CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of June 7, 2000 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:56pm by Vice Chairperson LaPorta at Englewood City Hall, Conference Room A. Present: Absent: Also Present: Rosemary LaPorta, Vice Chairperson John Gates, Commission Member (arrived at 6: l4pm) Corrine Lindsey, Commission Member Janet Moore, Commission Member Ray Tomasso, Commission Member Martha Warner, Commission Member Olga Wolosyn, City Council Liaison Jerrell Black, ex officio Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Julie Grazulis, City Council Member Hank Long, Englewood Public Library Director Virginia Steele, President, Denver City Restorations (arrived at 6:02pm) REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes to the agenda. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Vice Chairperson LaPorta asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes of May 3, 2000. In regards to the Art Wall at Wal-Mart, Commission Member Warner stated that she did not say that there were no finalists from Englewood. The sentence would be changed to say "Warner added that there were four finalists". A motion was made to accept the minutes as amended. The motion passed unanimously. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS Hank Long, Director of the Englewood Public Library, was introduced. V. NEW BUSINESS Due to Virginia Steele not being present, discussion would be postponed until her arrival. Discussion moved on to "Prometheus". Hank Long reported that he had contacted Director Black in regards to the transfer of ownership of and responsibility to find a new location for "Prometheus", the statue located outside of the Englewood Public Library entrance. Long explained that he had thought of the Cultural Arts Commission due to it being about the same time the Commission was doing a survey of artwork in the City of Englewood facilities . Long went on to say that he has contacted Public Works in regards to moving the statue as soon as possible due to the Englewood Parkway, the road being developed in the near future that will run in front of the Library. Commission members were told that the statue will be removed and put into • storage until a new location has been determined. Discussion followed regarding possible locations for the statue. Director Black informed the Commission that it was not essential that a decision be made tonight due to the statue being in a secure location. Due to the arrival of Virginia Steele, discussion was turned back to Hank Long. Virginia Steele, President of Denver City Restorations was introduced. Long explained that he and Ms. Steele have been working with the Englewood Historical Society in developing a strategic plan. Hank added that part of that process includes meeting with the Boards and Commissions to gather input. Ms. Steele spoke in regards to her role with the Englewood Historical Society and the role of the Englewood Historical Society. Commission members were asked for their comments. Discussion followed regarding the Cultural Arts Commission and the Englewood Historical Society working in a cooperative manner, and projects of the Englewood Historical Society including the Skerritt House. In regards to the Skerritt House, Director Black suggested a tour for the Commission. Ms. Steele and Hank Long thanked the Commission for their time and input. VI. OLD BUSINESS Council Member Grazulis reported that discussion with David Taylor Dance Theater is moving in a positive direction. Grazulis explained that discussion includes the City now purchasing and finishing • the space, with a smaller stipend to David Taylor. Vice Chairperson LaPorta stated that she is still working on the transfer of the 501 c3 status from EFOT. LaPorta announced that there would be a meeting on July 5 with the City Attorney and others to further discuss the process. In regards to the MOA resident discount program, Director Black told Commission members that Chairperson Bertoluzzi and he had given an update to City Council and that City Council accepted the Cultural Arts Commission's recommendation. Black announced that the program has been put in place. Discussion moved to the Sculpture Garden reception held on Saturday, May 13 1h. City Council Liaison Wolosyn informed Commission members that on Friday, the Society for the Preservation of Humanity (SPH) did presentations to Flood Middle School and Sinclair Middle School. Wolosyn then spoke of the reception on Saturday . Director Black recognized Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager, for his time and efforts that were put into the reception. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS Commission members were updated on the Art Wall at Wal-Mart. City Council Liaison Wolosyn reported that on Tuesday, June 13th, the four finalists will be making their presentations to the Art Wall Committee. Commission Member Gates asked who would select the winner. Wolosyn answered the Committee. Discussion began on replacement of the pedestal sculpture at the Plaza. Director Black told Commission members that he felt the MOA "Child of Peace" piece would at the Plaza for a while. • • • • Black spoke in regards to the placement of the MOA sculptures and the delayed schedule for some due to on-going construction at CityCenter . Vice Chairperson LaPorta commented on the Indian Statue "Come Back My Brother", by John Scott that was once placed along South Broadway. Commission members were told that one of Mr. Scott's statues has been bought by Bergen Park. LaPorta suggested that the Commission make a point to visit Mr. Scott and view the piece and consider the Indian statue for the pedestal at the Plaza. City Council Liaison Wolosyn spoke in regards to the procedure and selection process for the replacement. Director Black suggested that in one or two months, the Commission put only a couple of items on the agenda for discussion with one of them being the pedestal sculpture replacement. In regards to visiting Mr. Scott, Vice Chairperson LaPorta was told to notify Commission members of a couple of possible dates. City Council Liaison Wolosyn gave an update on the Exploratory Committee. Wolosyn reported that the Committee is currently working on details of the business plan. Wolosyn announced that a "Parents Forum" will be held on June 27th at the Civic Center. Commission members were told that a "presentation script" is being developed to be used when giving presentation on the Cultural/Performing Arts Center. Wolosyn noted that Commission Member Tomasso is working on a pamphlet for "Friends of the Center", a support organization for the Center. Commission Member Warner gave an update on the May Parks and Recreation Commission meeting. VIll. DIRECTOR'S AND COMMISSION MEMBER'S CHOICE City Council Member Grazulis commented on the famous cow sculptures in Chicago and the trend for artwork benefiting charities. Recreation Manager Hultberg distributed the 2000 Sounds of Summer Concert Series schedule. Director Black discussed the July Commission meeting and asked if there would be a conflict for any Commission members due to its being on July 5, the day after a holiday. Commission members agreed that there was no reason to change the date. Black informed Commission members that the Department has ordered an arts grant resource called "Arts and Culture Funding Report". Vice Chairperson LaPorta distributed information in regards to an opening for Siempre Viva Art, a new art gallery in Englewood. IX. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 7:12pm . Deborah A.
