CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of February 1, 2012
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was
called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room
at the Civic Center building, 1000 Englewood Parkway.

Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes to the agenda . There were none.
Ill. Approval of Minutes
Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes to the minutes of January 4,
2012. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented.
IV. Introduction of Guests
Bertoluzzi welcomed Mayor Randy Penn. Commission members introduced themselves
to Mayor Penn . Mayor Penn told the Commission that he is attending all of the boards
and commissions for the City of Englewood. Discussion followed.
V. New Business
Bertoluzzi turned discussion over to Recreation Manager Joe Sack to discuss the
development of Duncan Park . Sack told the Commission that Parks and Recreation
staff have been working with Britina, a design firm for the development of Duncan
Park . Sack reported that they have been meeting with the neighbors and
Englewood citizens to gather and review data and as the project nears completion
they will be sharing the finalized plan with the Board. Commission members were
informed that the plan does call for an art piece in which they will be coming to the
Commission for its help. Bertoluzzi asked if the Department had received a grant for
the planning and facilitator. Sack replied that the Department had received a grant
that is being used to hire Britina. Sack explained that once the plan is approved by
City Council , the Department will pursue additional funding to develop Duncan Park .
Bertoluzzi asked if the old school building on the property will be taken down. Sack
stated that the building will be completely removed and the area will be returned into
grass so that it can be used by the neighborhood. Discussion ensued .
VI. Old Business
Sack informed the Commission that staff is follow i ng up on a proposal from a company
who had previously done work in the Council Chambers. Sack reported that the proposal
discusses things that can be done in Hampden Hall such as sound issues and moving
controls to the back of the room. Commission members were told that staff would come
back with more informat ion. City Council Liaison Jill Wilson asked if the City needs to go
out for bid . Sack explained that they w ill probably not need to go out for bid because the
City has been using this company and they are already familiar with the electrical system
and layout of the building .
Discuss ion turned to cataloguing of art. Sack told commission members that some
staffing changes were recently made in Parks and Recreation and when things settle
down the task of cataloguing of art will be delegated to Program Administrator Cheryl
Adamson.
Wilson informed the Commiss ion that a committee is being formed for the selection of a
piece of art for the Kent Place development. Commission members were told that the
committee will consist of herself, representing City Council , two people from the
development, two residents , Cynthia Madden Leitner from MOA and a representative
from the Cultural Arts Commiss ion.
Bertoluzzi opened the floor for nominations. Commission Member
Emmanuel nominated herself, stating that she grew up in the neighborhood
and attended school where the development is located . Commission
Member Stewart nominated Vice Chairperson Schnitzer based on her years
as a professional artist and the number of years she has been on the Board.
Discussion followed.
Bertoluzzi asked for a vote.
Emmanuel 2 votes Schnitzer 3 votes
Schnitzer would serve on the Kent Place Art Committee .
In regard to the Asian piece of art that was donated to City Council , Sack reported that at
the December meeting , informat ion was reported incorrect ly in that City Council had
requested that the art piece be placed in Hampden Hall. Sack stated that the City
Council had requested that the Cultural Arts Commission suggest a place where the
piece of art can be placed. Sack asked the Board members where they think the best
place would be to place the art piece . Discussion followed. Sack explained that
whatever suggestions there are , staff would review and pursue . Commission Member
Stewart suggested the Malley Senior Center. Bertoluzzi brought up the issue of
accepting every piece of art that is donated to the City. Stewart noted that the City did
not accept Prometheus so it has already been established that the City does not do that.
MOA Representative Tim Vacca explained that there are different ways of donating a
piece of art and this piece of art was not donated but rather presented as a gift to the
City . In regard to the Englewood Public Library , Wilson commented that there is not
enough space. Discussion ensued . Bertoluzzi reported that it sounds like the Board is
not ready to make a formal recommendation . Stewart suggested that over the next
month board members look around and bring back ideas . Stewart also requested that a
photo of the art piece be emailed to commission members with dimensions .
VII. Committee Reports
In regard to a piece of art for the community garden , Stewart discussed coordinat ing with
Community Development's Art at the Shuttle Stop program in creating a contest to get a
piece of art for the garden. Discussion followed . Bertoluzzi asked Stewart to put a
proposal together for the Commission to review . Stewart stated she would have it at next
month 's meeting .
Bertoluzzi reported that Englewood Arts concerts a re going great with 130 to 170 people
in attendance at every concert and Englewood Schools have embraced the Strings
Attached program with ove r 120 students signed up .
There was no update for the Parks and Recreation Commission.
VIII. Upcoming Events
Bertoluzzi announced the upcoming February 11 th Englewood Arts concert , Duo Espirit .
Schnitzer informed the Commission that Englewood Live is looking for someone from the
Cultural Arts Commission to interview for its upcoming performance . Emmanuel stated
that she may possibly be interested.
IX. Director's Choice
There were no items for Director's Choice .
X . Commission Member's Choice
Wilson informed the Commission that C ity Council has appointed a new member to the
Cultural Arts Commission . Wilson stated that she will be a good fit.
Vacca discussed upcoming shows for the Museum of Outdoor Arts.
Mayor Penn thanked the Board for letting him to sit in on the meeting . Penn stated that
he is learning many things . In regard to Wilson's discussion on the new appointment to
the Cultural Arts Commission , Penn told the Commission that Council had 21 openings
with 31 applicants ; noting that there were many qualified candidates.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:00pm.
