Cultural Arts Commission
Minutes of May 7, 1997
The regularly scheduled meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to
order at 5:50pm by Chairman Spangenberg at the Englewood Recreation Center, Conference Room.

Due to a quorum not being met, the minutes will be approved at next month's meeting.
Chairman Spangenberg reported that she, Black and Hultberg had met with Larry Gloss to discuss
further where the Cultural Arts Commission needed to begin . Hultberg felt Gloss had a better
understanding of the Commission 's needs following the second meeting. A proposal was distributed to the
members .
Spangenberg informed Commission members that a retreat with Larry Gloss has been scheduled
for Saturday, May 31, 1997 at the Englewood Golf Course Maintenance Facility from 9am to 4pm.
Spangenberg explained that only the voting members would be attending the retreat Larry Gloss would
meet with voting members and liaisons together at a later date.
Spangenberg reported that Gloss would be distributing a pre-manual at the retreat similar to those
of other art organizations and city department boards and commissions. C ouncil member Habenicht
requested that the duties of the liaisons be included in the manual. Discussion ensued regarding the manual.
Liaison Leonard asked what had happened with some of the projects discussed in the past year.
Spangenberg explained that the projects had been put on hold until the retreat took place and more people
were on the Board.
Commission member Styes asked if a long-term plan would be created on the 31 si. Spangenberg
responded no but that direction would be given on developing such a plan.
Styes also asked if the planning process required a full day . Styes suggested using the first half the
day for the planning process, and the second half for goal setting. Spangenberg felt the entire day was
necessary for the planning . If time was available, two or three goals would be tied in with the process.
Styes felt it was necessary to have a block of time to set goals and objectives whether Gloss was present or
not. Habenicht responded that the liaisons should be included in the goals and objectives setting process.
Liaison Gerlick added that teambuilding is an important part of the process and that the liaisons should be
included. Commission discussed whether the liaisons should attend the retreat, and the format of the retreat.
Youth Commission member Peterson left at 6:38pm .
Hultberg reported that he would talk to Larry Gloss concerning the Commission's questions, and
plan the retreat based on his opinion.
Gerlick suggested the Cultural Arts Commission solicit information from other Cultural Art
Commissions in regards to their process, operations, and goals and objectives . Spangenberg stated that it
had been discussed at one of the first Cultural Arts Commission meetings.
Gerlick informed Commission that he had attended a Cultural Arts Council meeting in Littleton as
a representative from ACT Englewood. Representatives from other art organizations from Arapahoe
County and the South Metro area were also present to discus~ each organizations' needs.
Gerlick announced that auditions for the Sun;uner Drama production "South Pacific" would be held
on June 3 and 4 . Show dates wi~l be July 31 through August 3, 1997.
Commission member Lindsey spoke in regards to grant opportunities.
Leonard and Gerlick left at 7:00pm.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:07pm. ,
