I. CALL TO ORDER
City of Englewood
CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of May 3, 2000
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order
at 5 :48pm by Vice Chairperson LaPorta at the Englewood Public Library, Perrin Room.

11. REVIEW OF AGENDA
There were no changes or additions to the agenda.
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Vice Chairperson LaPorta asked if there were any additions or corrections to the
minutes of April 5, 2000. There were none. A motion was made to accept the minutes as
presented. The motion passed unanimously.
ill. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS

Mr. Gnaegy and Mr. Hemsi with TaCito Design were introduced .
NEW BUSINESS
Discussion was turned over to Mr. Gnaegy and M1. Hemsi. Mr. Gnaegy told Commission members
that Art Scibelli with Community Development had approached the TaCito Design company in
regards to calling attention to Englewood boundaries/entries. Mr. Gnaegy explained that after
research, four locations were identified as entry ports into Englewood, including two on Hampden and
two on Broadway .
Three design concepts were presented to Commission members for consideration. Discussion
followed regarding materials, size , etc. for each design. After considerable discussion and viewing of
the three design concepts, the Cultural Arts Commission came to the consensus that the art/sculpture
design was their choice for entry port signage . •
The question was asked in regards to price range. Mr. Gnaegy commented that all three designs were
within the same range .
Mr. Gnaegy and Mr. Hemsi thanked the Commission.
Discussion turned over to Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager. Flyers for the OldeTyme Fair/Funfest
were distributed. Hultberg explained that the Olde Tyme Fair would be in collaboration with "A
Celebration of Englewood, New and Old ". Events for the Olde Tyme Fair were discussed.
Recreation Manager Hultberg also discussed the Sounds of Summer concert series . Youth
Commission member Heberling asked if the concerts would eventually be moved to the Plaza.
Hultberg responded that that is the Department's intent.
V. OLD BUSINESS
Commission members were updated in regards to David Taylor. Council Member Grazulis reported
that there have been no decisions but that the cost of finishing the space at Baily 's is not doable.
Grazulis noted that other means are being sought.
Discussion moved to the cultural space at the Civic Center building. Revised floor plans of the
cultural space were distributed. Director Black discussed usable vs . non-usable space . Discussion •
followed regarding the storage space. Recreation Manager Hultberg spoke in regards to capacity,
saying that with the revisions , 150 people could now sit comfortably. Hultberg went on to explain the
performance restrictions for the space, including that it was more conducive for art shows than
performances. Hultberg noted that there are noise restrictions , similar to the reasons for David Taylor
not being able to use the space.
Hultberg reported that he had met with a representative from the Colorado Symphony for input in
regards to staging, lighting, etc. for the space.
Discussion ensued regarding the floor plan .
Director Black asked Commission members for a direction on how to move forward with the cultural
space . Black told Commission members that the earliest the space would be opened would be July or
August of 2000. Discussion followed.
A motion was made by Commission member Warner and seconded by Commission
member Moore to accept the revised changes to the cultural space at the Civic Center
building. Commission member Tomasso suggested that the doors be lined up.
Recreation Manger Hultberg replied that the doors already exist but that it would be
looked into. The motion passed unanimously.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Commission members were updated on the Art Wall at Wal-Mart. Commission member Warner
reported that 38 entries were received. On Saturday , the Committee viewed the entries and narrowed
the selection down to four. Presentations and interviews will be given mid-June. Warner added that
of the four finalists, no one is from Englewood.
Council member Wolosyn gave an update on the Exploratory Committee . Wolosyn reported that the
committee is continuing to work on numbers for the Cultural/Performing Arts Center. Wolosyn told
Commission members that a preliminary review by Mr. Copenhaver was presented to Director Black
today. The Committee is currently completing the Education portion of the programming. Wolsoyn
added that in June the Committee would be looking into prospective fundraisers.
Commission member Warner gave a brief report on undertakings with the Parks and Recreation
Commission. Warner distributed a concept plan for the Colorado Rockies Youth Field/Centennial
Park Expansion. Commemorative bench and tree planting brochures were also distributed.
Warner passed around a draft letter to Ms. Young, Flood Middle School Art teacher, regarding the
Little Dry Creek Sculpture Garden . The letter would be sent to Ms. Young along with an invitation to
the Artist Reception for her and her students.
DIRECTOR'S AND COMMISSION MEMBER'S CHOICE
Director Black commented that School Liaison Baird was unable to attend tonight's meeting due to
preparation for her art show. Black also noted that Commission member Lindsey called to say she
would be unable to attend .
Commission members were updated on CityCenter. Black announced that Trammel Crow, residential
developer, would be closing on Monday. Black reminded Commission members of the CityCenter
tour scheduled for Friday , May 5th.
Black distributed a draft letter to the Museum of Outdoor Arts in regards to a resident discount
program. Black reviewed the letter with Commission members. Resident discounts include: 5 six
week after-school art classes exclusively to Englewood residents free of charge, scholarships for City
of Englewood residents starting at 75% of the non-member fees for art classes , and ten percent off of
non-member art class prices. Black asked Commission members if there were other items or issues
from the Cultural Arts Commission. Commission member Warner asked in regards to statistics being
provided by MOA once a year. Director Black responded that the agreement between the City of
Englewood and MOA states that MOA would already provide that information, but that it would still
be added in the letter.
In regards to last month's discussion pertaining to discounts to City employees and businesses, Black
explained that monthly drawings would be held. Recreation Manager Hultberg responded that the
contract is specifically for Englewood residents but if the Commission wants more it can be
negotiated.
A motion was made by Commission member Moore and seconded by Commission
member Warner to accept the Museum of Outdoor Arts resident program, with the
addition that the Museum of Outdoor Arts would provide an annual accounting of
participation. Recreation Manager Hultberg noted MOA would need to re-approve the
agreement with the addition. The motion passed unanimously.
Director Black noted that the agreement would need to be taken to City Council with the
recommendation from the Cultural Arts Commission.
Vice-Chairperson LaPorta announced that she would be having a show at the LaPorta Art Gallery
Friday evening.
Recreation Manager Hultberg announced that the Malley Senior Recreation Center would be having
their Annual Juried Art Show on Saturday.
In regards to the Artist Reception at Little Dry Creek for Saturday, May 13th, Hultberg told
Commission members that the invitations were sent out today. Hultberg also noted that flyers were
placed at all City facilities and given to all Englewood art teachers to hand out to students.
Commission member Moore distributed information she had gathered from her visit to California in
regards to public art and an art center in Wray, California.
