CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of April 7, 1999 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:48pm by Chairperson Wolosyn at the Englewood Recreation Center, Conference Room. Present: Absent: Also Present: Olga Wolosyn, Chairperson Martha Warner, Vice Chairperson Rosemary LaPorta, Commission Member (arrived at 5:54pm) Janet Spangenberg, Commission Member Ray Tomasso, Commission Member Jerrell Black, ex officio Corrine Lindsey, Commission Member Alex Habenicht, City Council Liaison Julie Grazulis, City Council Member (arrived at 5:51pm) Bervette Williams, Public Library Liaison Mike Heberling, Youth Commission Member APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairperson Wolosyn asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes of March 3, 1999. Chairperson Wolosyn had a change under Old Business regarding her discussion on EFOT. Wolosyn reported that she had talked to a representative from EFOT but had not attended the meeting. A correction was also made to the discussion concerning the Gothic Theater. The minutes would be changed to read "discussion concluded that the remodeling process is progressing .... ". A motion was made to accept the minutes as amended. The motion passed unanimously. OLD BUSINESS Chairperson Wolosyn turned discussion over to Vice Chairperson Warner. Warner discussed a working calendar for the Commission. Commission members were asked to bring back dates and events to the next meeting. Director Black spoke in regards to a recent meeting with Bob Simpson, City staff and the Museum of Outdoor Arts. Discussion entailed MOA sharing space with David Taylor Dance Theater. Black reported that discussion is continuing. Commission members will be kept apprised of developments. Discussion followed regarding the David Taylor proposal. Warner began discussion on murals for the South Broadway corridor. Council Member Grazulis passed around photographs of murals. Commission members discussed locations for the murals. The sub-committee would determine locations /needs and forward the information on to Art • Scibelli with Neighborhood and Business Development. Director Black discussed murals at Rotolo Park. Black explained that the murals were painted by a High School youth. Dave Lee, Manager of Open Space, coordinated the project. Black noted that Lee is currently working with the two youth members from the Parks and Recreation Commission in coordinating the possibility of some murals along the Little Dry Creek. • Commission Member Tomasso announced that he will be making a presentation to the Englewood Library Board Tuesday night for the Book Arts League. In regards to the Creative Expressions video that was viewed at the March meeting, Wolosyn reported that she has been unsuccessful in reaching the representative from the organization. A letter was sent to let them know that at this time, the Commission is not able to make a decision regarding users of the cultural space. Wolosyn gave to Director Black a copy of the Cultural Arts Commission 's Annual Report. The report would be forwarded on to City Council. Commission members will receive a copy of the report in the May packet. Commission members were updated on progress with Cinderella City. Black reported that the buildings have been demolished . City Council is now concentrating on tenant agreements. IV. NEW BUSINESS Commission Member LaPorta informed Commission members that a few of the Commission members, along with other individuals, are meeting every other Wednesday , 8:30am, at the Breakfast Queen on Broadway . The emphasis of the meetings is a Cultural Council. Director Black gave an update on the Plaza area for the new CityCenter development. A meeting was held with representatives from various cultural users to discuss needs and uses for the Plaza area. Feedback from the meeting will be taken back to David Tryba. Vice Chairperson Warner asked in regards to the plans for an Ice Rink. Black explained that it looks as if the rink will not be located at the Town Center for the initial development. City Council has asked staff to proceed in looking for a temporary location. V . COMMITTEE REPORTS Discussion moved on to Public Art. Black reported that the City Attorney is reviewing the Joseph Riche agreement. Commission members will be touring Englewood parks on Monday, April 12 , 1999, to determine locations for public art . In regards to Art at the Station, Wolosyn addressed two articles from the Rocky Mountain News • and Englewood Herald. The articles interviewed Ray Tomasso regarding his artwork at the • station. Black stated that the City Attorney is working on a contract. • • • Commission member LaPorta spoke in regards to the Indian statue "Corne Back My Brother" that stood along South Broadway in previous years. Council Liaison Habenicht stated that she has spoken to Jerry Slack, President of the Englewood Historical Society, regarding the statue . Discussion followed regarding bringing the statue back to Englewood. Commission Members spoke in regards to Commission member Lindsey's suggestion of a "Veil of Tears" along the Little Dry Creek. Discussion moved on to the Feasibility Study. Copies of surveys received were distributed among Commission members. A database for the surveys was discussed. As discussed at the March meeting, Commission member Tomasso presented a survey that he created to help determine the wants and needs for the citizens of Englewood. Discussion followed regarding a means to distribute the surveys to the citizens. Director Black would coordinate efforts with Denise White of the Department of Parks and Recreation and Pauletta Puncerelli of City Manager's Office. Council Liaison Habenicht announced that plans for a cultural corridor are moving along. Habenicht discussed coordination of the celebration. Commission Member Spangenberg discussed location for the Centennial Celebration. V. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE AND COMMISSION MEMBER'S CHOICE Chairperson Wolosyn announced that she had attended the Littleton Arts Council. Commission Member Spangenberg discussed volunteer opportunities for the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. Commission Member Tomasso announced an upcoming presentation, "100 Best Small Art Towns" on Friday , May 21 , 1999, in Loveland. Vice-Chairperson Warner asked about the Olde Tyrne Fair. Director Black stated that the Fair will be August 27-28, 1999 , at the Miller Field. Discussion followed. Commission members were reminded to bring dates for the calendar. VI.
