and WHEREAS the City established the staff -based Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee made up of 19 staff members from all departments that unanimously approved a recommendation of an Indigenous Peoples' Day proclamation. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED THAT, I Othoniel Sierra, Mayor of the City of Englewood, Colorado ("the City") and the City Council, hereby proclaim: The second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples' Day in the City of Englewood and urge all citizens to become more aware of the history and contributions of Indigenous Peoples' in Colorado and the United States.
