CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSIO N Minutes of February 4, 2009 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:49pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the Civic Center City Council Conference Room. Present: Absent: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Janet Moore, Vice Chairperson Heather Bartunek, Commission Member (arrived at 5:57pm) Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Jennifer Enger, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Jill Wilson, City Council Liaison Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood Schools Liaison Jerrell Black, ex officio Also Present: Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Natasha Fish, Youth Commission Member Tim Vacca, Museum of Outdoor Arts Carol tvkGuigan, Program Administrator Special Events (left at 6: l 7pm) REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes o r additions to the agenda . APPROVAL OF MINUTES Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of January 7, 2009. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV . I~TROD UCTI O'.\ OF GUESTS Carol 0-IcGuigan , Special Events Program Administrator for the City of Engle\vood. Department of Parks and Recreation. was introduced. V. '.\E\Y BCSI'.\ESS Vl. There were no items for ~ew Bu s iness . OLD Bl'SI~ESS Discu ss ion vvas turned over to Ms. McGuigan to give an update in regard on the Artwork in Hampden Hall program . Commission members we re told that Hampden Hall is closed thi s week for maintenance and painting and that the next art to be hung in Hampden Hall will be for the Juried Art Show . In regard to the Artwork in Hampden Hall program, McGuigan stated that people are showing interest in the program . The Commission discussed dates for the next s howing . McGuigan reported that the City's Art show, which had originally been after the Juried Art Show, would not be until the fall. Commission members concurred to do the next Artwork in Hampden Hall showing from May through August between the Juried Art Show and the City's Art Show . Discussion followed in regard to advertising for the program and reviewing the art for content prior to hanging. Black told the Commission that there is an Art Selection Committee that should review the artwork. McGuigan reported that she would email information to the • Commission after she gets it all together. McGuigan info1med the Commission that Hampden Hall was used 141 days in 2008. Black spoke to the Commission in regard to David Taylor and the City's requirement that they must meet semi-annually with the Cultural Arts Commission to discuss performances for the year. Black reported that the City is still waiting to hear back from David Taylor to schedule a time to attend a Cultural Arts Commission meeting. Debby Severa, Recording Secretary, stated that she would follow-up with David Taylor. Discussion followed . MOA Representative, Tim Vacca, gave an update on Duo . Vacca told the Commission that MOA had an engineeting report completed on Duo which showed that the problem is due to the way it was built. Vacca went on to explain that MOA is planning on having Duo repaired and re-engineered to fix the problem . Vacca announced that MOA's upcoming show will be Object Project. Vacca stated that the Opening Rec eption will be February 21 st at 5:30pm; noting that three local artists are in the show. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS Di scussion turned to Comminee Rep o 11s and an update on the community garden . City Council Liaison Wilson reported that there was a meeting with Park s and Recreation staff and representatives from the Cultural At1s Commission to discuss details pertaining to the community • garden. 'vVil so n informed the Commission that the City will be using the assistance of Denver Urban Garden (DUG) in planning the community garden which will be located at the former Depot property. Discussion followed. Black reported that there is a tentative meeting scheduled on-site with DCG for next week. 'vVilson reported that she understands that there \viii be costs invol ved and th:H it is her hope to find money for the program . B lack told the Commission that at the January Parks and Recreation Commission meeting. the c o mmunity g;:irclen had been discussed with the Bo;:ird ;:ind everyone was very excited. Black reported that staff will be discussing the community garden in more detail at the February Parks and Recreation Commission meeting and encouraged any Cultural Ai1S Commission members to attend the meeting if interested. Black also stated that he will be a s king for a volun te er from the Parks and Recreati on Commission to serve on the Community Garden Committee as a pat1nership betvveen th e nvo C ommiss ions. Di scussio n moved to Pub lic A11. Commission Member Bat1Unek reported that she had emailed !\ancy Fent on with Community Development in regard to the A11 at the Shuttle Stops. B;:it1unek stated that Fenton told her that there are a few spots in need of artwork but that nothing \vill be done until the summer. Commission :V1ember Schnitzer asked in regard to cost to ride the shuttle. Ba11Unek replied that it is free . Bertoluzzi gave an update on Eng lewood Arts. Bertoluzzi announced upcoming concerts on February 14th, Zephyr Ensemble, and March 15 th, Ah. Mozart!, both at 2pm in Hampden Hall. Be11olu zzi told commission members that Englewood Arts is still pursing a Cultural Arts Center • which more information will be available in March. • • • In regard to the National Juried Art Show, Vice Chairperson Moore announced that the show will run from April 2nd through May 23rd, with the Opening Reception on April 4th. Moore reported that the gallery will be open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays . Moore stated that she is looking for volunteers to gallery sit and help in hanging the artwork and taking it down and packing it up. Black gave an update on the January Parks and Recreation Commission meeting . Black informed the Commission that the Department of Parks and Recreation and Community Development are partnering with Englewood Businesses in a recreation reward program which will entail participating businesses offering discounts to customers who show their Recreation Photo ID card. Black told the commission that ACE and BID are very excited with the program. Commission members were told that the Englewood Recreation Center has kicked off its Fitness Challenge program. Black explained that over five hundred participants signed up for the free program. Black went on to explain that participants who work out at least three times a week are eligible for we e kly prize drawings and participants who work out three times a week for ten of the eleven weeks are eligible for a grand prize drawing. Black reported that Malley will be doing a similar program starting the end of March. VIII. UPCO:\-llNG EVENTS IX. x. There were no additional upcoming events for discussion . DIRECTOR'S CHOICE Black congratulated Jennifer Enger on her appointment to Commission Member: adding that he \Vas delighted City Council was able to work in her appointment on short-notice . Commission members were notified that Michael Keene has resigned as commission member. Black stated that the next appointments by City Council will be in June whe n Keene's vacancy and the Alternate Member vacancy will be tilled. B lack acknowledged both Kate Dul aney and tvfary Lynn Baird on sharing the Englew ood School Liaison position . Benoluzzi asked Dulaney and Baird if they had not ified the School Boa rd.
