Call to Order City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of April 4, 2012 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Vice Chairperson Schnitzer at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center building, 1000 Englewood Parkway . Present: Donna Schnitzer, Vice Chairperson Maggie Stewart , Commission Member Kristy Reed , Commission Member Jill Wilson , City Council Liaison Absent: Eric Bertoluzzi , Chairperson Tamara Emmanuel, Commission Member Kaylene Mccrum , Commission Member Karen Kenney , Commission Member Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood School District Liaison Also Present: Joe Sack , Recreation Manager Tim Vacca, Museum of Outdoor Representative II. Review of Agenda There were no changes to the agenda . Ill. Approval of Minutes Schnitzer asked if there were any changes to the minutes of March 7, 2012. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. Introduction of Guests There were no guests present. V. New Business Commission Member Stewart spoke in regard to art for the community garden and commissioning George Peters , the artist that currently has an exhibition at the Museum of Outdoor Arts called Sky on a String that consists of fabric kites/artwork. Stewart also spoke in regard to commissioning George Peters to do a piece of art for the Art at the Shuttle Stops . Discussion followed . Stewart distributed information on Mr. Peters website, www.airworksstudio.com, and encouraged commission members to go online and view Mr. Peters artwork in addition to visit MOA 's exhibit for further discussion at next month's meeting. Sack told the Commission that shade is a big issue for the gardeners and whatever kind of structure is decided, they need to be mindful of what is created. Discussion turned to Art at the Shuttle Stops. Stewart gave some statistics on the program, noting that it has been in place for approximately seven years and how some art has never been replaced in addition to there currently being eight vacant spaces for art. Discussion followed. Stewart discussed doing an invitation for art with artists that they know rather than doing a call for entry, stating that it would be the cheapest way to go. VI. Old Business Sack gave an update on the donated piece of artwork , Optimistic Attitude of Life. Sack reported that the Library has possession of the artwork and has received proposals on the costs to have the artwork framed. Commission members were told that it will cost $300 to have the scroll cut from the fabric and have it framed under Plexiglas or $1,000 to have it preserved and placed in a shadow box. Sack told the Commission that he wanted to bring the information to the Commission to see what the Commission wanted to do for the next step. Commission members agreed that it needed to be hung and not separated. Following discussion, A motion was made by Commission Member Stewart and seconded by Commission Member Reed that Optimistic Attitude to Life needs to be hung as is and not put in a box because it would be inauthentic. All were in favor. The motion passed. VII. Committee Reports Schnitzer and City Council Liaison Jill Wilson gave a report on the Kent Place Art. Schnitzer and Wilson reported that ( $20,000 or $14,000) has been set aside for the artwork that includes funding for lighting. Discussion followed . There was no update for Englewood Arts. Schnitzer asked how the Commission will receive updates on Englewood Arts come July when Chairperson Bertoluzzi will no longer be on the Commission. Sack suggested that either Bertoluzzi could email updates to be put in the packet or have a representative attend a meeting twice a year or so to give an update. An update on the March Parks and Recreation Commission meeting followed . Sack gave a report on the community gardens in Englewood and said that both the Charles Hay and Clayton gardens are ready for planting. For the City's community garden, Schnitzer reported that everything is going great and that there are 8 to 9 new gardeners. VIII. Upcoming Events Stewart discussed Chamber of Commerce's plans for a new event, Breasts of Colorado, in support of Colorado Breast Cancer. Commission members were told of the Englewood Schools District Art Show on April 5th in the Englewood Public Library. IX. Director's Choice There were no items for Director's Choice . X. Commission Member's Choice In regard to Bertoluzzi 's discussion at last month's meeting on arts in education, including how Englewood Arts can be more involved in education, Commission Member Reed stated that she works for the Colorado Department of Education and if the Commission is interested , she can invite Karol Gates , Fine Arts Content Specialist , to a Commission meeting to discuss the collaboration of commun ity resources in developing a fine arts plan. Reed stated that she has made available a link to the Arts Education in Colorado Guidebook for those commission members that are interested . Discussion followed including whether Ms. Gates needs to meet with the Commission or just with Bertoluzzi. Wilson informed the Commission of the Englewood Library Board 's Meet the Authors event on April 22 nd . Sack announced that the City Manage r's Office has approved a Social Medial Policy that will mean people can now follow Parks and Recreation on Facebook , Twitter, etc . Sack reported that the first electronic newsletter for Parks and Recreation is scheduled to go out the last week in April. Discussion followed regarding the current advertising and future means of advertising for the Department. XI. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 7:11 pm . D . Severa , Recording Secretary
