HomeMy WebLinkAbout2022-04-18 National and International Celebration of Earth DayWHEREAS, on April 22, 1970, United States Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin and
Denis Hayes organized the first nation-wide day devoted to environmental awareness and
education that was celebrated by an estimated 20 million Americans;
WHEREAS, this day of environmental awareness and education is celebrated world-wide
in some 180 countries, with the participation of over 4,000 separate organizations;
WHEREAS, individuals and institutions have a mutual responsibility to seek ecological,
economical and ethical choices that enable the world, as well as our individual communities, to
establish and maintain sustainable societies;
WHEREAS, the global theme for Earth Day 2022 is "Invest in Our Planet," which focuses
on accelerating solutions to combat our greatest threat, climate change, and to activate
everyone -governments, citizens, and businesses -to do their part. Everyone accounted for,
and everyone accountable; and
WHEREAS, on April 5th , 2021, the Englewood City Council approved the City's first
sustainability plan, cementing a commitment to protecting our environment.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that I, Othoniel Sierra, Mayor and the
Englewood City Council hereby proclaims:
Friday, April 22, 2022, in the City of Englewood, national and
international celebration of "Earth Day."
