Cultural Arts Commission
Minutes of January 8, 1997
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Ans Commission was called to
order at 5 :46pm by Co-Chairman LaPorta at the Englewood Public Library, Perrin Room .

The minutes of December 4, 1996 will be approved at the February meeting due to a quorum not
being met.
Black regretted to report that Commission member Donelson submitted her resign ati on to the
Cultural Arts Commissi on that afternoon . Due to personal family issues , Donelson felt she was not able to
dedicate the necessary time to the Cultural Arts Commission .
Black stated D o ne lson 's re si gn ati o n would be submitted to City Council for a new appointment to
the Cultural Ans Commi ssion. Co-Chairman Spangenberg asked if it was possible to recommend a person
as a replacement. Black replied that the y could encourage a person to apply or submit an application , but
council will conduct interviews and make an appointment.
In regard s to the Auction on Saturday, February 8, 1997 , Black reported the Englewood Recreation
Center would be available at 5 :30pm on Friday , February 7lh for preparation of the auction .
Blac k explained a banner to hang across Broadway has been reserved for the auction. LaPorta
Kreiger volunteered to contact Gary Ty son to coordinate the details .
Black asked if there were flyer s for the auction, and offered services to have the flyers printed
Spangenberg informed the Commission that Swallow Hill Music Ass ociation contacted Alex
Habenicht and herself concerning a new location for their facility . Spangenberg explained they have been
in Denver for over twenty years and have outgrown their existing facility . They are considering the City of
Englewood as a location.
Spangenberg announced that Holly Gleiforst would be the Chamber of Commerce liaison to the
Cultural Arts Commission . Gleiforst presented a check from Norwest Bank for the feasibility study at the
December meeting.
Commission was updated on the Englewood Focusin g on Tomorrow by Spangenberg .
Spangenberg explained that a Cultural Ans Education Task Force was being formed, and of grant
possibilities through EFOT. Spangenberg hoped that the members would be able attend the meetings.
Spangenberg reported she had contacted Mayor Tom'Burns in regards to misperceptions that the
Cultural Arts Commission was looking at Cinderella City as the solution to a Cultural Arts Facility.
Spangenberg explained to the Mayor that the only requirement was that the cultural art facility be located in
the City of Englewood . Spangenberg invited the Mayor to attend a Cultural Arts Commission meeting .
Spangenberg mentioned of a recent article in the December 26, 1996 Englewood Herald. The
article concerned the City of Englewood's Civic Leaders visions for 1997. LaPorta Kreiger and the
Cultural Arts Commission were included in the article. A copy of the article will be included in the
minutes .

Commissioner Krueger .questioned a motion made at the December 4th meeting concerning that
25% of proceeds of sales will not be going back to the artist. LaPorta Kreiger explained that decision was
based on the amount of work and time it would take to reimburse each artist.
Regarding the donation of art items for the 'auction, LaPorta Kreiger reported she was having a
positive response and expected over a hundred pieces of artwork .
Commission Liaison Leonard questioned if a sales tax license was needed. Black stated that the
Commission would go under the City of Englewood, Park and Recreation 's sales tax license.
It was announced that a sub-committee meeting would take place on Monday, January 13, 1997 at
LaPorta Art Gallery.
LaPorta Kreiger suggested a form was necessary to show the donated artwork was a charitable
donation. Black would follow-up with the City Attorney 's office.
Discussion followed regarding the distribution of bid cards, tickets, etc. at the auction.
B Jack informed Commission of minor renovations taking place at the Englewood Recreation
Center. Black stated that once the renovations were completed, the Cultural Arts Commission meetings
would be at the Englewood Recreation Center.
Black announced that the new Recreation Service Manager, Gary Hultberg, would be attending
future Cultural Arts Commission meetings.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:31 pm.
