CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of October 1, 2008 Following judging of artwork for the 2009 Student Art Calendar, the regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 6: lOpm by Director Black at the Civic Center City Council Conference Room . Present: Absent: Also Present: Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Jill Wilson, City Council Liaison Jennifer Enger, Alternate Member JetTell Black, ex officio Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Janet Moore, Vice Chairperson Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Michael Keene, Commission Member Natasha Fish, Youth Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood Schools Liaison Tim Vacca , Museum of Outdoor Arts LeighAnn Hoffhines, Communications Coordinator, City of Englewood • II. REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes or additions to the agenda . • III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Black asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of September 3 , 2008. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS There were no guests present . V. NEW BUSINESS Black acknowledged LeighAnn Hoffhines , Communications Coordinator for the City of Englewood, for all of her time and effort that she puts into the Student Art Calendars . VI. OLD BUSINESS In regard to Art on Broadway, Commission Member Schnitzer and City Council Liaison Wilson reported that things are moving forward; stating that BID has approved artwork by Sean Dohe11y that will be placed in flower pots . Wilson noted that flower pots and bike racks have been ordered . Discussion turned to At1work in Hampden Hall. Commission Member Stewart reported that work by Cultural At1s Commission members and members of the Malley Senior Recreation Center has been hung. Schnitzer noted that the artwork still needs identification labels . Black stated that he would follow-up with Carol McGuigan . Commission members discussed A.rtabout Englewood that was held on September 27th and 28 th. • Stewart reported that the Friday evening event was very successful and the tours at the homes, school and Malley were great. Commission members discussed holding the event on another date for next year; attributing school activities and the Bronco game for the low turnout. Commission Member Delaney spoke in regard to the inclusion of Englewood Schools with the event and how much it was appreciated but noted that the school had an "empty" feeling being opened on a w eekend and no one in the school. MOA Representative , Tim Vacca , explained that in the past, the Museum of Outdoor Arts had done a summer performance in conjunction with A.rtabout Englewood as part of its summer internship program. Vacca went on to explain that with Artabout Englewood moving into the fall, MOA is now considering the idea of doing a perfo1mance in conjunction with the last Sounds of Summer Conce11 where Artabout Englewood promotional material could be distributed . Discussion followed. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS There was no update for Public At1 or Englewood Arts. Schnitzer ga ve an update on the September Parks and Recreation Commission meeting. Schnitzer reported that Ouray Sportswear and Red Bird Farms have been awarded the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association Community Service A w ard for their for active pai1icipation in the Englewood community and their donation of merchandise and food towards parks and recreation programs . Schnitzer stated the award was presented at a City Council meeting but due to Ouray Spo11swear being unable to attend the Council meeting , the award was presented to Ouray at the • Commission meeting . Schnitzer also repo11ed that the 2009 proposed golf fees were presented to the Commission of which the Commission gave its recommendation to City Council for its approval. VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS Commission members were reminded of the Top 50 Artists' Reception that will be Thursday , October 23rd from 5:30-6:30pm in the 2nct Floor Atrium . IX. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE Black info1med the Commission that City Council has approved funding for the purchase of new globes for the decorative lighting on the Broadway . Black also reported that BID and the City of Englewood are working together in regard to holiday lighting on the Broadway; adding that there will be a significant difference in this year's holiday lighting compared to previous years . Wilson and Black spoke in regard to BID 's commitment to the downtown Englewood businesses . X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Commission members discussed upcoming a11 shows . Vacca discussed MOA's plans for its Design and Build internship program in 2009 that will include working with a professional a11ist in residence on the implementation of a turf labyrinth at Hudson • Gardens. Vacca announced that Duo has been reinstalled and noted that the plaque is finished and will soon be installed. Vacca reported that MOA will be closed for a good part of October in order to prepare for Lonnie Hanzon's exhibit, Magic Lantern . • XI. • • Hoffhines returned with results from the judging. Discussion followed . Black acknowledged Hoffhines again for all of her time and effort she puts into the Student Art Calendars; noting that the final product is always fabulous .
