IV. Introduction of Guests
There were no guests .
V. New Business
In regard to last month 's discussion regarding a projector screen for Hampden Hall, Manager
of Recreation , Joe Sack, informed the Commission that he, along with the Library Director
Dorothy Hargrove and Library Executive Assistant Deb Parker have been researching the
cost for the screen. Sack stated that there is a company who did some work in the Library
who has submitted a proposal for $30 ,000 which they feel is too high. Sack reported that Ms.
Hargrove has done some research on her own and has found that a projector screen, on the
low end , will cost about $5 ,000. Sack suggested that the Commission wait to make a
recommendation when more information is available. Discussion followed regarding other
equipment that may be needed and if additional wiring for sound will be necessary .
Commission members were told that judging of art for the 2012 Englewood Calendar will take
place during next month's Commission meeting. Commission members were also invited to
• participate in the Top 50 Selection on Monday, October 3rd.
• v.
Commission Member Reed told the Commission that she has met with the Marketing Director
of Alliance Francaise but that the new Director will not arrive until October so she will be
talking to him at a later time to get more direction . Bertoluzzi asked Reed what type of
project she is thinking of doing. Reed told Bertoluzzi that she is looking at Alliance Francaise
doing a concert or some other type of event that involves children, mixed language and the
arts . Reed went on to explain that Alliance Francaise often does similar projects so she feels
it is highly possible that they will do something. Discussion followed.
Per request at last month's meeting, Sack told the Commission that information regarding
Hamdpen Hall usage has been provided in the packet. Discussion followed. Stewart
suggested having a liaison from the Library on the Cultural Arts Commission or having a
Cultural Arts Commission liaison on the Library Board. Sack replied that he would bring the
inquiry to Director Black's attention.
Sack discussed the upcoming Parks and Recreation Art Exhibit scheduled for October 18-24
in Hampden Hall and how entries and attendance have declined over the past several years.
Stewart asked Sack what the Cultural Arts Commission could do to help make the show
more successful. Sack replied that commission members could help get the information out
to as many artists as possible which in turn could bring in more entries and hopefully
attendees. Sack also told commission members that they could assist in setting up,
organizing and hanging the art. Sack explained that the show is for hobby artists and not
professionals .
Old Business
In regard to holding the October Cultural Arts Commission meeting at Cafe 180, the
Commission was informed that Commission Member Kenney was unable to make
arrangements with the restaurant so the meeting will be held at its usual location in the City
Council Conference Room of the Civic Center building . Sack also noted that it probably
would have not been held at Cafe 180 anyway due to the judging of art for the calendar being
scheduled for the October meeting.
Sack reported that Funfest went very well with approximately 2500 to 3000 people attending
the event. Sack thanked everyone who made the event possible and commented that the
Cultural Arts Commission booth was very popular.
Commission Member Schnitzer gave an update on the community garden . Schnitzer
reported that over the last eight weeks the community garden has donated more than 490
pounds of produce to His Hands Food Bank in Englewood. Commission members were
invited to the end of the season party at the community garden on September 1 yth at 7:30pm.
VII. Committee Reports
There was no update for Public Art.
• Bertoluzzi distributed the 2011-2012 Englewood Arts concert schedule.
•
An update on the August Parks and Recreation Commission meeting followed. Sack
reported that the two new community gardens at Clayton Elementary and Charles Hay World
School are coming along. Stewart added that the community garden at Clayton Elementary
has helped to also start up an art garden at the school.
Wilson asked in regard to the status of art for the Englewood community garden. Stewart
replied that she was waiting to have a conversation with the community garden steering
committee. Commission members were told that there seems to be some resistance in
bringing art into the garden. Sack explained that the existing steering committee is thinking
about growing produce and not about art. City Council Liaison Jill Wilson commented that it
was the Cultural Arts Commission who got the garden started and it is tragic that art in the
garden has gotten pushed back. Bertoluzzi asked who owns the garden. Sack reported that
the City owns the garden but it is managed through a group of volunteers. Wilson stated that
the Cultural Arts Commission got the community garden going with the mission statement
that art would be included . Discussion followed . Sack told the Commission that the process
of placing a piece of art in the community garden follows the same criteria as any other piece
of art that is placed on City property. Sack explained the process to commission members
and told them that it is also explained in the Art in Public Places/Art Selection Guidelines that
was distributed in their April 2011 packet. Bertoluzzi suggested discussing it further at next
month's meeting and forming a committee if necessary.

•

City Council meeting. Wilson stated that there were people who had attended the meeting in
support of the shuttle and spoke in regard to how much it means to them and how it allows
them to spend money in Englewood. Wilson reported that the majority vote for City Council
was in support of keeping the Art Shuttle. Discussion followed.
