HomeMy WebLinkAbout2022-02-28 Black History MonthWHEREAS, the City of Englewood is strengthened by and thrives upon the rich diversity of all its residents, all of which contribute to the vibrant character of the community; WHEREAS, the City of Englewood recognizes that our nation was founded upon the principles that all people are created equal and that each person has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and pays tribute to the contributions that African Americans have made to American history in their struggles for freedom and equality and deepens our understanding of our shared history as well as remembering important and influential people and events in the history of the African diaspora; and WHEREAS, in 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, established the observance of African American History, to focus on the contributions, achievements, and involvement of African American people in the development of our American democracy; and WHEREAS, the observance of Black History Month calls our attention to the continued need to build a society that lives up to its democratic ideals and celebrate the many achievements and contributions made by Black Americans to our economy, cultural, spiritual, and political development; and WHEREAS, the City of Englewood strives to be an inclusive community in which all citizens-past, present, and future-are respected and recognized for their contributions and potential contributions to our community, the state, the country, and the world; and, WHEREAS the City established the staff-based Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee made up of 19 staff members from all departments that unanimously approved a recommendation establishing February as Black History Month in Englewood; WHEREAS the City of Englewood is proud to honor the history and contributions of black people in our community and throughout our state and nation; 1 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED THAT, I Othoniel Sierra, Mayor of the City of Englewood, Colorado ("the City") and the City Council, hereby proclaim: February as Black History Month in the City of Englewood and encourage all residents to consider the many contributions of black Americans to our community and world.
