HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-02-04 CAC MINUTESCity of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of February 4, 1998 The regularly scheduled meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Wolosyn at the Englewood Recreation Center, Conference Room. Members Present: Members Absent: Wolosyn, Spangenberg, Krueger, Warner, Tomasso, Peterson LaPorta Kreiger, Lindsey, Gootee, Black ex officio Also present: Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Alex Habenicht, City Council Liaison Mike Heberling, Englewood High School Student and Youth Member to Public Library Board Chairperson Wolosyn asked if there were any changes or additions to the minutes of December 3, 1997. A correction was made regarding the arrival time of Public Library Liaison O'Leary. O'Leary arrived at 5:50pm, not 6:50pm. A motion was made and seconded that the minutes be approved as presented. The motion passed 5-0 . Recreation Manager Hultberg updated Commission members on the selection of an architect for Cinderella City/Foley's building . Seven architects were interviewed by City of Englewood staff. The selection has been narrowed down to one architect. Discussion has been held between the City of Englewood e and the architect regarding renegotiation of price. Response from staff is that they were impressed by the qualifications and experience of the applicants. Habenicht stated she had heard the same. Chairperson Wolosyn asked if it would be possible for the Cultural Arts Commission to tour the Foley's building. Hultberg would make the arrangements. Youth Commission member Peterson arrived at 5 :50pm. Peterson introduced her guest, Mike Heberling, Englewood High School student and youth member to the Englewood Public Library Board. In reference to last month's agenda item to establish a Committee of the Whole for Art in Public Places , Chairperson Wolosyn suggested that the Commission move forward with that action since a quorum was now present. A motion was made by Vice Chairperson Spangenberg and seconded by Commission member Tomasso that a Committee of the Whole be established for the Art in Public Places . The motion passed 5-0 . Council liaison Habenicht asked that since the motion was for Committee of the Whole, the liaisons also be included as voting members. Commission members agreed with Habenicht. Hultberg spoke in reference to the Art in Public Places resolution. Hultberg explained that one percent of all capital fund projects will be set aside for art in public places beginning in 1999. Hultberg felt it would be appropriate if the Cultural Arts Commission take the lead in that project. Hultberg also felt it was important to have a plan in effect prior to the start of 1999. Chairperson Wolosyn reported on the Plaza Statue. Wolosyn was hoping that a statue be in place by the beginning of the EDDA summer concert series. No progress has been made regarding liability. Commission members discussed opportunities for acquiring a piece of art. Habenicht and Wolosyn will try to meet with the City Attorney to discuss issues related to public art . In regards to a suggestion made by Habenicht at the January meeting, Commission member Warner asked if there has been any progress on a working calendar for the Cultural Arts Commission Wolosyn stated 9 she would have one by the March meeting. Commission members were updated on RTD Station. There has been no new progress. Wolosyn was told that it would not be possible to go through RTD for SCFD funding. Application for funding would need to be done through the City of Englewood, Cultural Arts Division. Wolosyn will also be pursuing other venues for funding besides just SCFD. Spangenberg reported on the Convening Committee and Project 2003/Cultural Corridor. Spangenberg thought it would be less confusing if the name of the Convening Committee be changed to Centennial Celebration . There has been no action on the celebration. In reference to Project 2003/Cultural Corridor, Spangenberg reported that the committee is looking at a 5 year plan so that a cultural corridor will be in place for the centennial celebration. It was felt that there were plenty of venues for opportunities for the cultural corridor and that the feasibility study and cultural corridor could be linked. Spangenberg continued discussion on the Cultural Corridor, reporting that she was still caring for the plants for the Englewood Depot, which were donated by Englewood Garden Center when it closed. Spangenberg stated that the feasibility study questionnaire is being reviewed. A request was made for names and addresses for those whom it would be beneficial to have complete the questionnaire. The Commission discussed usage, rent and cost associated with a cultural center. Hultberg distributed Recreation Division 's list of items for consideration as possible components of a new City Hall facility including a 200 seat theater , rehearsal room(s), dance/multi-purpose room, daycare facility, storage and commons area. Commission member Krueger left at 6:3 lpm. Spangenberg distributed copies of the questionnaire. It is hoped the questionnaire can be mailed out as soon as possible. Hultberg requested that the Parks and Recreation Department review the questionnaire prior to being mailed out. Youth member Peterson spoke in regards to the camping trip for the Englewood High School Environmental Club planned for March. In support of the project, Peterson asked for a donation from the Cultural Arts Commission. Commission members discussed donating towards the outing. Wolosyn also suggested the club speak to the Public Library Board concerning a donation. Habenicht announced SCFD will be celebrating their 10th anniversary. In honor of the celebration, the organization is asking for participation from municipalities in order to make it a metro-wide celebration. Recreation Manager Hultberg reported there is a SCFD grant workshop on February 19, 1998. Hultberg announced the Department of Parks and Recreation is planning a new special event, "Olde e Tyme Fair''. The event would be held in August at the Miller Field and would include carnival games, music , food, etc.. Hultberg asked for references for performers, musicians, etc. that could perform at such an event. Habenicht suggested pulling the event in with the 2003 Celebration. Spangenberg noted that the Summer of Concert series has opportunities available for local performers e and musicians for intermissions. Interested parties should contact Harold Celva with EDDA. Youth Member Peterson announced she would be performing in an upcoming Englewood High School production called The New Boyfriend. Peterson asked if the Cultural Arts Commission would be interested in purchasing an ad for the program. A motion was made by Vice-Chairman Spangenberg and seconded by Commission member Tomasso to purchase an ad in support of the Englewood High School Drama Department and the production The New Boyfriend.
