CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of February 2, 2011 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:46pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room. Present: Absent : Also Present: Eric Bertoluzzi , Chairperson Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Karen Kenney, Commission Member Jill Wilson, City Council Liaison Jerrell Black, ex officio Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Tamara Emmanuel, Alternate Member Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood Schools Liaison Kate Dulaney, Englewood Schools Liaison Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Tim Vacca, Museum of Outdoor Arts Representative REVIEW OF AGENDA • III. Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or additions to the agenda. There were none . APPROVAL OF MINUTES • Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of January 5, 2011. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS There were no guests. V. NEW BUSINESS Black sadly informed the Commission that Vice Chairperson Janet Moore has passed away. Black told commission members that Dave Slutzker, Janet Moore 's husband , had sent a letter to Chairperson Bertoluzzi asking that it be read at tonight's meeting. Black read the letter to the Commission. Commission members took a few minutes to remember Janet and all that she did for the arts . Black informed commission members that City Council has appointed new members to the Cultural Arts Commission and that the formal appointment would be on February 7, 2011. Black stated that he knows that the new members will contribute a lot to the Board. Commission members were told that Janet Moore's vacancy was not on the list. Black explained that City Council holds Board and Commission interviews every six months but that he will talk to the City Manager 's Office to see if the vacancy can be filled earlier or if they will need to wait until July. Bertoluzzi asked if the alternate member will automatically fill a vacancy. Black replied no, that the alternate member needs to notify the City Manager's Office that he/she is interested in filling the vacant position and then City Council will make the decision. Bertoluzzi clarified that the alternate member is a non-voting member. Black replied that is correct. City Council Liaison Jill Wilson stated • that she is also a non-voting member. Black replied that is correct. Discussion followed in regard to length of terms on the Cultural Arts Commission and various boards and commissions in the City. VI. OLD BUSINESS Discussion turned to an update on the community garden. Commission Member Schnitzer told the Commission that applications for the community garden have been revised and will be availab le to gardeners beginning Monday, February 7th. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS There was no update for Public Art. In regard to an update for Englewood Arts , Bertoluzzi stated that the recent changes in the City Manager's Office and now working with Deputy City Manager Mike Flaherty for Hampden Hall are going smoothly and issues are being handled very nicely. Commission Member Bartunek verified that Mr. Flaherty is the point of contact for getting approval to hang art in Hampden Hall. Black stated that as of now, Mike Flaherty is the point of contact for all Hampden Hall issues. Discussion followed regarding a problem with a phone line and credit card machine in the ticket booth. Black stated that the problem is probably due to a recent change over with the City's phone system . Black told Bertoluzzi • that he would follow-up with Mike Flaherty and the IT Department. Commission Member Schnitzer gave an update on the Parks and Recreation Commission. Schnitzer told the Commission that she had recently attended the NuStep Pinnacle Award ceremony at the Malley Senior Recreation Center where Malley was recognized as the 2011 NuStep Pinnacle Award winner and received a new NuStep Recumbent Cross Trainer. Black added that Malley is the first in the state of Colorado to receive this national award that recognizes excellence in older adult wellness programming. VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS Bertoluzzi announced that the next Englewood Arts concert, "Rosetta Chamber Society" will be at 2pm on Saturday, February 13th at Hampden Hall. MOA Representative Tim Vacca reported that MOA had approximately 50 ,000 people attend Hudson Holidays this past season. IX. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE Black spoke in regard to the Tri-County community garden grant that the City is partnering with Denver Urban Gardens and Englewood Schools. Black told the Commission that meetings have been held at Clayton and Charles Hay to get the planning started for steering committees, etc. Black also stated that Michael Buchaneau with Denver Urban Gardens will be working with the groups regarding design for the gardens. Black stated that plans • • are for construction to begin during the summer so not to disrupt school and be ready for the fall school year. Black also explained that a number of plots will be reserved for citizen use. Black reported that the Intergovernmental Agreement with Englewood Schools will be taken to City Council in the next four to six weeks for final approval. Commission members were told that at a recent Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, Recreation Facility and Program Supervisor, Brad Anderson discussed with commission members how Pirates Cove handles its own concessions and at the end of the 2010 season had some frozen food left over. Black told commission members that the vendor told Anderson that it did not want the food back but that it would not charge the City for the food so Anderson donated the food to the Well-Fed organization, the volunteer group that provides food on the weekends for Englewood's needy families . X. COMMISSION MEMBERS CHOICE Wilson informed the Commission that Englewood Schools Superintendent Brian Ewert will be attending some of the City's Boards and Commissions , including the Cultural Arts Commission, to give an update on the state of Englewood schools . Commission Member Karen Kenney stated that she recently had lunch at Cafe 180 and after talking to the owner, he suggested that the Cultural Arts Commission hold one of its meetings at the restaurant; Kenney suggested possibly in May. Discussion followed . Vacca told the Commission of a new website by Google Art "www.googleartproject.com" and the potential it has for museums with smaller collections in addition to the website • www .publicartarchive.org, a database for public art collections. • Bartunek spoke in regard to the passing of Janet Moore and all that she did for the Cultural Arts Commission and Englewood Arts. Bartunek suggested doing something in remembrance of Janet. Schnitzer stated that she did beautiful paintings. Recreation Manager Hultberg told the Commission that it could use money from the one percent art fund to purchase a piece of Janet's artwork to hang as a permanent art piece in Hampden Hall. Commission members concurred with Hultberg's suggestion. Black stated that he would follow up with Janet ' husband and bring back the information in March for discussion . Bertoluzzi spoke in regard to Janet and how his life was blessed from knowing her. Bertoluzzi talked about how he remembered when Janet joined the Cultural Arts Commission and how Olga Wolosyn had spoken so highly of Janet. Bertoluzzi told the Commission that Janet was a very lovely, genuine person who served the arts so lovingly and generously. Bertoluzzi then turned discussion over to the retirement of Recreation Manager Gary Hultberg who will be retiring from the City on March 4th. Bertoluzzi acknowledged Hultberg for his service and loyalty to the Commission and arts and told him he would be greatly missed. Commission members concurred with Bertoluzzi . Black told the Commission that this is Hultberg's last Cultural Arts Commission meeting and that Hultberg wanted to keep his retirement low-key. Black discussed all that Hultberg XI. has done for the Cultural Arts Commission and the arts. Black told Hultberg that he will be a loss to the Board and the City and he will be greatly missed .
