CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of July 6, 2011 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:47 pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the Community Development Conference Room at the Civic Center. Present: Absent: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson (left at 6:15pm) Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Karen Kenney , Commission Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Jill Wilson, City Council Liaison Commission Member Kristy Reed (arrived at 6:20pm) Jerrell Black, ex officio Tamara Emmanuel , Commission Member Kate Dulaney , Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood School District Liaison Heather Bartunek, Commission Member II. REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes to the agenda. Ill. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes to the minutes of May 4, 2011. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. The minutes from the June 1, 2011 meeting were not approved due to there not being a quorum of members present from that meeting . IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS There were no guests. V. NEW BUSINESS Commission Member Maggie Stewart updated Commission members on the upcoming events featuring Rebecca Lolosoli, co-founder of the Umoja Uaso Woman's Village in Kenya, a refuge for abused women. Stewart told Commission that there had been great publicity and web support getting information out regarding Ms . Lolosoli 's presentation at Hampden Hall on July 21 at ?pm. Stewart added that Ms . Lolosoli would be leading a beading class with renowned beading artist Wendy Ellsworth at Hampden Hall on Wednesday, July 20, from 6-9pm . Stewart provided flyers and posters for the events. Stewart then announced that the programming of Hampden Hall had been transferred to Library staff, and spoke highly of the Library's new Director, Dorothy Hargrave, as well as her staff. Jerrell Black told Commission members about a celebration later in July regarding Miller Field. Black explained that the Field had been dedicated 60 years ago to Denny Miller, a 12 year old boy from a prominent Englewood family who passed away in 1951. Black continued, saying that the fundraising and events surrounding the building of the Field had been a huge part of Englewood 's history, and that Bob Hope had even been in attendance. Black said Blair Brady, Denny Miller's nephew , had written a memoir, "Between You, Me- ... And the Fence Post", documenting his family's history in Englewood , including the creation of Miller Field. Black explained that Mr. Brady would be in Englewood the week of July 25 to attend book signings and photographic exhibitions at the Rec Center and Malley Center as well as the Library. Black said that Tuesday , July 26, "60 1h Anniversary Game Night" was scheduled at Miller Field beginning at 4:30pm. Black invited Commission members to all events, announcing that the 60 1h Anniversary Game Night would include the presentation of a donated sculpture of a six-foot bat from the Brady family to the City; followed by Englewood youth baseball teams playing baseball on the Field . Black added that the Parks and Recreation Department would be providing refreshment for guests. Black ended discussion by suggesting that Commission do a formal recommendation to City Council to accept the sculpture donated by the Brady family. Discussion followed , including where the Sculpture might be placed. Black said that decision had not been finalized. A motion was made by Commission Member Stewart and seconded by Commission Member Schnitzer to recommend to City Council acceptance of the Denny Miller Memorial Sculpture according to the Gift In Kind Contribution Form. The motion passed unanimously. Jerrell Black said staff would meet with City Council Monday night to update them about the Miller celebration. VI. OLD BUSINESS Donna Schnitzer told Commission that gardens in the Community Garden was doing well and that several meetings had been held. Schnitzer added that Groundbreaking had occurred at the Charles Hay Garden and that there was tremendous neighborhood support there . Schnitzer said that a plot had become available at the Community Garden that Cafe 180 had acquired. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS There was no update on Public Art. Maggie Stewart commented on the fireworks show at Belleview Park on July 4, saying she thought it was the best show in the area . Jerrell Black said that estimates were that 30,000 people were in attendance. Regarding Englewood Arts, Eric Bertoluzzi mentioned the transfer of Hampden Hall scheduling to Library staff. Bertoluzzi said that he appreciated the City's cooperation in scheduling the facility, in particular the support from Michael Flaherty , Deputy Assistant Manager. Donna Schnitzer informed Commission that the Department had won two Arapahoe County Open Space Grants, one for Riverside Park and one for the Centennial Trail. Jerrell Black added that the Department had also been awarded a grant from Fishing is Fun for $13,000. Schnitzer mentioned another grant awarded to the Department, the Make A Splash Grant which had enabled 270 kids to participate in free swimming lessons. Lastly, Schnitzer reminded Commission members about the Sounds of Summer Concerts being held on Thursday nights . Bertoluzzi informed Commission about a new show at MOA, "Light Supply", an exhibition from multiple artists working with lights and sound. VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS Donna Schnitzer asked if anyone had any ideas for the Commission's craft booth at Funfest in Belleview Park in August. Commission Member Karen Kenney suggested tying in the Rebecca Lolosoli bead making story with a bead making booth for kids where they could be educated about Ms. Lolosoli's cause . Black told Commission members that staff would be glad to help procure supplies for the booth and asked Karen Kenney to forward information. Donna Schnitzer said she would inform Commission members about the plans for the booth. IX. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE Jerrell Black welcomed new Commission Member Kristy Reed to the Commission . Black said that the Cultural Arts Commission is an action oriented Board and that she will enjoy being a member. Black spoke about the letter included in the packet inviting everyone to the Annual Board, Commission and Authority Appreciation Night at Pirates Cove on August 8 at 6:00pm. Black invited Commission members to come at 4:30pm to enjoy free swim time . Black then told Commission members about a project he and IT Director Jeff Konishi are coordinating to install security cameras in numerous City facilities. Black explained that Council had approved the project last year, and after a lot of time spent they were close to finalizing the product as well as the financing. Black added that a Study Session would be scheduled with City Council to update them about the project. Lastly , Black said that three racquetball courts at the Rec Center are scheduled to be replaced starting August 8 with the construction lasting for four weeks, and that the fourth court will be replaced next year. X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Karen Kenney commented that she was glad to hear about projects in progress and things being replaced. Jerrell Black said that sales tax revenue was up compared to 2010 which was a very positive sign. Black added that some projects being worked on are due to grants which are tied to shareback funds. Black said that the Department had been very fortunate to apply for and receive $300 ,000 in grants and $600 ,000 in shareback funds . Maggie Stewart commented that Pirates Cove appeared to be doing very well. Black said that last year over 120,000 visitors had enjoyed the Park and that an expansion is planned in the next few years. Karen Kenney announced that she had moved out of Englewood and asked if she could remain on the Commission . Black said that she could. Kenny then told Commission about an idea she had for a Public Art project involving "foamcore" in 3 ' x 3 ' pieces for people to work on and create a puzzle. Commission agreed to consider the project. Karen offered to do more research to bring back to the Commission. Kenney then asked if the group was agreeable to meeting at Cate 180. Schnitzer replied that the Commission had agreed to meet there in October. Commission Member Reed asked about the reason for the meeting place. Kenney answered that the intent was to bridge the gap between the City government, business, and the arts. Schnitzer then asked Reed about her arts background . Reed explained that she had recently returned to Colorado after being in France and China for 16 years. Reed said that her background was in cultural anthropology, specifically language and culture. Commission members welcomed Reed. XI. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 6:50pm.
