CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of July 7, 2010
CALL TO ORDER
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Conunission was called
to order at 5:49pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the Civic Center City Council Conference
Room .

REVIEW OF AGENDA
There were no changes to the agenda.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of April
7, 2010. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented.

NEW BUSINESS
A lternate Member Tamara Emmanuel informed the commission that she will be overseeing the
Cultural Arts Commission booth at Funfest. Commission Member Bartunek told Emmanuel
that she would help her . Emmanuel explained that the art activity for the booth wi ll be
stickers .
VI. OLD BUSINESS
Commission Members Schnitzer and Enger gave an update on the community garden.
Schnitze r reported that the community garden now has a shed and will soon be getting a
message board . Bertoluzzi asked in regard to ai1work at the garden. Schnitzer explained now
is not the time to install a11work with it being the first year and not knowing where everything
is going to go. Enger repo11ed that they are tying in artwork with the pergola and gates .
Discussion turned to an update on an Englewood arts festival. MOA Representati ve Tim
Vacca rep011ed that the committee has decided on the name "Englewood Art Fest".
Commission Member Ba11Unek stated that the first event will be in September 2011.
Discussion followed regarding plans for a community forum on September 201h at 7pm.
Emmanuel aske d if event will only involve painting and music . Vacca explained that it will
encompass all of the ai1s . Vacca stated that Bartunek is working on a logo for the event and he
is working on a business plan and once that is more defined they will know what they need to
ask for. Discussion followed.
VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS
There was no update for Publi c A11 .
Bertoluzzi reported that the Englewood Arts concert schedule for next year ha s been finalized.
Bertoluzzi announced that Englewood Arts presented a check in the amount of $7 ,000 to City
Council in suppo11 of the Summer Drama Program .
Commission members were g iven an update on the June Parks and Recreation Commission
meeting.
VIII . UPC OMING EVENTS
Vacca gave an update on the PLACE community forum that was held in June . Vacca repo11ed
that a preliminary feasibility evaluation has been completed and MOA plans to move forward
with its plans for PLACE. Vacca noted that PLACE plans to be back out in August to look
more at the sites.
IX. DIRECTO R'S CHOICE

X. COMMISSI ON lVIEM BERS CH OI CE

Recreation Manager Gary Hultberg informed the Commission of some grant oppo11Unities that
have become available to the City. Hultberg explained that $5.2 million in federal stimulus
money is being passed clown through Health and Human services in grants for healthy changes
in the environment. Hultberg reported that of the four letters of intent that the City submitted,
three were approved: updated bicycle master plan , improved pedestrian mo ve ment on
Broadway and new community gardens . In regard to the community gardens , Hultberg told the
Commission that the Depat1ment , in a pa11nership with Englewood Schools , is looking at
putting in a community garden at the Charles Hay World School and Clayton Elementary
School where each sc hool can use the garden as pa11 of the curriculum in addition to having •
some plots available to the community. Commission members were told that each grant has a
maximum amount of S 150 ,000 and does not require matching funds.
Benoluzzi thanked everyone for the cards and plant he received during his recent illness .
