Cultural Arts Commission
Minutes of July 1, 1998 ·--
The regularly scheduled meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was
called to order at 5:56pm by Chairperson Wolosyn at the Englewood Recreation Center, pool patio.

Chairperson Wolosyn asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes of June 3,
1998. There were none. A motion was made that the minutes be approved as presented. The motion
passed unanimously.
Black gave a brief update on the Museum of Outdoor Arts. Black reported that City Council
has given the okay to move forward with the Museum of Outdoor Art agreement. Commission members
were told that the agreement would be brought back to them for their review before going back to City
Council. Black stated that any concerns regarding the agreement would be addressed at that time. A
cost benefit analysis is being conducted regarding MOA coming to the City of Englewood and the
Cinderella City site.
Sonya Elingboe, writer for the Englewood Herald, arrived at 5:59pm.
Wolosyn stated she had received a letter from Commission member Tomasso regarding his
concerns with the agreement. Black addressed Tomasso's concerns.
Black spoke in regards to the 1 % allocation of capital projects.
Discussion moved forward to the feasibility study. It was suggested that the feasibility study be
put on hold for 30-60 days. Commission member LaPorta disagreed. Discussion followed. Habenicht
suggested a meeting to discuss the feasibility study. Chris Wineman and Gully Sanford would be
invited to the meeting.
City Manager Gary Sears arrived at 6:25pm. Commission members introduced themselves.
Discussion moved on to the RTD Art at the Station. The Call for Entries was discussed.
Recreation Manager Hultberg announced that he has received over 75 calls.
Commission member Krueger left the meeting at 6:3 lpm .
Chairperson Wolosyn reported on Statue at the Plaza. Commission would discuss the next
placement of art at the August meeting.
Discussion moved on to procedure. Commission members discussed the inventory of art at City
of Englewood facilities. The inventory would also include possible locations for new art. City
Manager Sears suggested tying in the process in conjunction with the budget. An Art in Public Places ·-
meeting was scheduled for Tuesday , July 22, 1998, at the LaPorta Art Gallery.
Discussion moved on to Special Committee reports. Habenicht stated that there has been no
action regarding the Centennial Celebration. Habenicht discussed tying the celebration in with other
City of Englewood events. In regards to the Cultural Corridor, Habenicht reported that she would like
to see it tied in with the Museum of Outdoor Arts.
Commission members discussed the Englewood Depot. City Manager Sears stated that a
committee has been fo;med to discuss the future of the Depot. Sears reported that ownership has been
transferred so that it could be revitalized.
Commission member O'Leary left the meeting at 7:00pm.
Commission members spoke in regards to the American for Arts Conference recently attended
by Commission members Wolosyn, LaPorta, Habenicht and Hultberg.
Black informed Commission members that murals were recently painted on the cement walls at
Rotolo Park and SW Greenbelt. It is the hoped that the murals will help control the graffiti problem at
the park. An article regarding the murals was distributed.
Hultberg announced that the Summer Playground participants have been involved with an art
project. The participants have been painting murals on 3 ' x 3' wood panels. The panels will be
displayed at the Plaza for one month during the Summer Concerts and then be displayed at Miller Field
during the Olde Tyme Fair. The theme for the murals was "Carnivals".
Hultberg announced that the Department has submitted an application for the Starburst Award
for the relocation of the Belleview Park missile.
Youth member Mike Heberling talked of public art at the Cinderella City site. City Manager
Sears reported that Monday night 's meeting would include discussion with the architect It was
suggested that some of the Cultural Art Commission members attend the meeting .
Sears expressed his recognition to the Cultural Arts Commission.
Black indicated that he would invite the Cinderella City architect and planning team to a
Cultural Arts Commission meeting to discuss ideas and to allow an opportunity for Commission
members to provide their input.
Black announced the Romans Park dedication would be Saturday , July 11, 1998 at Romans
Park . Commission members would be receiving invitations.
Black reported that he would be attending the National Recreation and Parks Association
(NRPA) Congress in Miami Beach in September. Black said that he would be attending a full day
session devoted to the arts.
