CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of March 4, 2009 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:48pm by Chairperson Bertoluzz i at the Civic Center City Council Conference Room . Present: Absent: Also Present: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Janet Moore, Vice Chairperson (arrived at 5:50pm) Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Jennifer Enger, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Jill Wilson, City Council Liaison Natasha Fish, Youth Commission Member Jerrell Black, ex officio Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood Schools Liaison Tim Vacca, Museum of Outdoor Arts Carol McGuigan, Program Administrator Special Events (left at 6:34pm) Doug Cohn, Chairperson, Englewood Days (left at 6:03pm) James Wallace , Da vid Taylor Dance Theater (arrived at 5:49pm/ left at 6:08pm) • II. REVIE\V OF AGENDA • Artwall in Hampden Hall was added for discussion under Public Art. III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of February 4, 2009. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS Doug Cohn, Chairperson for Eng lew oo d Days introduced himself to the Commission . Mr. Cohn informed the Commission that planning has started for the 2009 Englewood Days celebration in August. Cohn stated that Englewood Da ys has been approached in regard to having an ai1 event included in with the celebration. Cohn explained that he does not have details as to what the a11 event would involve but wanted to extend the invitation to the Cultural Arts Commission and local a11ists and to see if there was interest. Discussion followed in regard to possibly having artwork displayed in the various stores . Vice Chairperson Moore asked Cohn to verify with the business owners to see who would be interested in having artwork in their stores. Di scussion followed . Commission Member Stewart told Cohn that Artabout Englewood is being planned for August l st_ Cohn stated that Englewood Days is scheduled for August 29th . Stewart noted that the Artabout event is being re-thought due to low attendance at last year's event. City Council Liaison Wilson asked Cohn ifthe Chamber of Commerce is involved in the planning of Englewood Days . Cohn replied yes. Wilson explained that she is the liaison to BID and she could talk to those business owners to see if there is any interest in putting artwork in their stores. Discussion followed in regard to liability to the store owner if a piece of art is damaged. Commission members agreed that it was a good idea to include an art connection with the Englewood Days celebration. Cohn • thanked the Commission and stated that he would follow-up with business owners and get back in touch with more information. Cohn left the meeting . V. NEW BUSINESS Discussion was turned over to James Wallace with David Taylor Dance Theater who, per agreement between the City of Englewood and David Taylor, is required to meet with the Cultural Arts Commission semi-annually to discuss yearly performances for debt reduction . Wallace informed the Commission that David Taylor has four performances scheduled for 2009: two performances for Three 's a Crowd that was on January 2Yd and 24th, one performance of L'Amour that was held on February 16 t\ one performance of Rainforest Odyssey and two performances of Nutcracker in a Nutshell , both with performance dates to be determined . The question was asked in regard to what performances were major and minor and what distinguishes , a major performance to a minor performance. Wallace stated that the two performances for Three 's a Crowd and the one performance of L 'Amour and Rainforest Odyssey are major performances and the Nutcracker in a Nutshell is a minor performance. In regard to what distinguished a major from a minor, Wallace explained that a minor performance will have more narration and will be sho11er, whereas a major performance will have little to no narration and more dancing . Black thanked Wallace for coming to tonight 's meeting to discuss David Taylor's perfo1mances for 2009 . Wallace thanked the Commission and left the meeting . With McGuigan present, discussion pertaining to the Artwall in Hampden Hall was moved ahead of Old Business. McGuigan noted the change of the name of the program to Artwall in Hampden Hall from Art in Hampden Hall. McGuigan reported that the committee has met to discuss guidelines for the program . Commission members receiv ed copies of publications including the Englewood Citizen and Recreation Activity Guides that advertised the call for art for the Artwall in Hampden Hall. McGuigan told the Commission that she has already received several calls. Commission Member Bartunek discus sed details from the committee meeting . Bai1unek explained that there is enough room to hang fifteen pieces, noting that one piece of a11work could consist of several smaller pieces of a11. Discu ssio n followed in regard to the selection of a11work . ln regard to a reception. Black stated that there is not money allocated in the budget for it. Bal1unek discussed dates for the exhibition, stating that the art can be dropped off on Wednesday, May 27 th from l lam - 1 pm , and Thursday, May 28 1h from 5-7pm with the hanging of the a11work on May 29 1h. Ba11unek repo11ed that the al1work would be taken down during the City's art show and re-hung with a final take down date to be dete1mined. Discussion followed in regard to changes in the wording for the guidelines. McGuigan thanked the Commission and left . Di sc ussion turned to Election of Officers . Chairperson Benoluzz i opened the floor for nominations for Chairperson. Commission Member Schnitzer nominated Eric Bertoluzzi. Commission Member Stewart seconded the motion. Bertoluzzi asked if there were any other nominations. There were none. The floor was closed. Bertoluzzi was declared Chairperson of the Cultural Arts Commission. Chairperson Bertoluzzi opened the floor for nomination for Vice Chairperson . • • • • • Chairperson Bertoluzzi nominated Janet Moore. Commission Member Stewart seconded the motion. Bertoluzzi asked if there were any other nominations. There were none. The floor was closed. Moore was declared Vice Chairperson of the Cultural Arts Commission. Commission members congratulated Bertoluzzi and Moore . VI. OLD BUSINESS Discussion began on the community garden. City Council Liaison Wilson reported that a meeting is scheduled with P arks and Recreation staff, a representative from D enver Urban Garden (DUG) and several commission members for next Wednesday when D UG will present plans for the community garden. Stewart spoke in regard to the D epot property being the potential site for the community garden and the amount of space that will allow room for art. Wilson confirmed the potential for the Depot property; noting that money is still needed to move forward wi th the project. VIL COMMITTEE REPORTS VIII. MOA Representative Tim Vacca announced that Artab o ut committee is looking at August 1st for this year's event. Vacca discussed plans for the 2009 D esign and Build that will encompass eight to ten interns creating their own show indoors in the MOA Gallery in addition to the sculpture garden located outside the City Center building . Vacca reported that about four hundred people attended the opening reception of Color of Sound on February 21 51; noting it was a good turnout. In regard to the 2009 Juried Art Show, Moore reported that jurors have selected the artwork for the show which will include 28 to 30 paintings and 7 sculptures. Moore reminded commission members that the show will open on April 2 nd with the reception on April 4th. Moore told the Commission that she is still looking for volunteers to gallery sit. It was dete1mined that Moore would bring a schedule to next month's meeting for commission members to sign up . An update on the February Parks and Recreation Commission meeting followed. Schnitzer repo11ed that staff spoke in regard to the community garden that included discussion in regard to a fence for the garden and the need to notify the sutTounding neighborhood of plans for the garden to address any concerns . Schnitzer told the Commission that golf course staff discussed plans to purchase eighteen new golf carts in addition to implementing a study on the feasibi lity of e lectric golf ca11s . Lastly, Schnitzer reported that the City of Englewood is in discussion with the Englewood Li on's Club in regard to the City taking over the operation of the Lion's Club train in Belleview Park for this summer. Bl ack told the Commission that the Lion's Club is having problems finding staff to operate the train and if they are unable to find staff for this summer, there is a high probability that the train will not operate . B lack stated that Parks and R ecreation staff is working with the City Attorney's Depa11ment and City Manager's Office to submit a proposal to the Lion's Cl ub for operation of the train for this summer. Commission members were told that B roken Tee Golf Cou rse was voted Best Practice Facility by Avid Golfer and nominated b y Golf Digest, a top rated national publication, as the best place to play for wo m en. UPCOMING EVENTS Bertoluzzi announced the upcoming Englewood Arts concert Ah, Mozart in Hampden Hall on March 15th at 2pm . Wilson announced that a Farmer 's Market will be coming to Englewood on Saturday mornings beginning May 2nd in the Acoma/Englewood Parkway lot. Wilson noted that there will be free space available to artists. Wilson told the Commission that BID will be purchasing sixteen more planters in addition to more bike racks. Wilson stated that BID is having some different and larger flowers made for the new planters that will also be added in to the existing planters so that all of the planters will match. Wilson reported that BID will be doing an Adopt a Planter program if the Cultural Arts Commission is interested. Discussion followed in regard to the Rec Rewards program that is being offered through Parks and Recreation and Community Development through a partnership with BID . Wilson explained that the program will give a Recreation ID Card holder a discount at participating businesses in Englewood . Wilson stated that BID is very excited about the program. IX. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE Commission members were informed that Gary Hutlberg's mother has passed away, just a few weeks following the passing of his sister. X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE XI. Wilson spoke in regard to the recent affidavit that was filed with the City to recall four of the seven City Council members . Discussion followed.
