CALL TO ORDER

CULTURAL ARTS COl\!IMISSION
Minutes of July 2, 2008
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to
order at 5:46pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at Broken Tee Englewood , 2101 W. Oxford Avenue .

REVIEW OF AGENDA
There were no changes to the agenda .
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of June 4,
2008. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented.
IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS
Bob Laughlin, owner of Acoustic Music Revival and member of Englewood Business
Impro ve ment District was introduced .
V. NEW BUSINESS
Bertoluzzi info1med commission members that a1nngements had not been made to have the Milk
Can at tonight's meeting for the Commission to view and discuss as consideration for the
Commission's pe1manent a11 collection . Bertoluzzi asked staff if they could make the
arrangements for the artwork to be at the August 61h meeting for the Commission to view .
Commission Member Bai1unek gave an update on Art on Broadway . Bai1unek reported that BID
has been discussing lots of possibilities for the Art on Broadway from sculptures to flower pots .
·Bartunek distributed photos of artwork as samples of art that BID is considering in addition to
photos of flower pots and bike racks that BID has agreed to purchase . Discussion followed in
regard to the flower pots including maintenance in addition to artwork and banners that can be
placed in the pots . Mr. Laughlin told the Commission that BID has already decided that if there is
going to be flowers , someone will be hired to maintain them. City Council Liaison Jill Wilson
commented in regard to how hard BID has been working to impro ve the downtown Broadway
district and how it is a very positi ve thing for the City.
Ted Vasilas, owner of Ted's Clothier and President of BID , arrived at 5:59pm .
Mr. Vasilas discussed the current decorative lighting in the downtown Broadway area and the
possibility of the light poles being changed out due to the City no longer having access to the
replacement bulbs . Vasilas told the Conunission that BID is looking at new light poles that a small
banner (18" x 2') can be hung on . Vasilas asked the Commission to pro vide ideas on artwork for
the banners .
Discussion moved on to postcards for the National Democratic Convention that could be
distributed to convention attendees to encourage them to come to Englewood. Bartunek told the
Commission that the only thing Community Development has is a tri-fold that discusses the a11 at
the shuttle stops. Ba11Unek asked that if it was decided to do a postcard , who would pay for it.
Moore discussed the cost of printing postcards for her gallery. Mr. Vasi las noted that if
something is put on the postcard in regard to BID , it could share in the cost. Discussion followed .
Commission members agreed that there is too short of a timeline to do postcards for the
Democratic National Convention. Wilson discussed having the infotmation available in the
antique district where there is a large number of people who walk and take the bu s. Moore
commented that based on what the Commission is di sc ussing as to the purpose of the postcard ; it
is more of a City/Community Development project and not a Cultural Arts Commission project.

Commission members concurred with Moore . Wilson stated that she would bring it up to City •
Council and present it as a way to promote the City and its different facets . Mr. Laughlin
brought up the suggestion of putting a poster at the RTD kiosks. Wilson stated that she is not sure
of RTD 's policy in posting infotmation at their kiosks but that she would check into it.
VI. OLD BUSINESS
Commission members were reminded of the Commission's meeting with City Council scheduled
for Monday, July l41h at 6pm . Be11oluzzi encouraged everyone to attend the meeting.
Recreation Manager Hultberg infotmed the Commission that the new signage has been installed
for the Red Wedges and Cone Flowers that identifies that the artwork has been purchased by the
City of Englewood and Cultural Arts Commissio n through the one percent public art fund.
VIL COMMITTEE REPORTS
Discussion moved on to Public At1. Be11olu zzi reported that Duo is not up yet.
Hultberg repo1ted that Commission Member Stewart and representatives from the City Manager's
Office and EEF have met to discuss the displaying of art in Hampden Hall. Hultberg stated that
discussion continues and more information will be available at th e August meeting . Hultberg told
the Commission that it has been dete1mined that those eligible to display artwork will be open to
the City of Englewood community and that the City Manager 's Office will manage the program.
Discussion followed.
Bertoluzzi gave an update on Englewood Arts. Bertoluzzi informed the Commission that
Englewood Arts and Glenarm Partners met with Englewood City Council on June 23 rd to give a •

background and evolution of the Englewood Cultural Arts Center project. Bertoluzzi commented
that Englewood Arts was very pleased with the meeting and feels that it was treated with respect
by City Council. Bertoluzzi reported that Englewood Arts is now moving on to the next steps
• necessary for the project.

Commission Member Schnitzer info1med the Commission that the June Parks and Recreation
Commission meeting comprised mainly of discussion related to Broken Tee Englewood.
Schnitzer reported that landscaping has been done around the Broken Tee sculpture that includes a
plaque with info1mation on the sculpture and ai1ist. Schnitzer spoke in regard to the Jr. Golf BBQ
that was held on June 25 1h . Schnitzer commented that it was well-attended and included many
items that had been donated . Schnitzer told the Commission that the Department of Parks and
Recreation was recently awarded with several aquatics awards including# I Aquatics Program in
the nation based on population .
VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS
Discussion followed in regard to events and locations for Artabout Englewood scheduled for
Saturday, September 27, 2008 .
IX. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE

COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE
Mr. Vasilas spoke in regard to BID 's Art on Broadway project and wanting to do something nice
for the entire City to help make it beautiful. Bartunek asked Mr. Vasilas if there is still going to
be a theme for the project. Mr. Vasilas stated yes and asked the Commission to think about
themes to bring to the next BID meeting.
Moore in v ited commission members to the Santa Fe A11 District Collector's Night on the 3'd
Friday of each month .
Wilson thanked Mr. Vasilas and Mr. Laughlin for coming to the Cultural A11s Commission
meeting ; noting that it is always encouraging when there is positive cohesiveness among groups.
Bertoluzzi spoke in regard to what a wonderful City Council liaison Wilson has been for the
Cultural At1s Commission.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:55pm .
