HomeMy WebLinkAbout1999-07-22 CAC MINUTES• I. • II. • CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of July 22, 1999 The Special Meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Wolosyn at the Englewood Recreation Center, Conference Room. Present: Absent: Also Present: Olga Wolosyn, Chairperson Janet Spangenberg, Commission Member Eric Bertoluzzi, Commission Member (arrived at 5:48pm) Rosemary LaPorta, Commission Member (left at 6:57pm) Corrine Lindsey, Commission Member Ray Tomasso, Commission Member Jerrell Black, ex officio Martha Warner, Vice Chairperson Mike Heberling, Youth Commission Member Gary Hultberg , Recreation Manager Alex Habenicht, City Council Liaison Julie Grazulis , City Council Member (arrived at 5:55pm) Joseph Riche, Society for Preservation of Humanity Ben Thompson, Society for Preservation of Humanity SOCIETY FOR PRESERVATION OF HUMANITY Riche presented slides and potential locations for the art that would be placed along Little Dry Creek. Alternative pieces of art were also shown. Drawings and similar art by the artist were shown for those pieces of art not completed. Commission members gave their comments and suggestions. Director Black stated that staff from Parks and Recreation and Public Works will walk along Little Dry Creek tomorrow to determine if the sites are feasible. Director Black informed Commission members that City Council looked at the same information that is being presented tonight. Commission members were told that City Council gave their approval on the agreement with the Society for the Preservation of Humanity. In regards to the Cultural Arts Commission 's request that local artists be included in the show, Riche reported that there are three local artists. Commission member LaPorta asked in regards to the value of each piece of art. Riche replied that the information would be given to the department. Commission members asked Riche and Thompson to leave the room so that discussion could take place regarding tonight 's presentation. Riche and Thompson left. Commission members made their comments concerning the art to be placed along Little Dry Creek. In regards to the drawings presented for the pieces of art not yet completed, Commission members agreed that they did not feel comfortable making a decision without first seeing the actual pieces of art. Discussion followed . Council member Habenicht spoke in regards to the local artists selected for the show. Habenicht stated that it was the Commission 's understanding that there would be a Call for Entries. Discussion continued regarding approval of the artwork for Little Dry Creek. Recreation Manager Hultberg stated that the Commission has a signed agreement with the Society for the Preservation of Humanity , and that the Cultural Arts Commission has the final approval. The question was asked regarding a timeline . Director Black stated that the onl y deadline is that the art needs to be installed within ninety days. Commission member LaPorta suggested that the Commission table the decision until the time when the Commission is satisfied. After considerable discussion , Commission members came to the agreement that tonight's presentation by the Society of Preservation for Humanity was incomplete. The suggestion was made to have Joseph Riche attend the August 4 , 1999 , Cultural Arts Commission meeting to re-present all ten pieces of art to be placed along Little Dry Creek. Director Black stated that he , along with Recreation Manager Hultberg and Chairperson Wolosyn, would meet with Joseph Riche. II. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 7:16pm. Deborah A.
