CALL TO ORDER The Alliance for Commerce in Englewood meeting was called to order at 11 :35 a.m. in the City Council Conference Room of Englewood Civic Center, Chair Van Der Zwaag presiding. RESIGNATIONS Ashenfelter, Guinther, Schalk, Van Der Zwaag Panetta, Taylor, Young Rees Yurchick McDermott Jan Johnson , Busine ss and Rede v elopment Coordinator D arren Hollin gsworth, Business Development Specialist Lance Smith , Chief Building Official Councilp erson Olga Wolosy n Ch air Van Der Zwaag stated he recently took on the responsibility of managing th e commercial loan division for the entire Front Range which w ill impact the time he has to commit as Chair of ACE. Chair Van Der Zwaag resigned as Chair, but stated he would like to continue as a member of the Commission . Staff stated that Vice Chair Panetta was aware of the situation and will become the Ch air. Elections for a new Vice Chair will be conducted at the December meeting. Commiss ion members congratulated Chair Van Der Z w aag on h is promotion . Staff reported that Marily n Brenengen resigned from the Chamber of Commerce. Margaret McDermott, Co-chair of the Chamber, will be the liaison to ACE. Mr. Rees stated that the Chamber was going through budget cutbacks . A letter from the Chamber was distributed appointing Ms. McDermott as their liaison to ACE. Ms . Guinther expressed her deep regret on losing Ms. Brenengen and suggested the Commission send Ms . Brenen gen a letter expressing its appreciation for the time she served as Chamber liaison to ACE and as Ex ecutive Director of the Chamber. Ill. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Ms. Ashenfelter stated the Shared City Line was not attached to the Minutes as indicated . • • • Ms. Guinther moved; Mr. Schalk seconded: THAT THE MINUTES OF OCTOBER 10, 2002 BE APPROVED WITH THE SHARED CITY LINE ATIACHED. Motion carried. IV. OPEN HOUSE The Commission discussed the open house at the Gothic Theatre and ways to improve attendance . Ms . Guinther suggested sending out personalized invitations. Mr. Yurchick suggested talking to City Council regarding a column in the Englewood Citizen dedicated to ACE. Staff stated that it would like the Commission 's involvement with the Business Appreciation Breakfast which will be held sometime in the Spring, and then would like the Commission to host another open house in the Fall , perhaps October. Mr. Schalk stated a business owner spoke to him regarding pawn shops and the image they project on Englewood . Discussion ensued regarding pawn shops. Members asked staff to research pawn shop regulations in Denver . Staff thanked members for attending the event. V. CITY COUNCIL STUDY SESSION Staff distributed additional information that went in the City Council packet. A draft agenda for the Study Session on November 12 was also distributed. Discussion ensued regarding the study session. VI. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE UPDATES Staff distributed the Chamber's nomination form for the business and community awards which was discussed at the October meeting. The Chamber would like the award process as inclusive as possible and is suggesting nominating businesses for different categories. Ms. Wolosyn stated the Chamber is depending on ACE for nominations for the City of Englewood Employee award. Nominations are due by December 1. The Chamber's annual holiday event is scheduled for December 12 at Alexan CityCenter. The Chamber has asked ACE to co-sponsor the event; it requires no financial commitment but ACE would appear on the invitation. Ms. Ashenfelter moved; Mr. Schalk seconded : TO CO-SPONSOR THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HOLIDAY EVENT . Motion carried. 2 •• VII. OTHER BUSINESS Ms. Guinther stated Old Town Englewood is planning for the holiday season with a Shop Englewood theme. The group is discussing lighting up Broadway and stores staying open until 8 p .m. one night a week during the holiday season. The group is also discussing marketing and communication, and would appreciate any ideas ACE could provide. Staff stated that South Metro Chamber of Commerce is holding an Economic Forecast Breakfast on Tuesday, December 10. Staff will register any members interested in attending. Since next year is Englewood's centennial, staff would like to focus the Business Appreciation Breakfast on that theme highlighting long-time businesses and business owners in Englewood. A subcommittee for the breakfast may need to be formed . The breakfast will be held in April or May. The marketing CD is in the final stages and should be available by January. Staff distributed a letter from Mayor Bradshaw and City Council thanking the Commission for considering the vendor fee issue . • Staff stated the kiosk should be up before the end of the year . • Staff and Mr. Rees are working on a broker forum to be held in January. Staff is also working on scheduling a lender forum . Ms. Wolosyn stated there was new activity on the shuttle project. Denver Regional Council of Governments had extra funds and Community Development applied for the funds for the shuttle project on a one-year trial basis . RTD is ready to partner for three years and then is willing to take over the project. Discussion ensued regarding the need for a hotel in Englewood. Staff reported on new retail and office activity within the City. VIII. ADIOURNMENT There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 12:40 p.m. ~o~Secrera~ 3
