Minutes of January 6, 2010
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to
order at 5:46pm by Director Black at the Civic Center City Council Conference Room.

There were no changes to the agenda.
III. APPROVAL O F MINUTES
Due to there not being a quorum, the minutes of December 2, 2009 would be approved at the
February meeting.
IV. INTRODUCTI O N OF GUESTS
There were no guests present.
V. NE\V BUSINESS
Commission member Kenney told commission members about a recent event that she had
attended in Golden consisting of a candlelight walk through a common area where people
gathered to sing Christmas carols. Kenney stated that she thought that it would something new
and creative that the City could do. City Council Liaison Wilson suggested that it could be done
in conjunction with the Holiday Tree Lighting. Discussion followed . Black explained that the
City Manager's Office coordinates the event and that he would bring up the idea to Deputy City
Manager Mike Flaherty .
Kenney asked if there were any outdoor ice skating facilities. Black replied no; explaining that
the City looked at it when the City was planning the CityCenter development but decided not to
because of the cost of maintaining the facility and liabili ty. Hultberg added that one of the b iggest
costs to an outdoor ice skating facility in Colorado is the cost of providing shade due to Colorado
having so many days of sun.
Black informed the Commission that Jim Doty, Olga Wolosyn 's husband, is holding an open
house/going away party this Saturday from l-8pm before he moves to California to be closer to his
son and grandchildren. Commission members were told that at the Open House, Jim will be selling
some of Olga's artwork. Black asked the Commission ifthere was any interest in using money from
the One Percent Art Fund to purchase a piece of Olga 's artwork to display in Hampden Hall.
With the arrival of Commission Member Bartunek and there now being a quorum,
A motion was made by Commission Member Schnitzer and seconded by Commission
Member Kenney in support of the Cultural Arts Commission using money from the
one percent art fund to purchase a piece Olga's artwork to display in Hampden Hall.

VI. OLD BUSINESS
Di scussion turned to an update on the Community Garden. Schnitzer reported that the Steering
Comminee, Department staff and Denver Urban Gardens representative Michael Buchaneau will be
meeting with City Council on January 19 th to gi v e an update on the community garden project.
Schnitzer told the Commission that they have received some funding through grants .
In regard to the meeting with City Council , Black repo11ed that the y will be asking City Council to
use $10 ,000 to $15 ,000 from the Open Space Funds for the development of the community garden.
Di scussion followed .
A motion \vas made by Commission Member Schnitzer and seconded by Commission
Member Bartunek in support of using Open Space Funds for the development of the
community garden.

Motion Carried
Wilson suggested emailing commission members about the meeting with City Council and inviting
them to the meeting if interested.
VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS
Discussion turned to Committee Reports and Public Art. Recreation Manager Gary Hultberg
informed the Commission that signage for the Cone Flowers has been defaced . Hultberg
explained that there is a couple of options: replace the signage at a cost of $200 .00, take down the

signage and not replace it or relocate the Cone Flowers. Schnitzer asked what the chance was that •
it would be vandalized again . Black and Hultberg replied that it would probably happen again due
to the current location of the flowers; adding that the cost to relocate the flowers would cost more
than $200 .00. Schnitzer asked Hultberg what his recommendation would be . Hultberg explained

that the signage does need to be taken down and if the Commission decided not to replace the
signage then it would be the only art that would not have any signage. Hultberg went on to
explain that money is a va ilable to replace the signage because when the art is purchased from the
One Percent Art Fund, ten percent of the purchase cost is set aside for maintenance. Discussion
followed in regard to preventative measures to protect the signs including a Plexiglas cover.
Hultberg told the Commission that he would suggest it replace the sign and if the problem
reoccurs then they can research ways to protect the sign. Black asked if this is the first sign that
has had to be replaced . Hultberg replied that it is the first for the Department but that he is not
sure if Community Development has had to replace any signs . Discussion followed .
Bertoluzzi announced the upcoming Englewood Arts concert Th e Colorado Sy mphony Winds in
Concert on Saturday, January 23 rd at 2 :00pm in Hampden Hall. Discussion followed regarding
the Englewood Arts Christmas concert and the Museum of Arts Hudson Holidays.
Schnitzer stated that the December Parks and Recreation Commission was cancelled so there is no
update.
VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS
Youth Commission Member BatTagan announced an upcoming event at the hi gh school, "Poetry
Slam" on January 22, 2010 that will include poetry and music .

Wilson announced that Eng lewood Schools Superintendent Sean McDaniel has resigned effective
June 1, 2010 .
Youth Commission Member BatTagan asked what needed to be done in order to promote an
Englewood High School event within the City of Englewood. Black told BatTagan that for the
Library, he would need to speak to Director Hank Long and if he could get some posters to either
himself or Hultberg , they would get them hung in the Parks and Recreation and Civic Center
facilities.
Schnitzer spoke in regard to the Art Shuttle and it going to a new vendor. Schnitzer stated that she
was pleased to hear that art will still be displayed on the buses .
