CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of August 6, 2008 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5 :45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the Civic Center City Council Conference Room. Present: Absent: Eric Be11oluzzi, Chairperson Janet Moore, Vice Chairperson Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Jill Wilson, City Council Liaison Natasha Fish, Youth Commission Member Jennifer Enger, Alternate Member (arrived at 5:49pm) Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Michael Keene , Commission Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Also Present: Mary Lynn Baird , Englewood Schools Liaison Gary Hultberg, Rec reation Manager Carol McGuigan, Recreation Program Administrator (left at 6: l Spm) REVIEW OF AGENDA Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or additions to the agenda . Commission Member Schnitzer asked that discussion on Funfest be added to Upcoming Events . APPROVAL OF MINUTES Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of July 10, 2008. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. lV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS Carol McGuigan , R ecreation Program Administrator, was introduced . V. NEW BUSINESS McGuigan thanked the Commission and explained that in mid-May, the Department of Parks and Recreation held its Annual Englewood Art Exhibit featuring art from local artists . McGuigan presented to the Commission Wait ti! the Covvs Com e H ome by Susan Smith that had been awarded the Be st in Show at the Art Exhibit. Commission members viewed the artwork and discussed w hether to purcha se it as part of the Commission's permanent a11 collection. Vice Chairperson Moore asked McGuigan if there was any commission involved in the sale of the artwork . McGuigan explained that there is not ; noting that the intent of the Art Exhibit is to display a11work . Following further discussion, A motion was made by Vice Chairperson Moore and seconded by Commission Member Bartu nek recommending that the Cultural Arts C ommission purchase Wait ti/ the Cows Come Home as part of its permanent art collection . Ayes: Nayes: Bertoluzzi, Moore, Bartunek, Schnitzer, Wilson, Fish None Motion carried. VI. OLD BUSINESS Discussion turned to Old Business and Artwork in Hampden Hall. Recreation Manager Gary Hultberg info1med the Commission that the committee has developed guidelines for Art in Hampden Hall. Hultberg distributed to commission members the "Art Exhibit Processes" and "Artist Agreement" guidelines. Commission members were told that Carol McGuigan will be the project coordinator for the program. Hultberg explained that the program will be open to the Cultural Arts Commission members and Englewood residents and a Selection Committee will be responsible for selecting the artwork to be displayed . Hultberg went on to explain that the artwork will be hung for a period of six months and at1work will not be posted for sale. Di sc ussion followed in regard to the Call for Entries . Bertoluzz i stated that he lo ved the idea and stated that the program will help to bring attention to Hampden Hall and art. Bertoluzzi asked if children's artwork could also be hung. Hultberg replied yes , noting that the guidelines do not have any stipulations in reg ard to age of the artist. Bertoluzzi began discussion on the Cultural Al1S Commission presentation to City Council on Monday, July l41h. Commission Member Bartunek was acknowledged for the excellent job she did in presenting the information to City Council. Moore asked if there was any reaction from City Council. City Council Liaison Jill Wilson noted that she is always telling City Council how much the Cultural Arts Commission is giving back to the community. Bat1unek gave an update on Art on Broadway. Bartunek reported that Commission Member Schnitzer, Wilson and she had attended a BID meeting the end of July where they had spoken about banners . Ba11unek stated that Ted Vasilas ha s asked the Cultural Arts commission to come up with a design for the banner. Moore asked if a theme has been chosen. Bartunek said not yet. Discussion followed regarding the banners, size, etc. Be11oluzzi verified that the Commission will be participating in the proj ec t. Bartunek replied yes . Discussion followed. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS Discussion turned to Committee Reports. There was no upd ate for Public Art . Bertoluzzi informed the Commission that Engle wood Arts has it s concerts planned for the 2008- 2009 Concert Series . Di scussion followed regarding the concerts including the first Olga Wolosyn Memorial Conce11 in November. Youth Commission Member Natasha Fish asked who produces the pla ys in the Series. Bertoluzzi explained that the plays are produced by MSI and Jerry Schell and that they are open auditions . Fish asked if there was an age group . Moore noted that it would be based off of the cast. Bertoluzzi gave an update on Englewood At1s that included Englewood Arts asking City Council • • to pass a resolution resuming the land bank for a Cultural Arts Center to $1,000,000. Be11oluzzi • explained that the resolution will indicate that the political leaders in the City are in support of the project which will also help in fundraising for the Center. Wilson told Bertoluzzi that City Council will be discussing the issue at the budget workshop . • • • VIII. Schnitzer ga ve an update on the July Parks and Recreation Commission meeting . Schnitzer reported that the July meeting was held at the new Bellev ie w# 1 shelter. Hultberg explained that the shelter was part of a renovation project that included two new pavilions and new ADA accessible pla ygro und s and restroom facility. Schnitzer spoke in regard to the Broken Tee Englewood Grand Opening and how nic e of an event it was. UPCOMING EVENTS Commissio n m em bers were reminded of the Board, Commission and Authority Appreciation Night at Pirates Cove on Monday, August 11 th. Discussion followed in regard to Artabout En glewood . Moore noted that last Frida y was the deadline for a1iists to submit their information if they are participating . Schnitze r spoke in reg a rd to the art project for the Commission 's booth at Funfest on Saturday, August 23rd . IX. DIRECTOR 'S CHOICE x. XI. Hultberg spoke in re ga rd to the successful producti on of Fiddler on the Roof, Englewood Parks and Recreati o n 's Summer Drama program . Hultbe rg noted that thi s yea r 's performance was Director Bill Ambron's too th show. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Bertoluzz i d is tributed informati o n on the Museum of Outdoor Art 's upcoming multi-media performance , A Collection of Keepers, on August 9th at 8 :00pm .
