Cultural Arts Commission
Minutes of April 1, 1998
The regularly scheduled meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was
called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Wolosyn at the Englewood Recreation Center, Conference
Room.

Chairperson Wolosyn asked if there were any changes or additions to the minutes of March 4,
1998. There were none. A motion was made and seconded that the minutes be approved as presented.
The motion passed unanimously .
Agenda moved on to new business. Chairman Wolosyn reported Vice -Chairman Spangenberg
had suggested the Cultural Arts Commission do something in honor of EDDA 's 10th anniversary of its
Summer Concerts Series. A proclamation was suggested.
Vice Chairman Spangenberg and Commission member LaPorta Kreiger arrived at 5:48pm .
Spangenberg distributed an example of the proclamation .
A motion was made by Vice-Chairman Spangenberg and seconded by Commission member
LaPorta Kreiger that the Cultural Arts Commission issue a proclamation honoring the 10th Anniversary
of the EDDA Summer Concert Series. The proclamation would be presented at the June 11, 1998
concert, the first concert of the season. The motion passed unanimously.
A motion was made by Vice Chairman Spangenberg and seconded by Commission member
Krueger to recommend that the Englewood City Council also issue a proclamation honoring the 1 oth
Anniversary of the EDDA Summer Concert Series. It was recommended that the Mayor of the City of
Englewood present the proclamation at the first concert of the season. The motion passed 6-1 with
Commission member Tomasso opposed.
In regards to the issue of using the Foley 's building as part of the Cinderella City development,
Council liaison Habenicht announced that City Council gave the developer the go-ahead to include the
Foley 's building in the planning and development. Skip Miller will be making a presentation to Council
on May 11 , 1998 .
Commission members discussed the purchase of the Gothic theater. It was explained that the
former owner has until mid-May to redeem possession of the property .
Di sc us sion moved on to reports of standing and special committees. Chairperson Wolosyn
announced that Alice Lee Main with the City of Aurora is not able to attend a regularly scheduled
Cultural Arts Commission meeting. Ms . Main gave Chairperson Wolosyn some information pertaining
to the City of Aurora's Public Art Plan. Information was distributed to Commission members. It was
decided that an Art in Public Places Standing Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 8,
1998, at 5:45pm at the Englewood Recreation Center. Commission also discussed a date to meet with
Ms. Main.
Chairperson Wolosyn reported on progress with the RTD Light Rail Station. Black stated that
the $7 ,500 for the station art contest has been appropriated in the 1998 budget. Wolosyn distributed the
revised Call for Entries .
Discussion moved on to the Plaza Statue. Wolosyn spoke in regards to the liability release form
that was sent out to Commission members in the April packet. Wolosyn suggested the 10 % sale of art
be directed back to the Cultural Arts Commission, and not the City of Englewood as stated.
Commission members were reminded that EDDA may be a possible source for grants and funding
assistance. Discussion ensued regarding insurance and liability of public art.
Commission members developed a working calendar for 1998 . The calendar will be updated
monthly.
Youth Commission member Peterson discussed her Environment Club trip. Peterson reported
that the trip has been rescheduled for May 2, 1998. Discussion followed.
Commission member Krueger left the meeting at 6:39pm.
Commission member Warner left the meeting at 6:44pm .
Discussion moved on to Special Committees reports. Vice Chairperson Spangenberg stated
that there has been no action regarding the Centennial Celebration. Spangenberg reported that a final
draft would be available next week concerning the Feasibility Study.
Commission member Tomasso announced that the Forney Transportation Museum is looking at
selling and relocating its current facility. Tomasso suggested the General Iron site as a possible location
due to its rail history .
A motion was made by Vice-Chairman Spangenberg and seconded by Commission member
LaPorta Kreiger that the Cultural Arts Commission support Commission member Tomasso, in
cooperation with the Department of Neighborhood and Business Development, to pursue the possible
relocation of the Forney Transportation Museum to the City of Englewood, General Iron site. The
motion passed unanimously.
Council Member Habenicht distributed information regarding a National Conference in June on
the Value of Arts. Commission members discussed the possibility of sending member(s) to the
conference. Black would look into the possibility .
Vice-Chairman Spangenberg discussed the Internet and the Commission having a link from A to
Zoo.

Chairman Wolosyn announced she had been interviewed by Sonya from the Englewood Herald .
The meeting was adjourned at 7 : 12pm .
