HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-07-02 CAC MINUTESCity of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of July 2, 1997 The regular scheduled meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5 :45pm by Chairman Spangenberg at the Englewood Recreation Center, Conference Room. Members Pr esent : Members Absent: Also present: Spangenberg, Lindsey, Gerlick, Black, ex officio Styes, Krueger, LaPona Kreiger, Peterson, Gootee . Gary Hultberg, Recreation Service Manager Amemarie Leonard, Englewood Public Library Board Liaison Olga Wolosyn, Appointee to Cultural Arts Commission A quorum was not present to approve the minutes. The minutes would be approved at next months meeting or later in the meeting if more members arrived. Span genberg introduced Ol ga Wolosyn, a new appointee to the Cultural Arts Commission. Spangenberg informed the Commission that Ray Tomasso was also appointed to the Commission and that Spangenberg and Krueger were re-appointed . Spangenberg commented on the June 9, 1997 Study Session that the Commission members had been invited to. Spangenberg, LaPorta Kreiger and Hultberg had attended the meeting. Spangenberg stated she was speaking for herself when saying she was disappointed that the invitees were not asked to speak. Commission member Lindsey reported she had received grant opportunities from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO). Copies would be distributed to Commission members. Lindsey spoke of her trip to a San Antonio conference as a representative of the City of Englewood, Clean, Green and Proud Commission. L indsey also spoke of her experience at the G-8 Summit. Commission member Gerlick arrived at 6:02pm. Commission member Lindsey left at 6:05pm . Spangenberg ann ounced that Commission members were invited to the July 7u. Study Session. Agenda items include Skip Miller and Cinderella City developments, and the new members being sworn in. Regarding Lindse y's announcement on the GOCO gr ants, Black indicated that the Department of Parks and Recreation would also be pursuing GOCO grants in August. With the arrival of Gerlick, the minutes of June 4, 1997 were accepted as presented. Spangenberg asked if a financial report would be available at next months meeting. Commission members discussed the donations received for the Feasibility Study and what should be done with the funds. Spangenberg indicated she had kept in touch with some of the donors . Sp angenberg distributed information regarding the Centennial Committee. It was noted that Habenicht had met with Edith Romans. Commission Liaison Leonard reported that she had been appointed to the Centennial Committee as a member from the Public Library Board. In regards to the Cultural Corridor Committee, Black explained that Commission Liaison Kolacny was putting information together for the City of Englewood map and plan on Cinderella C ity Black indicated the aerial photo was too large to copy but are looking at options. A report will be given in September. Spangenberg discussed funding for the two light rail stations. Spangenberg explained that each station has been allotted $36,000 for artistic, functional amenities. The $72,000 for the two stations can be divided up any way. Pauletta Puncerelli will be representing the City of Englewood. The formation of a committee is being suggested. Commission discussed the Sounds of Summer concert series. Spangenberg spoke of Englewood groups performing at intermissions. Gerlick stated that the cast of South Pacific would be performing at the July 24th concert. It was decided that interested groups should contact Spangenberg or Black. Spangenberg commented on a recent incident where a lady contacted the Englewood Recreation Center for information related to the Cultural Arts Commission . The lady was told that they had never heard of the Commission. Black would look into the incident. Black followed-up on Spangenberg's question asked at the retreat regarding proxy voting . Black had talked to the City Attorney and was told that it could be done through conference calling where board members would be polled . Black noted, though, that none of tJ:e City of Englewood boards and commission's use proxy voting. Black explained that Robert's Rules of Order dbes not use it. The new procedure manual was distributed to Commission members. Black discussed having an orientation for new members, along with any interested existing members and liaisons. Commission members were reminded of the July 4th Celebration and the Belleview Airplane dedication. City Council member Al Vormittag will be acknowledged for his efforts . Two plaques will be displayed, one recognizing City Council, Parks and Recreation Commission and Cultural Arts Commission. The other plaque, provided by Martin Marietta, will display the history of the missile . Hultberg reported on Art in the Plaza. The program started in 1996 with the suggestion by Parks and Recreation Commission member Neyer. Eight 4/4 boards, painted by the Playground and Adventure Camp participants were displayed in the Plaza for two weeks during EDDA's Sounds of Summer concert series. The Department had received favorable comments. Neyer had suggested some improvements for 1997's program. Sixteen 3/3 boards will be displayed, during two intervals. Adventure Camp's art will be displayed the weeks of the June 26th and July 3rd concerts . The boards will then be taken down and repainted for Playgrounds . Playgrounds ' boards will be displayed the weeks of the July 31st and August 7th concerts. Suggested theme for the boards is "Activities in the Park". Gerlick announced the Department of Parks and Recreation production "South Pacific" will open July 31st through August 3rd. Complimentary tickets will be offered to Commission members. Gerlick inquired as to the property at Broadway near the Plaza. Black indicated that the Department of Neighborhood and Business Development has looked at the property as a retail site. Black was not aware of any further details. Leonard apprised Commission of a recent neighborhood meeting to discuss an RTD Light Rail Leonard explained it was that neighbors were Leonard expressed the importance of informing neighbors and neighborhoods of changes . Spangenberg reminded Commission members of the July 7th Study Session. The meeting was adjourned at 6:57pm. Deborah A. Severa, Recording Secretary
