HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-06-04 CAC MINUTESCity of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of June 4, 1997 The regularly scheduled meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Chairman Spangenberg at the Englewood Recreation Center, Conference Room. Members Present: Spangenberg , Styes , Lindsey , LaPorta Kreiger, Black, ex officio Peterso n, Gootee ' Members Absent: Also present: Gary Hultberg, Recreation Service Manager Alex Habenicht, City Council Liaison Amemarie Leonard , Engle wood Public Library Board Liaison Debra Kolacny,,Englewood School Board Liaison Spangenberg informed Commission members that the minutes of December 4, 1996, January 8 , 1997, February 5, 1997 , March 5 , 1997, April 2, 1997 and May 7 , 1997 would be approved as presented . Spangenberg asked if there were any additions or correction s to the minutes. Spangenberg had a correction which would be forwarded on to Debby Severa, Record ing Se cretary . The c hange would be noted in the July minutes. Spangenberg led discussion re g arding the Cultural Art C ommission retreat held on Saturday, May 3 1 ". Comments included "good team b u ilding", "learned structure" and "very informative". Commissi o n agreed the document created from the retreat would be used for formal new member orientation. Black announced that the document would be ready and distributed at the July meeting. Commission members discussed the idea of forming st and ing and special committees to work on specific projects. The committees would report back to the Commission at the monthly Commission meetings . Fe elings expressed by the members were that the positi ve retreat atmosphere had carried over to tonight 's meeting. Spangenberg reviewed the idea presented at the retreat re garding the Chairman 's term being a two year elected position with the option of bein g elected to one more additional consecutive year. Spangenberg opened discussion regarding the creation and/or support of a Cultural Corridor along Santa Fe. The corridor would include the Museum of Outdoor Art at Cinderella City . Discussion also included how the bike paths could be connected . Commission member LaPorta Krei ger and School Board Liaison Kolacny arrived at 6 :05pm. Spangenberg moved that the Cultural Arts Commission form a 2003 committee. Commission member Styes seconded the motion . The motion carried 4-0 . Discussion followed as to the purpose of the committee. The committee would work on several projects including : 1. A Cultural Arts Master Plan, 2. Creation of a Cultural Corridor, 3. Convening of interested parties to determine interest and structure of 2003 Centennial Festival, 4. Supporting the Museum of Outdoor Art move to Cinderella City. Kolacny indicated that her husband could develop a rendering of the cultural corridor. Spangenberg asked Black if the City could provide an aerial view of the City of Englewood. Black stated that he would pursue it. Commission member Lindsey shared her husband's interest in bringing a hot rod show to the Plaza next summer to correspond with EDDA's "Sounds of Summer" concert series . Council member Habenicht entertained the idea of forming three committees: 1. Committee of the whole -Cultural Arts ~ommission -for Cultural Arts Commission plan 2. Cultural Corridor Committee 3. Convening Committee -Festival 2003 Centennial Habenicht indicated that she would be interested in chairing the convening committee . Kolacny indicated interest in the Cultural Corridor Committc;:e. After some discussion , Styes moved to remove the first motion and action creating the 2003 Committee . Commission member Lindsey seconded the motion . The motion passed 4-0. Styes motioned to accept Habenicht's three committee proposal as previously stated. Commission member Lindsey seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0. Habenicht departed at 6:55pm. Lindsey and LaPorta Kreiger volunteered to be members on the Convening Committee. Styes volunteered to join the Cultural Corridor Committee. Spangenberg asked the Convening Committee to provide a written report for the August meeting. Spangenberg asked for a Cultural Corridor Committee report for the August meeting . Lindsey inquired if City Council was still accepting applications for the Cultural Arts Commission. Black indicated that the deadline had passed, but they might still accept late applications . Commission members were reminded that the law requirement of meetings attended by three or more required public notice . Black suggested calling Hultberg or himself to make proper public posting. Black updated Commission members on the Belleview Airplane . Black had met with Council member Vormittag . It is hoped to have the project completed by July 4th . Pending completion of the project, there will be a dedication at the July 4th celebration. The airplane will be moved 15 feet west and elevated. Two plaques will be set: a Martin Marietta plaque with the history of the missile and a City of Englewood plaque which will list City Council, Parks and Recreation Commission members and Cultural Art Commission members . Kolacny announced Flood Middle School had won the Blue Ribbon Award. Black reported that the City of Englewood will hang a banner across Broadway recognizing Flood Middle School. LaPorta Kreiger inquired if Black could help to determine building and ground maintenance costs for the Museum of Outdoor Art. Black explained that Parks staff provided an estimate on landscape and ground maintenance to Neighborhood and Business Development. Spangenberg announced that she and. LaPorta Kreiger had scheduled a meeting with City Manager Doug Clark and Neighborhood and Business Development Director Bob Simpson to discuss the Museum of Outdoor Art proposal and related costs and revenues . Spangenberg announced the June 9th Study Session regarding Cinderella City Devel~t. All members were encouraged to attend. Lindsey said she would be attending the Tent Talk meeting on Thursday . Lindsey also announced that she had been selected to represent the City of Englewood and the Clean, Green and Proud Commission at a national convention in San Antonio. Styes thanked Spangenberg for doing a good job on the Cultural Art Commission newsletter. Spangenberg distributed additional newsletters and thanked Hultberg and Debby Severa for getting them printed and mailed . Styes moved to adjourn the meeting . Lindsey seconqed the motion.
