HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-06-03 CAC MINUTES•' • • • City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of June 3, 1998 The regularly scheduled meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Wolosyn at the Englewood Recreation Center, Conference Room. Members Present: Members Absent: Also present: Wolosyn, Krueger, Warner, Tomasso, LaPorta, Lindsey Spangenberg, Peterson, Gootee, Black, ex oficio Gary Hultberg, Manager of Recreation Alex Habenicht, City Council Liaison Shannon O'Leary, Englewood Public Library Liaison Chairperson Wolosyn asked if there were any changes or additions to the minutes of May 5, 1998 . There were none. A motion was made that the minutes be approved as presented. The motion passed unanimously . Council member Habenicht announced that the City Council Study Session on June 15, 1998, would include discussion with the Museum of Outdoor Art. Commission members were welcome to attend. Chairperson Wolosyn reported that Harold Celva from EDDA had forwarded an invitation to the Cultural Arts Commission to an art presentation regarding youth and art. Commission member Warner was possibly interested in attending. Commission member Lindsey arrived at 5:50pm. Discussion moved on to Committee reports and Art in Public Places . Chairperson Wolosyn reported on RTD Art at the Station. Black, Hultberg and Wolosyn had met with Pauletta Puncerelli, Public Information Officer with the City of Englewood. Puncerelli will be helping with the publicity of the project. A blueprint of the windscreen was distributed. Wolosyn moved discussion on to Plaza Statue. Minutes from the May 19, 1998, Art in Public Places Special Meeting were distributed. A motion was made by Commission member Krueger and seconded by Commission member LaPorta to ratify the recommendation made by the Art in Public Places Standing Committee regarding the duration of exhibiting a piece of art. Habenicht asked for discussion . Habenicht noted that Black had suggested that at the end of the four month period, the piece of art on exhibition could be reconsidered for another rotation. Commission member Tomasso asked in regards to the cost of moving the pieces of art. It was reported that it was the artists ' responsibility to place the piece of art on the pedestal. After discussion, the motion passed unanimously. A decision will be made in September for the next rotation of a piece of art. Hultberg, Manager of Recreation, announced that Joe Riche had signed the agreement for his piece of art to be displayed at the plaza . The statement concerning the artist assuming liability was struck through. Hultberg reported that the piece was put in place on Tuesday. Vandalism occurred to the piece on Tuesday evening . Riche will be making some changes. T he piece is located east of the Plaza along the dry creek path. Hultberg and Black had discussed making some changes to the agreement. Changes include that if vandalism occurs to the piece of art, or if it is felt the piece of art is dangerous and unsightly and not taken care of in a timely manner, the City of Englewood has the right to remove the piece of art. Commission members discussed the second recommendation from the Art in Public Places Standing Committee regarding the approval of a piece of art for the pedestal at the Plaza. A motion was made by Commission member Krueger and seconded by Commission member LaPorta to accept the recommendation of four members to review the piece of art at the Museum of Outdoor Art, Sampson Park. The motion passed unanimously. Hultberg updated Commission members on the Child of Peace piece of art to be placed on the pedestal at the Plaza . Hultberg explained the process in preparing it for display . Hultberg stated that the parks budget will cover the expense. Photos of the piece were distributed . Commission members were informed that LaPorta had spoken to City Council at the June 1, 1998 meeting in regards to the proclamation honoring EDDA's 10th Anniversary. Commission member Tomasso requested a response from Black and Hultberg regarding the Riche piece of art. It was reported that the Cultural Arts Commission would be given time to speak before the June 11 th EDDA summer concert . LaPorta would speak . Cultural Arts Commission members would also be in attendance to help present the proclamation honoring EDDA's 10th Anniversary. Commission members were updated on the Centennial Celebration and Cultural Corridor. Tomasso reported that the Forney Transportation Museum had purchased a building on Brighton Boulevard. Habenicht explained that the Feasibility Study is near completion . Wolosyn announced that Youth Member Peterson 's trip did not take place . In regards to inviting a member of the Englewood Historical Society to the Cultural Arts Commission, LaPorta reported that she had spoken to a member of the Historical Society. It will be discussed at the next meeting. Hultberg stated that he was looking forward to the Americans for Arts Conference on June 5-7th . Hultberg announced that the July meeting would be on the pool patio with a bar-b-que. Habenicht began discussion regarding the inventory of art in the City of Englewood facilities. It was suggested that staff from the Department of Parks and Recreation take the lead in the process. A motion was made by Commission member Tomasso and seconded by Commission member Krueger to present a proposal to the City of Englewood requesting an inventory be conducted on all art currently • • • • • • owned in City of Englewood facilities. The inventory would include locations and values of the art. The motion passed unanimously. Habenicht suggested that a motion be made in the near future that requests City Council to amend the ordinance creating the Cultural Arts Commission to include both a member from the Englewood Public Library and the Parks and Recreation Commission. Krueger suggested that a motion be made recommending that City Council remove the sunset provision from the ordinance creating the Cultural Arts Commission. A motion was made by Commission member Krueger and seconded by Chairperson Wolosyn asking City Council to remove the Sunset Provision from Ordinance 5, Series of 1996. The motion passed unanimously. Commission member Krueger left the meeting at 6:40pm. Discussion followed regarding working with youth and graffiti. Englewood Public Library Liaison O'Leary announced the Friends of the Library Book Sale would be June 6-ih. Tomasso suggested a file be kept on information received from other municipalities, organizations, artists, etc. The meeting was adjourned at 6:54pm . Deborah A. Severa, Recording Secretary
