Call to Order City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of August 6, 2011 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:47 pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center, 1000 Englewood Parkway. Present: Absent: Also Present: Review of Agenda Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Donna Schnitzer, Vice Chairperson Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Tamara Emmanuel, Commission Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Jill Wilson, City Council Liaison (arrived at 6:22pm) Kristy Reed, Commission Member Jerrell Black, ex officio Karen Kenney, Commission Member Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood School District Liaison Dorothy Hargrove, Director of Library Services Deb Parker, Executive Assistant, Library Services There were no changes to the agenda. Approval of Minutes Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes to the minutes of July 6, 2011. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. Introduction of Guests Dorothy Hargrove, Director of Library Services , and Deb Parker, Executive Assistant for Library Services, were introduced. Ms. Hargrove told the Commission about herself. V. New Business Commission Member Stewart briefed the Commission on the beading class and presentation with Rebecca Lolosoli that were held on July 20 1h and July 21 51 • Stewart reported hat approximately 25 people had attended the beading class which turned out to be a very colorful and important evening. Stewart also informed the Commission of some improvements that had been made with the Hampden Hall lighting. Bertoluzzi complimented Stewart regarding the improvements and inquired if the one percent art fund could be used to purchase a drop-down screen for Hamdpen Hall. Discussion followed . Director Black stated that he would take a look at the guidelines to determine if the funds could be used for the purchase. • • • v. Vice Chairperson Schnitzer asked in regard to the art on the walls in Hampden Hall. Ms . Parker reported that once the Rebecca Lolosoli art is taken down in Hampden Hall , the art that was previously in Hampden Hall will go back up . Commission Member Emmanuel asked if a commission member can make a suggestion for an art opening. Black replied yes and explained that just as Commission Member Kenney was told in regard to her proposal , the commission member would need to present a proposal to the Board for its approval. Emmanuel asked in regard to how much time to expect , asking if 6-9 months is substantial. Black told Emmanuel that even more would be better for the Library. Stewart told commission members that the Commission needs to revisit all that it's done before and suggested "fattening " up art that is currently on display in Hampden Hal l. Black stated that it needs to be planned out. In regard to Stewart's suggestion to revisit past shows in Hampden Hall , Black stated that staff would put together a listing of uses of Hampden Hall in the next packet. Ms . Hargrove told the Commission that the Library also gets requests for art shows in the Library and suggested that the shows could be crossed over. Black discussed the Denny Miller 60 1h Anniversary celebration that was held last week . Black discussed the event and the impact to the community and informed the Commission that the family had presented the City with a 6' sculpture of a wooden baseball bat. Ms. Hargrove added that the Library had been presented with a photo collage. Old Business Emmanuel informed the commission that Art reach and Colorado International School would be hosting booths at this year's Funfest that is scheduled for Saturday, August 13 . Emmanuel and Schnitzer discussed the craft project for the Cultural Arts Commission booth finding volunteers to work the booth . Schnitzer gave an update on the community garden, stating that the food bank plot is go ing well and another gate for the garden has been built by an Eagle Scout. VII. Committee Reports There was no update for Public Art. In regard to Englewood Arts, Bertoluzzi reported that the printing of the 2011-2012 concert schedule is almost complete. Bertoluzzi stated that there w ill be a new concert this year, an appreciation concert for the Scientific and Cultural Facili t ies District. Schnitzer gave an update on the July Parks and Recreation Commission meeting . VIII. Upcoming Events Recreation Manager Joe Sack gave an overview of scheduled activities for Funfest. With the arrival of City Council Liaison Jill Wilson , Wilson spoke in regard to her experience at the Rebecca Lolosoli beading class and presentation, stating that it was a very heartwarming and humbling experience. Bertoluzzi asked Wilson if the budget process has begun. Wilson stated that they are in the very beginning stage of the budget process. Discussion followed. Schntizer also told Wilson how much her support of the community garden is appreciated. Stewart agreed with Schnitzer. • • • IX. Director's Choice Black reminded commission members of the August 81h Board and Commission Appreciation Night at Pirates Cove. Black explained that City Council is very pleased with the number of people who donate their time to serve on the boards and commissions and this is Council 's opportunity to show its appreciation . In regard to the 2012 budget process, Black told the Commission that Monday night will be the first discussion on the 2012 budget. Black explained that all Departments are having to look at reductions for next year and that the Parks and Recreation budget will include the elimination of two positions, a Recreation Program Administrator and a Parks Specialist, both of which are currently vacant. Black went on to explain that the vacant positions will give Parks and Recreation staff the opportunity to review the internal structure of the Department and do some reorganization where needed. Black discussed how each Department in the City will be trying to accommodate the impact of the 2012 budget while causing the least amount of impact to citizens . Black noted though that Parks and Recreation staff will again have to be look at program areas for possible reductions. X. Commission Member's Choice Schnitzer discussed free art classes that will be offered through the Museum of Outdoor Arts. Schnitzer recommended that commission members see the Museum of Outdoor Arts "Light Supply" exhibit. Schnitzer also asked that Dahla Horses/Shots for Tots be put on the September agenda for discussion . Sack informed comm ission members that the Sounds of Summer Concerts are winding down with the last concert being next Thursday, August 1ih. Sack noted that one concert had to be rescheduled due to inclement weather . Emmanuel thanked commission members for their help with Funfest. Commission Member Reed spoke in regard to Alliance Francaise, a French Cultural and Educational Center in Denver, and if there was any interest from the Commission in partnering with the Center in hosting a concert. Commission members concurred that it was worth discussing in more detail at the September meeting. XI. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 6:00pm. Isl D.Severa Recording Secretary
