CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of November 3, 2010
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was
called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the Civic Center City Council
Conference Room.

• II. REVIEW OF AGENDA

Bertoluzzi informed the Commission that James Wallace with David Taylor Dance Theatre
will be present to discuss 2010 and 2011 performances.
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of
October 6, 2010. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented.
IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS
Bertoluzzi introduced James Wallace.
V. NEW BUSINESS
Discussion was turned over to Mr. Wallace. Mr. Wallace distributed information on 2010
and 2011 performances for David Taylor Dance Theatre to include four performances for
2010 and three for 2011. Mr. Wallace told the Commis sion that the shows are for all ages
and are free . Discussion followed. Commission members thanked Mr. Wallace. Mr.
Wallace left.
City Council Liaison Jill Wilson gav e an update on the 2011 budget. Wilson reported that
year to date sales tax is up .89 percent. Wilson explained that the 2011 budget has been
voted on and approved but that it can always be changed if things get better. Commission
Member Kenney asked how often the budget is reviewed. Wilson replied monthly at Study
Sessions.
In regard to Funfest and the $2,500 that was required to keep it for next year, Wilson
informed the Commission that an Englewood resident has come forward and donated the
$2 ,500 anonymously which will allow the Department to run the event in 2011. Wilson
stated that the donation is very generous and that it is always nice to get support.
Commission members were excited and thankful to hear about the donation.
Bertoluzzi commented in regard to the Top 50 Artist Reception that was held on
Wednesday, October 2ih and what a nice ceremony and presentation it was. Bertoluzzi
stated that Tim Vacca and LeighAnn Hoffhines did a great job getting the artwork up and
that everyone did a great job selecting the artwork for the calendar.
VI. OLD BUSINESS
Discussion turned to an update on the community garden. Commission Member Schnitzer
told the Commission that the garden is being put to bed and that quite a few gardeners will
be returning next year. Schnitzer reported that there was a year-end meeting where thank
you notes were written to donors and sign-up for gardeners wanting to put in work that still
remains on the garden . Schnitzer commented that it was a very good season.
Bertoluzzi asked if there were any suggestions or sharing of ideas for next year's garden;
noting that it is always an on-going process . Schnitzer stated that art will be worked on for
next year. Bertoluzzi asked if all of the gardeners had successful gardens. Schnitzer

reported that there was more produce that expected, adding that more than 140 lbs. of •
produce was given to the food bank. Wilson stated that everyone participated and everyone
was excited to be a part of the community garden; noting that it was real teamwork.
Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager, informed the Commission that the Department
applied for and received a grant for two more community gardens , one at Clayton and the
other at Charles Hay, which will be able to take the overflow from this garden. Wilson
stated that it will spread the community gardens throughout the City. Stewart asked if
some of the produce from the two new gardens will also be donated to food banks.
Hultberg replied yes, explaining that two plots at each of the gardens have been dedicated
for food bank in addition to what people donate. Hultberg stated that because the gardens
will be located on school property, the gardens will be done in cooperation with the School
District. Hultberg explained that in addition , they will be contracting with Denver Urban
Gardens to plan the gardens.
In regard to the Englewood Art Fest, MOA Representative reported that due to man power
and guidance concerns, the Exploratory Committee is recommending that it is best to table
the proposed event at this time. Vacca stated that the Exploratory Committee also
recommends that in order to have a successful event, the program be placed back into a city
department as a program where it can be given proper guidance and support. Discussion
followed in regard to which department would take on the event.
A motion was made by Commission Member Stewart and seconded by
Commission Member Bartunek to accept the recommendation by the
Englewood Art Fest Exploratory Committee as submitted. •

VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS
Schnitzer gave a report on the October Parks and Recreation Commission meeting that
included the Malley Senior Recreation Center receiving the Nu-Step Pinnacle Award.
Hultberg explained to the Commission that the award is the premier award for Senior
Centers and is given for excellence in senior fitness and wellness .

Discussion followed regarding upcoming events including the next Englewood Arts
concert Mo z art, "Thi s I B eli eve -Mo z art's Credo " and the Annual Holiday Bazaar at
Malley. Vacca distributed information on the upcoming Hudson Holidays.
DIRECTOR'S CHO ICE
Hultberg informed the Commission that last week was the Annual Parks and Recreation 's
Amateur Art Show. Hultberg stated that in the past, the Commission has used money from
the one percent art fund to purchase one of the pieces chosen as a People's Choice.
Hultberg stated that the first place has already been purchased but second and third place
are still available. Commission members viewed and discussed whether there was any
interest to purchase one of the pieces. Due to there not being prices on the two art pieces , it
was decided that Hultberg would find out the prices and bring them back to the December
meeting for further discussion whether to purchase one of the pieces.
It was also noted that money from the one percent art fund could be used to purchase a
piece of art for the community garden .
X. COMMISSION MEMBERS CHOICE
Vacca reported that Dream Tree, also known as the Wal-Mart Art Wall has been restored.
Stewart informed the Commission that this week is Denver Arts Week. Discussion
followed .
In regard to the candlelight walk , Kenney reported that she has spoken to City Council
Member Randy Penn who is also involved with the Chamber and Mr. Penn had told her
that he wanted to talk to her regarding the candlelight walk. Kenney reported that the event
will be on December 4th at 5pm .
Hultberg informed the Commission that the reason James Wallace was at tonight's meeting
is because David Taylor Dance Theatre is required by contract to perform six free
performances per year and needs to come to the Commission for approval.

Bertoluzzi thanked Wilson for all of the work she has done on City Council with the
budget. Bertoluzzi told Wilson that it required a lot of patience and perseverance and that
she did a great job.
