CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of July 1, 2009 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5 :59 pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the Civic Cente r City Council Conference Room . Present: Absent: Eric Berto lu zzi, Chairperson Janet Moore , Vice Chairperson Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Jennifer Enger, Commission Member Jerrell Black, ex officio Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Jill Wilson , C ity Council Liaison Kate Dul aney, Englewood Schools Liaison Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood Schools Liaison II. REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes to the agenda . • III. AP PROV AL OF MIN UTES • Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of June 3 , 2009. Commission Member Enger noted that she was shown as being present when she was absent. Commission Member Bartunek spoke in regard to the Artabout Englewood fee for artists and if the fee quoted in the minutes was correct. Commission members were told that the fee would be verified with Community Development and corrected if required. The minutes were approved as amended. IV. I NT ROD UC TION OF GUESTS There were no guests present. V. NEW BUSINESS VI. There was no new business . OLD BUSINESS Discussion turned to the Wal-Ma11 A..11 Wall. Be11olu zz i reported that in a conversation with Mr. Siler, the artist, Mr. Siler commented in regard to how dull the piece of art looks and stated that he would be willing to buy some yellow paint and paint the wall fo r $1,000. Ber1 oluzzi told the Commission that he thinks Mr. Siler understands that he needs to be proactive . Commission members discussed mo ving the artwork to the Community Garden . Bl ack exp lained that it would be a process and suggested that the Commission wait a few years to give time for the Garden to get in place. In regard to Mr. Siler 's last proposal to restore the A..11 Wall for $7,000, Bl ack reported that a new program request for the work will be s ubmitted in the 20 10 budget but that he doubt s the $7,000 will be funded. Black stated that it would be easier to find $1,000 if Nlr. Siler is willing to paint the wall for that price. Bertoluzzi asked Black if he has attended any City Council meetings where City Council has discussed the Land Bank. Black told Ber1oluzzi that it was discussed at one meeting but that a decision was not made. Black explained that it is a policy issue which will need to be discussed at the Budget Workshop. Discussion followed . Commission Member Enger gave an update on the Community Garden. Enger repor1ed that Planning and Zoning unanimously approved the Condition Use Permit for the Community Garden at the Depot property . Enger repor1ed that the Planning and Zoning Commission seem to be really excited with the project. Enger told the Commission that they are now finalizing the organization of the Steering Committee, putting volunteers in different committees, getting a timeline and organizing fundraising. Enger reported that they are planning to have a table at Funfest in addition to the Farmers Market. Bertoluzzi asked if a policy has been developed in regard to how one gets a garden plot. Enger told Bertoluzzi that there will be an application process that they are cutTently working on. In regard to the construction of the garden plots, Enger explained that they are working with the boy scouts to build the plots as Eagle Scout projects . Discussion followed . Discussion turned to an update on the Artabout Englewood event scheduled for Saturday, August I 51 . Commission Member Bartunek noted that the deadline for entries has been extended. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS Ber1oluzzi turned discussion over to Committee Reports . In regard to the Hampden Hall Art Wall, Bertoluzzi commented that it is nice to have art on the walls . Bertoluzzi asked how long the ar1 will be in Hampden Hall. Bartunek replied that the ar1 will come down for the Department of Parks and Recreation's Art Show from October 13-19 and then hung back up through mid- December. Ber1oluzzi informed the Commission that Englewood Arts has hired Benjamin Tompkins as the new violin instructor for Strings Attached. Bertoluzzi reported that Mr. Tompkins is a professional violinist who came to Colorado a year ago from Charleston, South Carolina. Black gave an update on the June 11th Parks and Recreation Commission meeting. Black informed the Commission that Pirates Cove had a major leak a few weeks ago caused by a construction issue. Black explained that with the help of Public Works staff, the leak was fixed temporarily and the facility was back open within for1y-eight hours with little disruption to the public . Discussion followed in regard to the cause of the leak and the City 's course of action. Moore asked in regard to attendance at Pirates Cove due to inclement weather over the past month. Black reported that attendance in June was down significantly. Black noted that weather has also had a significant impact on revenue at the Broken Tee Englewood Golf Course. VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS Commission members were reminded of upcoming events including Artabout Englewood on Saturday, August l 51 and the Funfest Olde Tyme Fair on Saturday, August 22n ct_ • • • • • • IX . x. DIRECTOR 'S CHOICE There were no items for Director 's Choice. COMMISSION MEMBERS CHOICE Moore discussed an upcoming show in her gallery. Commission member were informed that Bertoluzzi and Moore had been reappointed to the Cultural Arts Commission. Di scussion followed in regard to recent appointments to the Cultural Arts Commission including Karen Kenney as Commission Member, Nathan Barragan as Yo uth Member and Tamara Emmanuel as Alternate Member.
