CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of March 3, 2010 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5 :45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the Civic Center City Council Conference Room. Present: Absent: Also Present: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Karen Kenney, Commission Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member (arrived at 5 :49pm) Nathan Barragan, Youth Commission Member Tamara Emmanuel , Alternate Member Jill Wilson, City Council Liaison Jerrell Black, ex officio Janet Moore, Vice Chairperson Jennifer Enger, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird , Englewood Schools Liaison Kate Dulaney, Englewood Schools Liaison Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Tim Vacca , Museum of Outdoor Arts Representative REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes to the agenda. III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of February 3, 2010. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS There were no guests present. V. NEW BUSINESS VI. There were no items for New Business. OLD BUSINESS Discussion turned to an update on the community garden. City Council Liaison Jill Wilson reported that a community meeting was held last night and there were approximately fifty people in attendance . Wilson stated that Denver Urban Gardens Representative Michael Buchenau, Director Black and Manager of Open Space Dave Lee all spoke and Commission Members Enger and Schnitzer answered questions . Wilson explained that everyone in attendance was in support of the community garden and included all ages in addition to some scout groups . Wilson told the Commission that it shows where the community is at and where it wants to go. Black agreed, noting that it was a huge step in the community garden. Black recognized Schnitzer, Enger, Stewart and Wilson for the huge amount of effort they all contributed in getting the garden started . VII. COMM ITTEE REPO RTS In regard to discussion at last month's meeting on identification for artwork in Hampden Hall, Hultberg informed the Commission that he spoke to Tim Vacca with MOA to see what the Museum did to identify artwork . Hultberg showed commission members what MOA uses and asked commission members if they would be okay with using the same method . Commission members concurred. Hultberg explained that it will not take off any paint when it is removed and noted that all of the artwork will have identification. Bartunek reported that next week she will be working with Carol McGuigan on the artwork for the Hampden Hall Artwall. Bertoluzzi asked Bartunek if they expect the artwork to be up by March 13th. Bartunek replied yes. Bertoluzzi asked where Olga's artwork will be going. Bartunek stated that they will decide next week unless someone has a suggestion. Hultberg stated that there has been some discussion in having the smaller piece hang in the entry way near Olga's photo . Discussion followed. Wilson asked if anyone knows where the piece City Council bought is going . Black stated no but that he would follow-up . Discussion turned to an update on Englewood Arts . Bertoluzzi spoke in regard to an issue with the current lighting in Hampden Hall and how they are looking at a way to refine it for musical performances. Bertoluzzi reported he has brought in a lighting professional from the Colorado Symphony who has submitted a proposal. VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS Bertoluzzi announced the upcoming Englewood Arts concert "Viva La Viola !" on March 13t h at 2pm in Hampden Hall. Youth Member Barragan told the Commission of the upcoming Englewood High School Musical "Annie get your Gun" on Friday, March 5th and Saturday , March 6th . Commission members were informed of the Department of Parks and Recreation's Night of the Stars Talent Show on Friday, March I th at 6pm in Hampden Hall. Bertoluzzi asked how many performers there are at the event. Hultberg replied approximately twenty ; noting that ninety percent of the performers are Englewood residents. Hultberg stated that the event is a program that Jeni Rulon, Youth Administrator, started several years ago that has now grown into a state-wide competition. Hultberg also reported that a couple of years ago the program won a state award for programming. IX. DIRECT OR'S CHOICE Black welcomed Stewart back and told her that he hopes she is feeling better. Commission members also welcomed Stewart back. X. COMM ISSI ON MEMBERS CHOI CE Commission Member Kenney asked the Commission if there was any interest for the Commission to • • buy something for the community garden . Bertoluzzi told Kenney that the Commission has already • discussed it and has decided that it would buy some artwork. Black told the Commission that he would encourage the group to do something but that his concern is that there is not enough time to • • • buy something and have it in place by May 1st. Discussion followed in regard to possible artwork for the garden . Barragan told the Commission that the Poetry Slam that was held in January went well and that there are plans for another one in April. Vacca reported that he recently attended the Art Advocacy Day at the Capital where the towns of Creed and Telluride received the Governor's Art Award. Vacca discussed with commission members having someone from the Board nominate the City of Englewood for the award. Hultberg stated that Englewood Arts nominated the City of Englewood a few years ago. Discussion followed. Vacca reported that the Museum will be taking down Cabinet of Curiosities next week and preparing for the next show Elem ent House architec ture that will be opening on April 10th . Wilson recognized parks and recreation staff and Schnitzer, Enger and Stewart for a fantastic job and all of the work they have put into the community garden project. Wilson talked about how excited she is about the whole project. XI. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 6 :22pm. I sl D. Severa Recording Secretary
